This Was Cool

Last week, my dad purchased a mountain bike that was in excellent condition, from a seemingly normal seller.

Later that day, my little brother was online on PinkBike, which I am sure a lot of you know about. He found an add for a stolen bike that looked exactly like the one my dad just bought that day.

It was the same bike.

My pops has always lived by “honesty isn’t the best policy – it’s the only policy”.

Dad contacted the gentlemen, and he arranged to pick it up from him.

When he arrived, not only did the guy reimburse in full what my dad ‘bought’ the bike for from the scumbag thief, but he also threw in $100 extra as a reward and because he was so grateful.

this wasn’t thousands upon thousands of dollars, but enough money to think twice about dropping all at once haha

On the off-chance you buy used; skis, bikes, snowboards, whatever… do your due diligence. And if something like this happens, do the right thing. In the end, something better always works out.

I’m not sharing this story to put myself or a family up on some pedestal of excellence. I just wanted to share because something positive came out of a potentially super negative situation, which isn’t common these days!

Cheers everyone

Respect.

has your dad reported the seller to the authorities? bike theft is taken seriously (not to mention sale of stolen property!) in most places and i am sure they'd like to know about it.

snitches get stiches

you aren't snitching on a criminal for selling stolen property to you... you snitch if you rat on your collaborators in crime. come on yo!

There's always something good in store for people who do the right thing, even if it means losing your stuff (that may not really be yours)

Little bit of a follow up - I’m OP’s little brother.

We contacted the authorities and explained what was going on. We were instructed to give all the information that we had to the rightful owner of the bike. Basically all the information has to come through one person to the authorities to simplify the process.

we haven’t heard anything yet. Unfortunately bike thefts are way too common by us.

Sounds like its time to move to greener pastures and whiter mountains my dood.

It's not that we live in like a crap area, it's more the fact that the mtb market is SO FLOODED in Seattle, that the few scumbag thieves that lurk have a lot of targets... but I see what you mean haha
