There should be a sticky'd thread on tips and how-to's for making a good edit

I have seen the threads made a million times where somebody is asking how to "make an edit" so I think it would be beneficial if there was a sticky'd thread for editing tips and whatnot.

Maybe this is just another stupid thread but i think it would be a big help for the many people on here who are starting to throw together edits.

Discuss..

This thread could be it, but lets get the ball rolling first.

Maybe we could keep it organized. Like first we get like 1/2 - 1 page of "Shooting" Then another page of "importang/transocding" then like "adding effects and titles" then "exporting and upoading."

I think thatd make for a really helpful thread.

I don't think there really any "how to's" for making a good edit. In my opinion half of it is good filming and the other half is experience, because as you make more and more edits you'll get more comfortable in your program and you'll develop a good feel for what works and what doesn't.

This is true. But for people starting out, it might be helpful to have one thread to refer to for info on stuff like what codecs to use, how to transcode footage, how to set up your timeline to match your settings, tips and tricks on how to set up good shots, etc. Of course there is always the searchbar/Google for that stuff too. But regardless , I'll start this thread off with a helpful video from Vimeo Video School:

I agree. Today there are so many different codecs and formats for different cameras, it sucks and is definitely the part I (used to) struggle with.

This sounds like a bad idea kinda. People learn from experience and people edit differently, too. As far as importing and all that goes google is your friend.

Except for when every tutorial or peice of info is based on a combination of Mpeg stream clip, and the FCP suite which is completely different from the adobe suite

There is no manual for making videos. Otherwise every video would look the same. Part of filming is being creative with angles, audio, skiing, and editing style.

However, I think it would be a good idea to have a place for people to leave pointers and they're favorite vimeo video school tutorials.

Cheack out videocopilot.net loqads of tutorails on video production. Its all adobe but the principles are the same whatever software you use. Tons of information on formats, inporting and exporting the things you need to know. No editting tutorials but once you understand teh basics editing will become much easier. Much better forum there too to ask for advice.

i feel like this is something that couldn't really be put into a single thread. there are so many aspects to a good edit, it'd be hard to do. that and good editing isn't even necessarily something that can be taught.

I have gotten where I am in editing be listening and learning. I've been through countless NS threads and watched so many videos. It's kind of a journey you have to take yourself the answers can't just be handed to you. If editing was easy stuff then it wouldn't be fun.

MAJOR EMPHASIS ON THIS. This is what sets people apart from others. This is what sets apart amateurs and pros. If we had a thread like this, some of our secrets would be revealed, and personally, I wouldn't want that to happen.

And also, contradicting what Evan said, how could you arrange a thread like that? I mean, what if someone had something to add to the thread after it's all done? It would just end up being a mess.

You can go on google and find many tips for editing and such, not all of your information needs to be found on Newschoolers.

Quote for emphasis. I never got why kids come on here and make thread to ask the simplest questions. You are going to find answers a HELL of a lot faster on something like DVXuser or just using Google.
