Thoughts on Cameo?

Just learned about this service today, and I don’t know what to think.

So, thoughts on Cameo in the ski community? Call me old fashioned, but when I was a kid and I wanted to ask Wallisch or LJ (or anyone else) a question I just shot them a message on NS or insta and had a quick convo. They were more than chill and got little 14 y/o me pretty stoked on the exchange. I mean, since when did skiers start charging fans for a minute of their time like they’re Beyoncé? I understand it’s gotta be difficult to sift through a loaded inbox, but this doesn’t seem like the answer.

On a side note, if Durtschi is on it, it’s only a matter of time before he’s plugging Kai Jones’ account.

Bro I think you're misunderstanding the app. You pay to have celebrities record video messages for you (happy birthdays, congratulations, etc.) not paying to ask them questions.

Still pretty dumb IMO and also got a laugh that Durtschi is listed as an "olympic skier"

I understand that it’s a one-time shoutout/message. I’m just talking about an interaction in general. That example was just to demonstrate how easy it should be to hit up anyone in the ski community, specifically, with a message and not a payment.

Ahh gotcha. Very true too, my favorite part about Newschoolers is how often Orange names will chime in/stay active on here.
 
TBH i think it is kinda lame and hokey as well. Call me old fashioned as well.

It was such a treat to get a response from pros on ns or Fb back in the day or when you ran into them on the hill was also a treat (still is). But I remember the day I made a myspace just to add Candide Thovex to my friends (probably was a fake account but 13 y.o me was still blown away)
 
I agree with you OP, Im old fashioned too and think this Cameo is a joke but if people are paying their prices, the famous will do shit like this. IMO, NS seems to be the only legit place you can really rub elbows with the pros. Look at the recent thread "Ask Tom Wallisch anything" and he is replying to the questions, is he getting paid for it? I doubt it but my hats off to him for taking the time to answer all of our questions(granted we all have a little extra time right now,lol). I undestand pro skiers need to make ends meet, but that's just selling out. Lame af.

Put it this way.

Imagine Cameo didn't exist. Woodsy puts out an Instagram post saying 'I'm doing shoutouts for fans, but there's a catch, you have to pay me $30 for each one'. I don't think that'd go down too well in this community, in fact I think he'd get torn a new one, especially on Ns.

But because it's on an website, that makes it okay?? It's the type of thing you'd expect from so-called youtubers or influencers or whatever, basically people with no shame
