Tibia pain

So they other day I heard my knee/tibia crack and I couldn't walk on it without pain so we went to the hospital and got x-rays and stuff and nothing was broken or fractured and I was sent home with crutches and today I can't straighten my leg at all and when I try it really hurts. What do I do?

is it your tibia or your knee? if you cant straighten it/have no range of motion and you heard a crack/pop it couldve easily been a ligament in your knee or around it (hamstring, calf, quad). that wouldn't have shown up on a xray, if its still bothering you i would suggest going back in and having your ligaments and muscles checked out, and possibly get a mri to check for the problem

It's my tibia and I can move it just not straighten it completely. The doc said it was sprained but I'm not sure

RICE it bitch.

Rest

Ice

Compress

Elevate

and taking an ibuprofen will help with the inflammation and being a little bitch.

good luck!

Quit being a pusscake.

But in all seriousness, I mean, technically you can't straighten your Tibia out as it is your entire shin. I have no joints in my shin. If you're having difficulties straightening your leg, I would assume either you damaged a muscle in your quadriceps(since that isn't what hurts, it is unlikely) or your patellar tendon. The patellar tendon is going to connect your Tibia to the knee joint, and affect things around it. Could possibly explain the pain around your tibial area. It would be helpful if you can explain the type of pain, is it muscle strain, a sharp stabbing pain in a localized area. There are also numerous ligaments in that area that could get damaged, and I am not an expert, but the major cruciate and colateral ligaments dont really restrict those forms of motion, so I wouldn't expect them to be majorly damaged. However, certain things within those areas can irritate other things.

If it doesn't improve within a day or two, I would definitely say consult a physician again, and possibly ask to be referred to an orthopedics specialist if YOU think something may be really wrong. I had a doctor misread an Xray the first time I saw him once, turned out I had a hairline fracture that was very difficult to see. Could have caused some problems in a whole healing process thing.

Not a doctor by any means, majoring in human physiology and applying to medical school this summer though. I also volunteer and work with physical therapists.

AR6rider knows his shit with all the medical stuff, sooo maybe if he drops in here you'll get a better answer.

not able to stretch it completely ? can you bend it completely ?might be a damaged meniscus ..

but get better medical help, i find it weird they simply sent you home without a diagnosis or further examination ...

A tibial plateau fracture (or a bad contusion) right under the meniscus (basically, a break in the top part of the tibia) and a meniscus tear feel similar. If you already went to a doctor to get the xray they probably worked you up for both, but they'd do an MRI to be definitive. If there is a position/motion where you can get a locking/popping/cracking sensation in your knee, that's more likely to be meniscus, which they'd probably need to go in and surgically fix. If it's a nondisplace tib. plateau, they'll tell you to rest for 6-8 weeks and possibly give you crutches. Or it could be neither and the swelling is whats giving you the pain.

I'd RICE it for a bit to see if it gets better and go to an orthopod if it doesn't after a week or 2.

Also take this advice. When I tore my meniscus, they sent me home from Urgent care and said it was just a pulled tendon/sprain. Definitely get it checked out more thoroughly, your symptoms were the same as mine.

there are no such things as friends on newschoolers only individuals vying for supreme power over the interwebs

At urgent care/E.R, they just kindof shoved my knee around to feel it, and gave me crutches and told me to RICE. They said if it didnt feel better after a week i should go for scans, and of course it didnt so I think I got an mri and they confirmed a meniscus tear.

Then I got surgery and the doc snipped the torn part off and recovery was less than a month.

Overall wasnt the worst experience ever

your tibia naturally twists as you walk but I don't think that's what we're talking about here.

Ok, I can now almost straighten it out and I don't have nearly as much pain as the first 2 days so am I good now? Because I am starting to put small amounts of weight on it too
