Third party flash

would anyone be able to suggest a 3rd party flash that would compare to a canon speedlite? i shoot with a 40D for reference.

check out the Vivitar 285HV. robust and powerful dedicated off cam flash for only $89. not the most gadgety... but worth it

is it worth the extreme large amounts of cash to go for a speedlite or will a 3rd party serve me ok? i mostly want it for sports, some portrait work etc.

also, i'm a n00b with flashes still, is the DF-383 from vivitar better than the already suggested vivitar?

yes the 383 is better. more options and what not for $40-50 more than the 285HV. don't know exact specs. just know that many photographers use the 285HV has a dedicated off cam flash cus it's a workhorse and very simple on full manual control.
