Those who've worked in a ski shop, what's it like?

Working at my nearest ski shop has piqued my interest for a while now, those who've done it/have done it what's your experiences with it? Pros and Cons?

do they do rentals/demos?

what job would you be doing?

what sort of vibe does the store give off?

being a ski tech is pretty fun if theres no rentals.

being a sales associate is fun if the shop caters to hardcore riders as opposed to tourists.

either way, money is money.

They don’t do rentals as far as I know of or demos, I’d most likely start out as being a sales guy, but I do know there’s a lot of people responsible for mounting ofc, stocking inventory, boot fitting, that sort of thing. It definitely attracts all crowds tho, ever since the closest ski shop to me went out of business, it’s the only shop in a 1 hour radius for me

I enjoyed helping people and talking about stuff that excited me. Pay was whatever. Some clients are annoying but most are okay. The deals you get are absolutely killer. I learned a good amount too. Boss was annoying as hell though. He was a micro manager but he wasn’t in everyday.

If you're young, I say why not.

The hours are always when you should be skiing instead, so it's torture. It can be cool helping people choose gear when the stoke is high, but most customers are just looking for the cheapest thing, and for children's equipment. Waxing can be OK when you have a well equipped shop and music to listen to.

your co workers are the most important part of your job regardless of what it is, if they're cool your most likely gonna have a positive experience, regardless of the job.

but tbh its pretty fried. prolly wouldn't do it again.

After a decade you'll get pretty jaded, but out the gate it's so cool to see all the new gear, get swag from reps, and always have your skis waxed. Highly recommend if you get a chance!

Are you planning working in store or workshop?

Been bike and ski mechanic for nearly decade now. Love my job, colleges and good discount deals on bikes and skis. Medium low salery but never gone home after working day and wanted to work anything else. Seasons changes, new equipment coming into the store are exiting plus got chances on interactions that opened to fullfill my skier dreams, like taking part in filming and skiing with Kimbo,Vinnie, Mango, Øystein and list goes on.

Must mention that often you won`t be able to ski when conditions are prime and it`s peak work season. But at my recent workplace as workshop worker I can adjsut and flex a little bit my working hours, so I get to ski almost everyday.

Lots of standing, very chill co-workers, answering the phone, cool customers that tell you interesting things related to skiing. Oh and a non livable wage.. best part for sure
