Time to quit smoking

I can't believe I've smoked cigs for 2 years. I couldnt believe it after 1 year, and now 2? I'm taking a semester off from school, and I think its probably impossible to quit in college. so now I really want to quit but I'm not sure if I can. the problem is that I am really psychologically addicted to cigs. i only smoke 1-4 a day, but I just can't shake the habit.

I'm tired of thinking about cigarettes. I wish I could be OK with smoking, but I'm not. so I bought some patches and I'm ready to quit this bad habit once and for all.

So lend some support if you feel like it, or let me know if you've been through the same thing. whats a good way to stop? I've already started using the lowest strength patch for the past 2 days, but I still am craving. I was thinking for the first week, every day I go without a cig, I will treat myself to something cool, like taco bell or a movie from blockbuster. but I'm also interested in this new anti-smoking medicine, has anyone heard of it? do u think I will notice a difference in breathing and such after quitting?

please don't respond to this with "quit being a pussy" or anything along those lines, i dont give advice on things I dont understand, so dont advise me on cigarette addiction.

with only 1 to 4 per day i would suggest cold turkey but i am not sure what the body's reliance/dependence on nicotine is. im pretty sure the patches are effective, but i havent heard much about the medicine.

good luck, quitting is a pretty brave thing to do.

Good for you man.

I dont know if your into pharmacudicals but there is a new drug out called chantix.

It blocks the nicatine receptors in your brain so when you smoke you dont get anything out of it. I have a friend who recently quit using that stuff and it might work for you.

maybe nicorette gum if you have the money..it works. just remember to actually do the step down program instead of just chewing a shitload of them because thats what my whole family does haha. at least theyre not smoking

you do knwo he means the thing you smoke out of?

anyways dude i have been semi-addicted to cigars and for a little bit chew(sickest shit ever) but you have to just say "no". throw out or give your stuff away. maybe even sell it liek i did to my friend for about what its worth and you can see how much money you can save. also dude you just gotta keep being strong and saying im not gonna do thsi shit anymore.then you should be able to do it

you sound like me, except im now about 5 years deep. I used to smoke a pack a day, now I'm down to about 3 a day give or take, but its turning out to be the hardest part, my suggestion is to try to stay away from triggers in your day to day activities, leave your cigarettes at home, don't smoke on breaks/at work etc. if you can. It only takes small victories to build your willpower, and it sounds like what you need is confidence that you can go without, a patch probly puts more nicotine into your system than the cigarettes do, and for myself at least, I'm fine if my nicotine levels go down, I can go days on end without smoking if Im with nonsmokers, or on vacation or something, but I end up missing the act of smoking a cigarette, holding it, blowing smoke etc.

well I think the patch I'm taking is for 3 cigs or less a day. so it should be fine, and if it puts more nicotine in my system I sure as hell cant tell.

also hookah is infinitely worse than cigs. hate to break it to you fellow hookah owners, but its soooooo bad for you because of the instant light coals. if you use non instant lights and have a glass screen it isnt all that bad, but you are still inhaling about 10 cigs worth of smoke each sesh

dude if i where you i would for sure try to not use the patches or smoke. i mean it is all mental and if you really think you can do it you will be able to

good for you bud, stick with it you can do it, its hard im sure but just think of how its gonna affect ur health in such a positive way, good luck, we're all pullin for you

thanks. when I made this thread I didnt think I'd get much support, but this actually made me feel a lot better. I am really gonna try my hardest.

Fuck the patch, the gum any of those 'quitting alternatives', they are just crutches that allow nicotine into your system when you are trying to eliminate that very element from your body. Cold turkey is the way to go, if you can't handle it mentally, it's not meant to be. Just know it's not worth it to have a cigarette once you've quit and stick to it. Don't be a pussy.

I smoke when I'm drunk, and i fuckin hate it every single time I wake up afterwards. Worst smelling shit ever, hookah makes mile more sense.

I smoke when I drink too sometimes. But I've probably only had a pack or 2 of cigs in my whole life. When I wake up I'm just like whatever, it's not that bad.

its really not as hard when you hang out with friends that dont smoke cigs, but when some one whips one out your donezoo

Cold turkey man. I think it's the only way. You might screw up here and there, but DON'T BUY ANY. That's they key. If you don't have them on you during your daily activities, then the urge to want to smoke will eventually go away. I'm on 3 months here, and I've never felt better.

Yes, I'm still quit. I will admit that I have fucked up a few times. But I never went back.

Keep it up Drew! Believe me, you're going to feel the change. Your can actually breath (yeah, you thought you were breathing before, eh? haha), what you eat tastes better...things like that. It's amazing the difference 3 months makes.

You Can Quit Smoking!

Nicotine is a powerful addiction. If you have tried to quit, you know how hard it can be. People who are trying to quit smoking go through both physical and psychological withdrawal. Here are some tips for quitting.

Cravings

Drink a lot of liquids, especially water. Try herbal teas or fruit juices. Limit coffee, soft drinks, and alcohol - they can increase your urge to smoke.

Avoid sugar and fatty food. Try low-calorie foods for snacking - carrots and other vegetables, sugarless gum, air-popped popcorn, or low-fat cottage cheese. Don't skip meals.

Exercise regularly and moderately. Regular exercise helps. Joining an exercise group provides a healthy activity and a new routine.

Get more sleep. Try to go to sleep earlier and get more rest.

Take deep breaths. Distract yourself. When cravings hit, do something else immediately, such as talking to someone, getting busy with a task, or taking deep breaths.

Change your habits. Use a different route to work, eat breakfast in a different place, or get up from the table right away after eating.

Do something to reduce your stress. Take a hot shower, read a book, or exercise.

Psychological Needs

* Remind yourself every day why you are quitting.

* Avoid places you connect with smoking.

* Develop a plan for relieving stress.

* Listen to relaxing music.

* Watch a funny movie.

* Take your mind off a problem and come back to it later.

* Rely on your friends, family, and support group for help.

* Avoid alcohol. It lowers your chances for success.

^girl in my class apparently can't... shes colapsed her lungs three times. now they are closed off so she has the equivalent to 1 lung and we are only juniors in highschool. she still is smoking too.

good luck on quitting. I've never smoked so I can't imagine what it's like to go through that so I won't say anything other than I sincerely hope you make it through and quit.

Ive never smoked, so I cant understand how hard it must be to quit. I do know that in Ontario, if your a teenager trying to quit smoking, the pharmacies give you free niccorette gum and patches. Good luck on choosing a healthier lifestyle

iN ny, google NY smokers something, they give you free patches, gum and whatever else tehre is to stop. you really can stop, try hard

make sure to not bring ur ciggs with u anywhere. jsut dont buy anymore. and instead of smokin a cig when u start jonsin roll a weed cig instead. i gurrentee with in liek 3 weeks ur habit will be gone

I dont smoke much any more, but trust me, thats the last thing I should do. as soon as I smoke the ganj I get a craving unlike any other to smoke a cig. I will just ditch my friends who told me to wait 5 minutes because I couldn't handle waiting that long, I have to smoke one immediately and every second I'm not smoking one is torture. people say alcohol goes well with cigs. but nothing compares to a cig when youre blazed

I know not to buy any more but I can always find someone to bum one off, thats the problem. i am thinking of wearing a shirt around that says "do not give me a cigarette, seriously"

cigs are gross and disgusting and i only smoke cigars and dont plan on stopping anytime soon...

but yea man stopping smoking is one of the hardest things to do!!!! both of my grandparents have smoked simce they were 20 and theyr like 70 now..and theyve been tryin to quit for like 10 yrs lol

but ya just gotta have willpower, its all in your head man

good luck and i hope you quit

Still don't know how I'd do it... I thought once I got out of McDonald's and went to a less stressful job I'd be OK but my new job doesn't give breaks other than 5 minute cigarette breaks for smokers... how the hell am I going to quit now haha? Takes a ridiculous amount of willpower, good luck man.

glad everyone here is supporting you, and another good thing would be to get your friends in it to help you stop. i don't know what it is like, but i'm sure good support from your friends would help you too. and i definitly think you will notice a difference in your health once you are done smoking. you should check out some pictures online of peoples' lungs that have smoked for years...it's disgusting and it might help make you just go cold turkey.

really 4 or so a day isnt that bad. i smoked about 5 a day for a couple months, so im sure your addiction would be a lot harder to break but i just quit. and i really had no cravings or anything. every once and a while i can have a cig or cigar and be fine. i dunno, i dont find things very "addicting" if you will...

cigars are much more disgusting than cigs.

I made a facebook quit smoking support group for myself, and invited a bunch of my friends. if I cop out on this I'll feel kinda embarrassed.

It's a good time to quit now! I've been smoking for 5-6 years now, and it only gets harder the longer you have smoked! When you have been smoking for such a short periode as you have I don't think the nicotine patches or anything like that is necessary, just find something else to do when you want to smoke, like chew gum!

But yeah, the best way is to just not buy any, if you don't have them you can't smoke them.

I'm just not strong enough to not buy any, haha!

And seriously I don't think I could ever drink and not smoke! Wauw I wish I could quit!

Good luck man!

Someone said that if you get yourself addicted to something else, like lollipops or something, you'll get your mind off the cigs.

i quit three weeks ago. then i went out to the bar last night and smoked like 5-7 after getting drunk. today i feel like SHIT, total cigarette hangover. just a reminder of why i quit. not doing it again.

find something to do/play with every time you get a craving, like wear one of those rubber bracelets and just snap it on yoru wrist every time you get a craving, or find something else to fiddle with when you want a smoke.

yeah. my problem was that i wanted to smoke when i drove. so i bought a huge bag of dum-dums, and just had one everytime i wanted to smoke, and id roll down my window when id have them...i know it sounds weird, but its the habit of doing something/rolling your window down..etc, that you get addicted to

haha, i lol'd.

weird that i found that funny though, cause ive actually never seen them.
