Tips on Starting a Small Buisness!

Taled to Bloom Outerwear on facebook and this is what they said.

so much respect for this help bloom, really helpful!

Hey man,

I would suggest checking out http://www.t-shirtforums.com/

That should be a good starting point for you. I would recommend starting out small and locally at your high school. Call up your local screen printers to get some price quotes on getting some shirts made. As I said, start out small and see if there's interest. You don't want to invest a bunch of money into an idea and then have it bomb on you.

If you're interested in getting custom cut and sew stuff done as in t-shirts, hoodies, flannels, etc start looking online via google. There are millions of manufacturing companies out there on the web. I've had so many companies email me hoping to work with us. I think most of the manufacturers you're going to find aren't going to be in the US. Business has really shifted to other countries in terms of getting things made since its a lot cheaper in both material and labor. If you're doing custom cut and sew you pretty much have to design the whole piece yourself so the pattern designer knows what to do next. Its like architecture, you have to show where all the seams are, how long they are, where you want the zippers, what kind of material you want it made out of, etc. A packet full of info regarding the design of your product is called a tech packet. Its what you hand over to a manufacturer to get a prototype made.

I like Sans purely because they are so close to where I live. I can go sit down face to face with them and explain what we want in terms of a product. However, they are really pricey so if you're just starting out, I would recomend going else where because there are definitely companies out there who will make just as nice of stuff for way less the price. I use says because they're so convenient for me especially since I don't have time with college on the side.

Business is quite the venture. My advice is only do it if you're serious because if you want your company to be successful, its pretty much your job 24/7. Ask yourself, what are my priorities? Do I really want to start a company? Where am I trying to go? As long as you actually really care about it, and are in business for the right reasons then I would suggest you get started so you can start gaining some experience. If this is just a half-baked idea to get you more popular amongst friends or whatever, then I would suggest you hold off because that's generally the wrong approach. I see a lot of kids trying to start business not for the sake of actual business but for egotistical reasons.

Not trying to persuade you in either direction, but make sure your priorities are in the right place because if they're not its not worth your time. Business takes all your time and energy especially when just starting out. It can be really frustrating at times and costly to your own wallet.

Hope this info helps you out! If you're in CO at any point, I'd be happy to talk to you more. Or I'm happy to continue a conversation on here. Its fun sharing knowledge!

Small business sounds a good way to go. Tees and hoodies can be profitable.

Influenced Wear Co. is, in my opinion, a very bad choice of name, for obvious reasons, but the name is most likely one of the less important things right now.

make them yourself. it takes some time to get it down but will save you money in the long run. if you do it right one shirt will cost 2-3 dollars.

Definitely take into account why you are starting the company. Like they said, it is more of a commitment to do it right than most people anticipate

For something different to make my company stand out I was think for every purchase made $2 will goto a savings to make a custom Peice of clothing that can be raffled off on Facebook by sharing the image of the custom Peice of clothing. Thoughts on this idea?

thoughts on my logo i have been working on?

Wow, actually a lot of really good advice in here. Really liked that Dave McClure vid. I have no real advice, but am more to take it in as well, logo wise, get something that stands out. You look at Saga, they have a fucking burger which is awesome and fun. Maybe Angus is more of a mascot, but you get the point

So true saga is plain and simple but yet amazing , they actually inspired me a lot. What did you think I my logo idea?

your first mistake

you spelled APPAREL wrong!

i don't think this is such a good idea for you.. im sorry but i don't think you understand what it actually takes to become something not so...shitty like every other kid who wants to make hoodies t shirts and hat company

i did notice that after i put it on, it was a idea so its not offical so its fine for right now to get the idea across, thanks for the negative comment, helps me get the best of both worlds. im not going to give up becuase this is my dream.

I'm going to summarize my comments into three categories, for sake of clarity:

POSITIVE

-It sounds like you're in this project for the right reasons, so I feel compelled to wish you the best of luck. Hope you can figure it out!

-The logo is--visually--very cool (I could totally envision this on a dope hoodie/flatbrim!) but, as others have mentioned, you're a long ways off from needing to worry about product branding.

NOT-SO-POSITIVE / CONCERNS

-If you are going to come to NS for business advice (a dubious strategy in the first place, but it seems to be playing out miraculously in your favor on this thread), I think you need to sit down and actually read/legitimately consider all the awesome advice that has been shared earlier in this thread before even worrying about funding/branding, namely:

a) Learn to use spell check / appear professional and polished to your clientele. People trust companies that make professional, clean impressions, and misspelling words like "definitely," "interested," and "because" doesn't give me (a potential consumer and an active member of the freeskiing community; i.e. part of your clientele) that "professional, clean impression" that will encourage me to buy a shirt over, say, Jibberish or Saga.

b) What problem are you fixing, or how are you approaching an over-saturated market from a novel angle? I'd recommend going and re-watching the video Mr.Bishop posted, because he really hammers on this point. Additionally, manny people have repeated this advice in the thread, and (as far as I can tell, no offense intended) you don't have an answer to that question. Saying "I really want to design and sell shirts" isn't going to mean anything to potential customers; especially since they have many other options in companies selling the same product who have provided them with meaningful incentive to choose their product over yours.

Examples of this incentive include athlete sponsorship, a compelling company backstory (like the Supreme example earlier), a highly competitive pricing structure (which likely will be difficult to offer as a startup with no supply chain infrastructure developed), or a unique product design (EC headwear tall beanies).

FINALLY, ENCOURAGEMENT

Every company starts somewhere, and the freeskiing demographic is an expanding potential market! You certainly haven't picked a bad idea, and if it really is "your dream" then you'll have the motivation to see it through. If there's any sector that can support a grassroots, for-the-love-of-the-sport effort, it's in freestyle sports like skiing. Your idea is plausible.

TL;DR: great enthusiasm, but slow down and take time to actually consider what others have been suggesting; it's nearly all solid advice from people who have done the same thing you want to accomplish.

In the words of Isaac Newton, "If I have seen further it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants".

In the freeskiing world, I'd daresay that industry professionals, athletes, and the administrators of NS are as close as you're going to come to standing on the shoulders of giants.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I just read some other comments and they are pretty accurate - you might want to slow down and focus on the most important things for your business. Make a plan of how you will create it, and a list of what needs to be done.

About the name, I really don't think I'm in a position to choose one for you, because it will be your company. If you aren't satisfied with my answer, and can't think of any better names, ask again and I will have a think about some possible names!

:-)

I really like the name I'm going to keep it with the logo. I have a huge list of steps to do before I actually make it , also leaving some of that info out to suprise you guys when the line drops

UPDATE:

Found a local shop that does printing for cheap to make a few sample peices.

Ordered a few bamboo tee shirts online at wholesale proces becuase bamboo shirts are unreal quality.
