Schools have avoided teaching the Holocaust and the Crusades in history lessons because they are concerned about causing offence to Muslim pupils or challenging "charged" versions of history which children have been taught at home, government research has found.

A report for the Department for Education and Skills found that a history department in a northern city had avoided selecting the Holocaust as a GCSE topic for fear of confronting "anti-semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial" among some Muslim pupils.

Another school decided to teach the Holocaust despite anti-semitic sentiment among students, but avoided the Crusades as "their balanced treatment of the topic would have directly challenged what was taught in some local mosques".

The report, Teaching Emotive and Controversial History, also revealed that one school was challenged by Christian parents for teachers' treatment of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

A DfES spokesman said: "It's up to schools to make a judgment on non-compulsory parts of the national curriculum. It is a broad framework and there is scope for schools to make their own decisions."

Teaching of the Holocaust is expected to become compulsory under the new national curriculum from next year.

it is a FACT that it happened. There is NO denying it. I cannot believe that anybody can be rude, selflish, unintelligent, and flat out racist enough to make believe it didn't happen. I'm not even jewish, but these guys are fucking retarded. How can you deny a fact? How about we deny that the US is a country. Or deny that World War 1 happened. These guys are idiots

I can't understand why they think it's alright to do somehting like this. I'm catholic, I went to a catholic highschool, where they did teach evolution and other things that we're supposedly not meant be taught. Evolution is something that's still debatable because some parts aren't completely figured out. But something like the Holocaust actually happpened, it's one of the frist well documented holocausts in history.

Its fucked that religion banned people from learning history. History can be offencive, but it prevents us from making the same mistakes in the future.

We learned about the Holocaust for all of one day, in 7th grade. It's never been brought up majorly since. My teacher hinted at it in class the other day, saying how people argue that it didnt happen, and that was all she said. Soon enough, people will believe it never happened because they don't educate people on it. Great fucking plan.. idiots. I hate American school systems.

I blows my mind how there are people that deny that the holocuast took place, out of nothing more than sheer ignorance. These people don't want to believe that it took place, so they do just that. Anytime I encounter someone that deny's it's existence, I alway propose the question of "That what happened to the the nearly 6 Million jews that disappeared in the 1940's?"

And to not teach the crusades? The Crusades were the events that basically bridged the gap between the West and the East. The effects of the crusades were felt throughout Europe and Asia. Not just in Jerusalem. Trade began as a result, and many ideas and technology began to spread. Seriously without the crusades, the Renaissance probably wouldn't have happened when it did.

It all goes back to religion and the intolerences people have. The majority of our country lives with their heads up their asses. People are afraid of change or anything new.

Most of our country has been raised as christians since birth. They're heads flooded with "God's Word" in a book that wasn't even written by the original apostles of Jesus. I'm not here to suggest that Christianity is wrong or anything like that. But I'll take what I can get out of the bible and nothing more. In my experience, there is no reason and or evidence to let that book dominate my life to the point when I am denying scientific and historical evidence of things.

I don't see how so many people could deny it when there are thousands of survivors and documents to support the facts.

Also it wasn't just about Jewish people, it was an attempt to exterminate anyone different.... in my opinion it's important for everyone to know about hate crimes/genocides like this regardless of the race/culture that was persecuted...

Good comparison to the renaissance, it basically happen because the Crusades. If schools just leave shit out like this one thing (aside from the accomodation or antisemitism) that's going to happen is a large amount will have no idea how we got to different stages in history. People will start to wonder how Isreal showed up out of nowhere, unless they're the kind that denies it exists.

Lol if you're in denial that the Holocaust actually happend you should get the hell out of school.

This happened in the UK, not America. In high school i learned about the holocaust a number of times and the college i go to is having a holocaust memorial week next week.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - George Santayana

i took entire units on holocaust. we have a lady come in every year who is an actual survivor and tell us her story. i find it extremely interesting and i think that people are missing out on one of the biggest single events in history.

im not an overly worldy person, but inform me...why do muslims deny the holocaust? mental retardation?

this is like shit from a southpark episode when they get rid of christmas because it offended people hahahha

im ashamed to live in america.

Alot of the reason is they claim it to be a conspiracy, for jews to benefit from. They're convinced that the number (6million)is a far exageration of how many really died and was just made up for sympathy of the Jews. Also many white-supremacists and Jews (very orthodox ones who are mainly are against the state of Isreal) support that the Holocaust didn't happen.

my soc. class studied the holocaust for like two weeks, really in depth and the teachers didn't hide anything and told it how it should be.. we saw all these pictures and videos and shit, pretty disturbing

FUNNY ASS STORY

we were in class watching an old black and white film on the Nazis and the holocaust on a small little Tv and this kid in my class was like doing homework and not paying attention and my teacher was like "focus on the movie" and I was like "yea or were gunna have to send you to concentration camp"

I don't understand why people want to deny religious history, or certain major historic events in general. Evidently to just avoid controversy.

No, I know it's happening in the UK, but I just got angry at my school writing my post, so yah. That's why I said it, heh.

Muslims are Semetic, the same as jewish people, and for the most part, their religion, and the basis of that religion is very similar. The Muslim and jewish religion differ at the opinion of Jesus. Muslims include Jesus in the Qur'an, however, Muhammed is the prophet, and Allah is thier god, while the Jews believe in a Messiah, and that jesus existed, just he was not the son of god. Hope thats understandable

no, my Baba was forced into the Warsaw ghetto in 1943 by the Nazis, where she lived among others for enarly a year. Ever hear of the Warsaw rebellion? Yeah, like a ton of Poles, adn Jews collected weapons, and fought against the Nazis, however, many were killed. Not a funny story. My grandpa was in the RCAF, and helped to liberate a nazi death camp- different from a concentration camp. He has never spoken to anyone other than my baba about it...

Word, the way i see it, the 3 religions go in an order of prophets and beliefs and all stem fomr the same roots. Judaism-----> leads to Christianity-------> leads to Islam. All 3 believ in the same good they just have differnt rules about prophets and and how it all happened and many parts are based on the same scriptures.  Although to me Islam seems to have some of the more fucked up rules, but then so does christianity when you take it to an extreme. Either way knowledge is power, and we should learn all we can with an open mind.
