Things you'd like to see fixed in skiing.

Hey NS,I'm writing a paper for college and need help with a topic. We have to choose a topic in our field of interest (My major is Mechanical Engineering), and write a proposal then later a research paper on it.

I need help coming up with a problem in skiing today that you feel has been over looked or needs improving.

It could be:

ski design

lift layouts

safety concerns

Any thing that you would like to see improved. It also doesn't have to be skiing related, but I'd like for it to be along the lines of Engineering, or Physics.

boots that are safe and comfortable (already have full tilts btw)

lifts that are safe and fast

yea i know but could be "improved" IMO

they need to figure out how we can get the support skiers need with the comfort of snowboarders moon boots

and shit lifts can always be faster but that might be more extreme then actually skiing

Park ski durability. Now that's something that could be improved. Just having skis that can last longer than 2 seasons would be a miracle.

Lift ideas:

Teleporters- Never ending jump line

A lift that's also an inverted rollercoaster

Getting fitted with the proper boot makes a huge difference. I got brand new boots this year, great fit for my foot and got them fitted at my shop and they're as comfortable as a snowboard boot but are super supportive and responsive while skiing.

lifts where the rider has a throttle and controls the speed. then all the chairs are racing towards the top. you could blow by all the slow people, passing each other and shit. they all crash into the bullwheel at the top and several people get injured and the rest go on skiing.

wow that would be fun

disclaimer some shoddy science may have been used in this post

Better helmet liners maybe? Something a bit more forgiving than freaking Styrofoam. I'm not up to date with the latest product by any means but I saw a snowboarder flash the inside of his helmet after a pipe run at X & it closely resembled the lining to my old football helmet.

yea i got my FTs fitted a few years ago and before then i thought boots were always gonna hurt. My new boots help BIG TIME but i cant say after a full day of skiing my feet dont hurt a bit. Ive broken parts of my feet numerous times though so maybe thats it. Or i need custom footbeds

I'm convinced evan will have an opinion on pretty much everything..

I'd say more thorough / improved medical facilities on the hill, if this sport really is going to hell I bet a bunch of peoples arms, legs, knees and heads are going with it

Magical metal edges that carve through ice as well as a race ski, but slides rails/boxes perfectly without catching.

I'll pay $5,000 for said magic metal.

Avalanches. Either a more effective controlled trigger system or more advanced safety gear.

It's the only thing wrong with the sport.

Helmets. They've been the same for far too long. If they are going to push their use more, than more should be spent on R&D to make newer technology for helmets.

This is not possible. Yes getting fitted boots will make your feet comfortable and you should do it, but they are not nearly as great as snowboard boots. Snowboard boots feel like shoes, they are soft, warm, and you can actually walk up and down stairs in them without dying.

Snowboard boots > Ski boots

I walk up and down stairs every day I go skiing, all in my ski boots. Am i jesus or something?

Thanks for the input guys! I think I'm gonna go with either avalanche safety, improved medical facilities or improved helmets. I would do the skis, with edge durability but only being a year into college I don't have enough technical knowledge to write a 10 page paper on it.

Has anyone heard of the Airbag Helmet? How many of you would wear something like this, if made for skiers? Go to 3:00 for the helmet in action.

Thanks for the help guys!

Rossignol factory tuning.Environmental sustainability (could be easy points)

As far as airbag helmets, I wouldn't wear one. It's activated by sparratic movements. I could see this being a problem.

Also, for helmets, may be cool to incorporate isoBlox into your project.

and what the dude said about edges that hold an edge like race skis but behave like theyre rounded on rails

We'd be deploying those things every ten minutes lol I don't know about you guys but I fall a lot but rarely actually hit my head, but when I do even with a helmet on I still get a pretty solid headache.

I think something like the technology used on the interior of the latest Revo or DNA football helmets would be pretty legit. if you look at the tests they've done on the Riddell Revolution 360 they reduce concussions at some crazy percentage. If there was a ski helmet with similar foam/gel lining it would seem much more forgiving than hard Styrofoam. May become a bit more pricey but I'd be willing to pay to keep my head protected and comfortable.

I have no idea how this would work, but we need someting to control the speed when we're skiing naked! I mean look at all those clips of naked people. There's always somboby sendin it straight to gucci!

Ski boots where I don't always have to put on the boot sole protectors, which are hard to put on, expensive and bulky to keep in my pocket.

Most people don't use those and it means their bindings have less hold because the boots are worn down.
