Muslim Workers File Lawsuit Against New Brighton Tortilla Factory



MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ A group of Muslim workers claim they were fired

by a New Brighton tortilla factory for refusing to wear uniforms rather

than their traditional loose-fitting clothing.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations says six Somali women

claim they were ordered by a manager to wear pants and shirts they

considered immodest by Islamic standards. The women have filed a

religious discrimination complaint with the federal Equal Employment

Opportunity Commission.

Mission Foods parent company Gruma Corporation denies that any

employees were terminated or disciplined at the New Brighton plant. But

the company says the six women have been relieved of their duties for

the time being and may ultimately lose their jobs if they don't wear

the uniforms.

boo frickidy who if they were fired, if you dont wear the uniform you are supposed to, well tough luck sister. if i regularly showed up to work wearing the wrong cloths i would be fired also.

 
i could see that type of thing being planed. all you have to do is be muslim, apply to a job requiring a uniform, dont wear a uniform, sue the company, and get cash.

i mean, seriously, if you dont like the uniform then dont get the job..

what would anyone say if a striper said, i dont like this uniform and its against my religion..
 
Listen somalians, we're in America, a company says wear a uniform, you either wear it, or don't take the job. grow up and stop trying to make easy cash.
 
five words for those women with regards to filing a federal case: separation of church and state. four more words to them in general: get the fuck out
 
Separation of church and state? I don't think that’s going to have any effect on filing a federal case. There was a case where 3 Muslim men were ordered to cut their beards in order to keep their jobs as firefighters because it jeopardized their safety. It was taken to a federal level and the judge ruled that it infact did not put them in danger; they could keep their religious beards and their jobs regardless of what the fire department had to say.
 
This really doesn't have anything to do with that. They are being asked to change the clothing they wear, which only happens to be part of their religious beliefs. Religion isn't the direct issue, this is just another stupid court case from the breeding ground of baseless lawsuits. Yay 'Murika!
 
from the story it seemed like they refused to change their clothes because of their religious beliefs. in compliance with separation of church and state, a federal ruling should disregard the beliefs, therefore ruling in favor of the company.
 
Its called a human rights violation. Everyone has the right to pratice whichever religion they choose. What they would be suing for is that the company disregarded their right to religion and they want damages. They wont get it. Unless the company let them go in bad faith, they company his the right to make them where the uniform. Its a standard each one of their employees is expected to uphold. They are discriminating against on group. They are setting a standard, most likely written out in their employee manual that employees must come to work dressed in the company uniform.
 
thats such bullshit, like someone elses said if i showed up to work in my new era hat and armada sweatshirt i would expect them to tell me to change or get fired. and in a factory you cant just wear anything because if they had their huge loose shirts on and something got tangled in a machine and ripped off their arm and put it in a box of chips i think the company would be facing a lot bigger lawsuit than this will end up being..bullshit

East Indians who won't wear helmet when on a motorcycle because of their turban. Sure I respect their religion but when they try to challenge the law like that its just ridiculous. Put on a helmet and quit bitchin..
 
Ya wearin loose clothes around the machines they're probly usin is dangrous cause you can get pulled in. its so dumb, its not to discriminate, its so you dont get killed.
 
The rules were created a very long time ago, when they were much more applicable than they are now. I think that no drinking and no smoking or any drugs/mind influencing things is a very clean way of life and if I had the willpower to do it, I would.

If you believe in God, praying is an essential part of life. It's not blasphemy if you believe in it. Sounds like you're a little ignorant. The rules were very applicable back then, but I do agree that there are some that are kind of dumb nowadays.
 
That is fucking rediculous the reason for no beards is for safety and looking for looking profesional if you don't like the rules you should get the fuck out. I'm christian and work in Kitchens I don't start bitching when people start saying god damn and jesus christ in the kitchen because if I don't like it I an get the fuck out.
