first of all, im not a punk preacher. im more into reggae than punk now, but there are some things which are just over the line. like this:

i was in Strings And Things (very cool music store) and i was waiting w/ my guitar, cuz i had just had a lesson, for my dad to pick me up. im wearing a Rancid t-shirt and a blue zip-hoodie w/ a million saftey pins and some patches. the patches were the cloth ones usually associated with punks, but i dont care, i just like the music and the message and im trying to communicate the message to others. so, anyways, im standing by the door and this kid comes up to me w/ spiked hair, a New Found Glory t-shirt and a zip hoodie w/ a big Blink 182 patch on it. he looks im in the eyes and say 'Punk rock power dude.' i tell him to get the hell away from me and he gives me the finger. i notice that on his nuckles is written PUNK on one hand, and RAWK on the other. do you know anyone like that? i hate them with a burning passion

i was at a surf and skate shop in rhode island talking to this guy that works there, and these two guys walf in, on wearing baby blue tee with short, tight black pants and spiked hair. the other guy was wearing a metal ball necklace and wearing tight black jeans and tee with a wallet chain, also w/ spiked hair. these guys walked past me to the skateboards, i was wearing jeans and an 'i rollerblade' tee, they just looked at me like, who the hell are you? it was so funny b/c they looked just like blink182, walking and looking all 'badass'

yeah whats up with that. i just hope our sport never falls vitcim to those kind of people. skateboarding has changed so much that its not even about skateboarding anymore but more of a punk image. i feel snowboarding is headed in that same path, i just hope we can stand strong and not fall to it as well

 
skiing wont fall to that level anytime soon, the publics view of our sport is still that its a gay old mans sport, go somewhere that dosnt have skiing and tell everyone ur a skier and theyll probly call u a fag

hahaha yeah thats true. i whenever i tell people that what i do they have no clue. the best answer for them is to throw in a ski video and amaze them. yeah the steriotype wont hit us soon but it will come in the future after snowboarding hits its peak and starts to drop b/c it happens with all sports until something new comes and sparks new interests much like newschool has hit skiing. newschool and freesking has created that spark to relight the greatness of skiing that was in a dull point

skateboarding has come in and out of favor dozens of times. The people that get any niche through the tough times are the people that dont care and do it for the fun of it. to say skateboarding or punk or skiing or anything 'dug its own grave' by letting in big companies is a load of shit. Its popular because little shithead kids tell their rich/connected daddies and they proceed to gouge the dumb, gullible people that jump on bandwagons. real, true skiiers, skaters, pianists, whatever didnt submit to anything except their desire to do what they do. so laugh at the retards because they'll be gone as soon as something isnt 'cool' anymore. and yeah punkers hate to hear it but corporate america has a hold on EVERYONE. Unless you make your own skatebords outta plywood. that'd be hardcore.

The general public knows noting about skiing at all. These kids from texas came up to the cottage next to me for the fourth of july, and they saw me on my trampoline. Thay asked what I was doing, and I told them I was practicing for skiing. The looked at me funny and said 'skiing? skiing is gay. No one can do stuff like that on skis. Skiing is for old people...snowboarding is where its at. etc, etc.'

I know that they were from texas, but people around here are the same way. In our school ski club, where everyone used to ski, probably about 80% switched over to snowboarding and/or snowblading. They still think skiing is an old peoples sport, and they ride the lift up and watch skiiers throw down everyday. I was watching the x-games with my snowboarding friend this year, and as tanners run and pep's run came on, he was just sitting there the whole time. At the end, he said 'They could just do that because they were on gay skis, doing it on a snowboard is so much harder' I was like what the fuck, what would you know about it?

We have a barrier to becoming mainstream and that snowboarding. Snowboarding is so much more well thought about to the general publc that skiing, and it will be the 'cool' thing to do for a lot of people for years to come. Until we prove to the public that we are better/more impressive than snowboarding, we will never be like skateboarding. When people think of snow sports, they think of snowboarding and skiing. 90% of them would pick snowboarding.

Wow, I couldn't agree more. Just an example... a lot of my friends used to be skiers, and this winter we took a huge 30ppl trip to whiteface and rented this huge house. All those friends that used to ski either snowboard now or they snowboarded for the trip. Granted they weren't hardcore skiers to begin with, that shit just rubbed me the wrong way. Nothing against snowboarding but I hated being looked at as the odd one out and the fag stuck on an old-man's sport. We went to the terrain park at whiteface (not much of a park while we were there) and they couldn't even do a 180 on a snowboard. I'm not good by any means, but I did manage to do a few 3s with grabs and a slightly corked 5. I got no response from my friends at all. They all thought that shit must be easy on skis. On the other hand they all went nuts when one of my friends finally did a 180 on a snowboard... I was pretty pissed. Not to mention I had to wait around as they humped around on their snowboard sitting down every 2 turns. Real boarders r cool, but poser boarders that don't know shit about skiing and diss it... even if they're my friends... piss me off

 
im glad that skiing hasnt headed that direction. id rather be more laid back. i dont ski to be mainstream, and if you do, then take up snowboarding. id rather the people think that i was a old man skier, than a mainstream punk like most other sports of our kind have.

 
i wish that skiing could stay were it is right now (in popularity that is). it seems the more we progress the more 'posers' will show up. so if it was up to me i would love for skiing to stay were it is right now before its goes mainstream. although i do want skiing to progress and become better i just dont want the popularity too

Then there will so many people, but only a small majority of them will be able to actually throw anything down? Like, my hill has TONS of boarders. BUt all they do is sit on the hill, its so annoying. I, for the most part, dont like boarders. I really respect those who are good at what they do but all these little punks picking it up because it is cool have ruined my image of snowboarders. I just fear that if skiing becomes just as mainstream, there will be all these little skiing punks who cant do shit.

who cares what the image is? who cares if skiing becomes the cool thing to do? Yeah it may become mainstream, but more money means higher payed athletes, more events, better films, and better equipment. I don't see any wrong in that.

I ski because I love it. Even if one day there are a hundred 'posers' out there, I will continue to do my thing,

yes, GhostDragon has a very good point. although, i dont really want skiing to have to prove anything to the public. if a lot of people think skiing is an old folks sport, i have no problem with that. however i do have a problem with people who make false judgements (eg tricks are easier on skis) who have no background knowledge to back their statements up. obviously, theres nothign that i can do about it, but it just pisses me off.

nofxpunkaf, im very confused about your story. if youre still wearing your pins and patches and stuff, then why dont you like punk? if you dont like punk, then why are you wearing the clothes that are 'associated' with it? the guy had no idea that you dont like punk, and therefore said 'hi'. i dont really understand why you would shut him down even though you look the same as him. for all you know, maybe he listened to reggae too.

I've skiied since I was 3, even tried snowboarding for a year, but I went back to skiing cause I love doing it so much. I personally dun care if skiing becomes popular. I just dun want to get a bunch of shit from kids who can't do anything, or even from people who are better than me. It's dumb to do the same thing to snowboarders. True, there are people who are gunna give ya shit, but who gives a fuck? You'll get over it.

About the punk rock thing...you could have at least been nice to the kid. There are some people I know that where safety pins on their clothes and so on, but I dun give them shit, cause most of them are really pretty cool to hang with. I am, by no means punk, but that doesn't mean I'm not nice to them.

hey marlin, punk isn't just a genre of music. its a way of life. it just a way of expression. it's a way of thinking. saying that if he didn't want to be classified by what he was wearing, he shouldn't be wearing it, is complete bullshit. Basically, you're saying that if you don't want to be judged, don't wear anything you can be judged by. Guess what? EVERYONE judges/classifies oneanother, whether they vocalize it or not. Changing the way you dress won't make a difference if it's not who you are. i think punk's more of a subculture of individuals, than a movement. It's not necessarily about the music anymore, more about the way of life and expression.

you guys make a very good point saying that no matter how many 'posers' and little shit head stuck up rich boys enter our sport in years to come you gotta just keep doin what your doin because you love it.

but its hard to ignore and something has to be done when the time comes. right now skiing is unspoiled. its at its peak in the skier's minds cuz its progressing every time somebody clicks in but its still low key so its like our own thing. thats what makes most people freeski. theres nothing wrong with falling in love with a sport becasue its not as exposed as others and you wanted to be different. thats what its all about.

now be honest here.you see ten snowboarders sitting down watching another snwoboarder jump. the one jumping does a flailing 180 with no grab and barely lands and the group of boarders sitting down all start laughing and ripping on the kid in the worst way. then one of them goes up and doesnt do any better. doesnt that just rub you the wrong way? is that how you want our sport to be? i dont know about you guys but thats just not cool, even if it doesnt bother you. its still there and its fucked up because it tottaly breaks down the unity of people that participate in the sport. i dont see many skiers rippin on people for doin a sloppy trick they are just learning. most skiers help eachother out and are always pushing eachother. and we all need to keep it that way and stop talking trash about everybody cuz we dont want to end up like 80 percent of the snowboarders out there now do we? when little 'poser' kids come into our sport, dont hate. just encourage and show some respect and mabye you will receive some and they will spread it around as well. its all about unity and repsect on the mountain and skiing will stay where it is right now amongst the real riders no matter how much it blows up. im out
