Time for heli-coils?

I had my look p12 heel piece rip out today. After watching it rocket down the hill and almost take out a boarder I found it and it ripped out pretty cleanly. So I call a few shops, and the only one that didn't give me a price i laughed at uses plastic inserts. Are these plastic inserts going to hold up? Also have heard of using the old holes w/ epoxy w/ some steel wool in the holes, but that sounds kind of sketchy. These are my park skis and take a beating.

for 20 bucks dude go heli coils they are diesel. Although I had some plastic plugs once that were pretty good, I mean I ripped them out again but they took out huge chunks of core with them and exploded the ski in half... so I think either would probably hold pretty well. My skis had like 4 sets of holes in them so dont get scared I dont think thats terribly common for helis or plugs.

did you try goin right to the shop at the mountain when it happened? I've done that a few times and every time they've just remounted them for me for free.

heh I dont see how that would work. do you mean from the mountain? becuase I'm pretty sure somewhere in all the fine print they say "we will not give you anything for less than 10 times what it's worth"

when my old skis ripped out i took them back to the shop i got them at and had them mounted and they replaced them free

I'll probably get them coiled, i was just worried about plastic, but i think it will be fine. Skis and bindings have a few seasons on them, and i came off a box funny onto glare ice. I should have went to the shop at the hill, but it's an ex snowboard only jib park and i know they wouldn't have anything but snowboard binding inserts (which would be cool if those worked). Im not looking at getting them replaced, i'll buck up $20.

i dont have any direct experience but look at it logisticly. Metal is stronger then plastic, therefor get the metal. Just go with the heli coils, I am familar with the wood glue/ steel wool/ use the old hole's method tho. It does work but a proper heli coil job is way better

well I guess you and the guys at your shops are dicks man. everyone I've ran into was actually a good person who felt bad for me cuz my shit broke so they helped me out.

although since apparatnly my method hasn't worked out for you get those heli coils for 20 bucks. I dont know the difference very well between them and plastic, but I know that both are rediculously strong.

your so wrong bro its funny. I would love to help you out, so would most any one at any shop. But you cant waste labor and parts on things like that. If you wanted to pay for it, I would be on it in a snap and try and hook you up for cheap. But free at major resorts is just comedy, we are there to make the resort money, not help people for free.

As for metal vs plastic I don't think it matters one bit. At our shop we don't even carry the metal ones, because the plastic works so well. After you put epoxy in the hole that shit is stronger then metal. They may rip out again, but your gonna take about a half inch piece of the base out with it.
