This is heartbreaking.

two sides to every story. not saying one is right but hydro electric plant sounds legit. I don't understand why that much forest would need to be cut down for it tho.

"That is, the death sentence of the peoples of Great Bend of the Xingu river is enacted."

Is that english? wtf does that mean?

lol i'm sure that chief/his tribe has consumed electricity in some way so they should be thankful that their country is taking steps to produce more

when they dam the river it floods a massive area above the dam, which creates the pressure to turn the turbines. problem is, as it is with almost every dam ever built, that there are lots of people and animals living in the area above the damn thats about to become a lake.

If i did the math right, the damn will flood 1544.40863437 square miles. (disclaimer: my math probably isnt right)

Well that sucks, but what about the millions of people in Rio without power for hours because some pigeon hit a power line. They need more power. But taht doesnt mean that the indians should get the shaft just give em some other land yo.

As sad as it is who ever said there are always two sides is right. How many people will benefit vs the tribes who will lose cultural land? Modern times adapt or die out...

i dont really give a shit, bro.

if i cant say that gay people shouldnt be annoying and flamboyant then its not ok to say that indigenous people need to adapt or die.

Gay conversations in every thread for the last month.....enough already this thread is about the fucking Brazilians not gays

Would adapt or fail be less controversial? Ididnt mean adapt or be exterminated. This has no relationship to the holocaust

super shitty

and to the people saying two sides to a story, i would love to hear the other side..

'The environmental impact study estimated that 41,000 jobs will be created during the 10 years of construction, including 18,700 direct and 25,000 indirect jobs, according to a government fact sheet on Belo Monte. People are already moving in, registering for employment, according to the National Employment Service offices in Altamira, Para.'

God this is painful to read. How in gods earth is this considered clean?!? For fucks sakes. there's more important things that generated jobs. Modern 'progression' is nothing more the degression as far as I'm concerned. People never learn. People like you make my blood boil. Never think beyond your own culture, it's pathetic.

Oh good, you've done some professional engineering and come up with a cost/benefit analysis. Share.

Places that are prime for hydro have already been tapped, or will be tapped soon enough. It's gonna happen. Benefits will always outweigh the costs in that sector.

No not really an opinion, I did a capstone on it. But hey, whatever silly comments show you don't have anything intelligent to say!

WRONG. Brought up, trained and enculcated by western society will lead you to these conclusions. The sad thing is that university education is solely based on western science, therefore compassion gets disregarded. Emotions/life are everything. Modern societal "benefits" are superficial and temporary. Costs will always outweigh the benefits. Hugely.

so what you're saying is that their culture is right, whereas ours is wrong?

I actually agree with you in this thread...it's a shame that it's happening to these people. But I'm just curious about these points, because it seems like you're saying we need to tolerate and learn about all other cultures...except our own, which we should do away with.

why you mad tho? i'll elaborate further on why this is a good call for Brazil:

i live in a county that own three dams. (well actually four but one is pretty small) it's pretty kickass:

we have a 7 million dollar budget surplus,

our county sells power to other cities on the west coast (we producer of electricity rather than a consumer),

cheap 100 mbps upload/download fiber-optic internet (maintained by the PUD),

this November the county will own one dam with no debt,

and a unionized public utility district that employs a few thousand people that provides healthcare for the employees family and 'prevailing wage' pay.

when the county built these dams we had to flood some native american sites where they had painted on the rocks etc etc. sure it's a sad reality but the tribes were not making productive use of the land...i know this sounds wrong but it's the truth.

also if you think modern progression is wrong i suggest you get off the INTERNET and stop using your COMPUTER.

yea productive use of the land is obviously not living without electricity, off the land, cut off from the bull shit. you are right!

this theory is literally like some other opinionated group coming in and blowing up the twin towers because it doesn't fit in with their opinions of a productive life style. wait.....

just because somebody has a differing opinion doesn't mean they're a terrorist. building a dam wasn't meant to kill anybody either.

again, wtf is up with people bashing electricity/modern society using highly sophisticated computer networks and personal computers? it seems self-defeating

Governments do not want to insure nuclear power plants and there is much more profit in hydro and wind power generation. Would you rather they put a nuclear facility next to the river?
