Thoughts on Clayton Vila's FIVE?

Dude is as fuck at skiing and tried some burly shit. Also the whole video in general was good, i'm a sucker for something thats different so I enjoyed it.

havent gotten the time to watch it yet but if that sentence doesn't make you want to watch then i don't know what will...

Great to see someone putting a 'ski' movie out there that encompasses who they are beyond JUST a skier. Cool to see Clayton showcase his editing, creativity and personality. Takes balls to put your self out there like that, but no one ever questioned him on that. Skiing was amazing and for sure a refreshing change from your standard ski edit.

Im a sucker for straight up hip-hop and bangers. I couldnt get into the side story thing at all. Completely pointiless. Amazing skiing but overall I think it was a lot less impressive then other season edits from clayton.

To be honest, I've never skied urban before probably never will. I'd rather hike pillows and all that jazz. But this video was one of my favourites at IF3. I'm really liking the direction that ski films are going right now. Having a plot or a side story just adds so much more than just pure ski porn.

I'm really on the fence with the whole ski "movie" thing. One one hand, it's a unique way for skiers to express some sort of abstract idea, rather than just "Hey, look at five minutes of me killing it," but at the same time, I feel like you lose the momentum of a segment and the pacing can feel off.

For example, Clayton's segment in Mutiny is one of my favorite segments of all time. The skiing was on point, and the music and editing built up perfectly to the massive concrete wall ride. I remember pausing the movie after his segment ended and thinking to myself something along the lines of "What the fuck just happened!?" When I watched Five, I was certainly impressed by the caliber of the skiing, but it was tough for me to get into it when the skiing was consistently interrupted by story.

skiing was killer and the video in general was pretty good but the more i watched it the more it hurt to not see his footy in stepts last yearly movie

The skiing was insane, but I'm not a fan of the ski "movie" with a plot and storyline. Sure it can have an underlying meaning behind it like, "Fuck it and ski" or "Just have fun" kind of vibe, but I had a hard time getting into The Recruitment and Five because I was thinking, "What the hell does stabbing a teddy bear have to do with skiing?"

The more you watch the film, the more you start to figure out the underlying meaning of everything that is happening. Many people don't care for a story at all and just want to watch skiing, but I liked the message it told and respect Clayton for the way he put it all together.

Well the natural, for me at least, thing to say would be that the girl's relationship with the bear is basically a symbol of Villa's relationship with skiing (urban). The conclusion would then be that the toy bear turns into a real bear after being punished for his acts just as Villa comes back a more grown up/sicker skier after the crashes...

But... I think that NS members could have other views on this... Ladies and gentlemen.. Fire away!

This is from my other thread that got removed, but I really think the idea of making a segment with a side story is really quite interesting. Some guys in the thread had some cool ideas aswell

Nice try, veetuzka, but I'm onto your tricks.

Honestly? I really didn't enjoy it at all. I love Clayton's skiing, both in the segment and in his other segments, but with a sport that most people find so fun, I don't really see the point. The whole ski "movie" thing was really more distracting and depressing than anything.

Having said that, and despite my opinion, good for him. He tried something new. I may not have loved it, but its cool to see someone get out there and put out something different. Props for that much

Whole concept would probably seem a whole lot weirder to me if I hadn't just watched Next Friday's 10 minute intro.

I was all about the movie, clayton killed it. non-stop bangers. But there is something about this trend of 1 skier free movies that I just dont like (ie clayton wallisch ahmet edollo bdog).

Maybe its the experience of watching a ski movie start to finish and seeing it as an an entire project from a team of skiers and filmers that I enjoy b/c this just feels like an edit, not a season long film project.

also would have liked to see clayton in the last annual stept movie.

skiing was spot on, but that's a given when you talk about Clayton. i defiantly was not expecting that abstract sort of edit, not sure i was going to like it when i saw the first minute or two, but i wound up loving it.

I was a bit confused with it. No doubt that it was sweet and amazing skiing, but the whole theme path got a little weird. I expected the message to come a little more from himself, talking or whatever, rather than a girl stabbing a teddy bear. Super sick part though creds to Clayton for that.

Skiing was obviously dope. I thought the plot was interesting so I'll take a stab at interpeting it when I don't have so much fucking work to do. For now I'll just say I'm almost certain that the girl and the bear represent skiing and Vila respectively. There is evidence to that it might actually be the opposite which would be interesting, but bear = vila, girl = skiing seems more likely. Still not sure how the bird and squirrel people play into it.

I think the bird and the squarel maybe represent his friends he skis with

(First I'd like to say that I think there are some differences to this online version from what I say at IF3.)

After I watched it at If3 I thought the following for myself.

Teddy Bear= vila

Girl= Girlfriend

Pigeon/rabbit masked dudes= personification of skiing/ friends/ crew

Stripper girl= random hoe possibly a personification of skiing

Teddy starts off with his girlfriend spending time and skiing some. Shots are pretty much alternating hanging with her or hitting urban. Then there is a crash followed by a flash of the pigeon mask , no more shots of the girlfriend for a little bit while we get a bunch of skiing shots and some shots of teddy fucking around, drinking, a shot of the girlfriend alone at the table, teddy fighting, and teddy with a different girl (the one on the stripper pole).

Then we've got the breakdown of the girlfriend mouthing "Fuck" while the pigeon said "don't... just keep the balance" At IF3 I'm almost positive this said "Don't you see... It's about balance" I think this is a clever plan on the fact that hitting rails is about balancing but more importantly having balance in your life. Clayton says he doesnt like being called 'that skier kid' because he has a lot of other roles in his life.

This segways into a montage of the result of losing balance on rails and in life as we see clayton fall a shit ton while Teddy gets stabbed and torn apart by his girlfriend for cheating on her. After the clip of Clayton getting X Rays on his collar bone, which ended up being broken and interrupting his season for a month and a half the girlfriend finally finished her assault on teddy and tosses him to the side.

Here we then see the bitch look up to find a giant ass bear. Clayton is back to stomping tricks, after the injury and is not looking back. The girl seems to want him back but he just can't care about her anymore after she hurt him so badly. Clayton is shown having quick flashbacks to the scenes with teddy and girl and so on but they end quickly. Clayton greases a lipslide on a C DFDFDFD (shoulda blind 2 out) and the bunny lights another cigarette because skiing still gets the lions share of Clayton's focus and passion instead of the girlfriend.

To me this said that our relationships need as much attention as we give our skiing or we can't truly be happy. Its ok to pursue those snow related passions, but skiing will never love you back like a hot blonde from California will.

girl=hot

skiing=sick

story=hard to follow

overall= i like the change of pace this brought. and fuck am i stoked to ski after watching this and keynote skier

That was fucking awesome. Clayton bring so much to urban it is unreal. I don't think there was one repeated trick in the whole edit and there wasn't one switch-up. The technicality of his riding is on another level. That switch lip to switch on the close-out was sooo sick, I wish more skiers would bring switch tricks to urban. The wallrides to rail and gap were gnar as fuck. His blunt on that elevated close-out, are you kidding me?!?

The editing was totally unique and I dug it. Super stylized and artistic. You can interpret what you want from the bear and the subtext but I think what makes it art is that it is ultimately up to you to interpret it how you want. It left me wanting more after 10 minutes which I haven't felt watching an online edit in a long time.

10/10

Teddybear Crisis vibes anyone?

Other than that.. the skiing was good, as expected. And I get that he wants to think outside of the box and tell a story, not just stack trick after trick on top of another. But no matter how hard I try to justify the almost naked butts I fail. I'm pretty sure he could have told the same story without a half-naked girl and the film angles that reminded me of porn. Just filming those parts a bit differently and I dunno, skipped the "slowmo walk out of the pool" and it would have been passable. Now I'm just irked.

*patiently awaits the downvotes* :)

just watched it and it was fucking GOOD. i fully dug the weird vibes and the side story. this is great for skiing movies.

although I understand your concern, I personally think the way it was filmed did make an impact in more than a "damn that ass" way. To go along with what tall tee had to say about the plot, I think a girl shredding and having some hawt boy friend (or whatever girls like) might somehow have the same effect. I imagine there are some girl shredders that also struggle to balance skiing with other things.

Notice how she has more clothes on during the stabbing etc. which seems to relate to "balance" as well.

I think the way it was filmed evoked emotion in a way that otherwise wouldn't have been there had it been filmed in a more PG way.

That movie was art. I loved it much more after watching it a second time and understanding the story more. Watching it made me think about how great it has been to see the progression of ski movies throughout the years.

I've read a lot of different perspectives regarding the theme, and each one gives more insight to a unique and captivating video. Overall, it was the most stylized piece of skiing I've ever seen, and with that its something to remember. It definitely is genre breaking, and did more then The Recruitment could have ever have tried to do.

I'm pretty dang impressed, each shot was absolutely huge, and with the vibe it gave it'll be remembered in the long run as something that was definitely progressive.

I thought it was terrific. Didn't think much about the meaning yet, but definitely enjoyed the mix of banger skiing and fine ass.

Well that was different. I liked it! Crazy urban and gnarly crashes, butt the way that girl single handedly dismembered that bear was ridiculous!

Interesting, but wasn't for me. I definitely see it as more of a passion project he did for himself rather than something meant to be liked by the masses, so I don't feel bad in not liking it.

I don't know who got all artsy fartsy, but just go straight bangers for 10 minutes....ie. The Wallisch Project. Bears, chicks, pools, knives, metaphors...save it for the college kids.

Everybody likes straight bangers and a few solid wrecks.

NO.

if everyone made a movie of straight bangers and wrecks our industry would be boring as fuck..

its time for HOLLYWOOD and bunny rabbits and especially Rilakkuma

chicks, bears, pools, and knives definitely isn't the common definition of artsy fartsy. obviously some people are going to appreciate Clayton's endeavor at doing something real different and others won't. but dumbasses like you saying everything should be straight bangers and wrecks is what is gonnna kill all the creativity in this industry

go.....yourself
