Theft of service

I've never really heard of anyone having to pay a theft of service here in Utah. I think Snowbird you have the highest chance of being caught. I know Canyons/PC questions people on passes but I myself have never been questioned about the legitimacy of my pass. Based on how the lifties are at each resort (I've been to all but Solitude) I'd find it very odd that anyone got called out for borrowing a pass.

Odds are you'll be told to leave the way you came and that's about it.

It varies resort to resort. Depending on the situation, how it plays out, and how they feel about you it could be very lenient to extremely strict. The worst would be if they decide to lay it all on and make an example out of you.

I was caught in WA once and after a bit of a run-around they took my friend's pass, and I think I got a fine too. We were both banned from the mountain until I paid the fine. I forget how much it was. Apparently they can charge you with some identity theft charges if they really want to.

It depends on how you react to them - if you're a dick about it, they'll be a dick back. If you own up to it and confess, you'll probably get off with a warning.

nah im pretty sure they have a protocol. does anyone know what the fine is if you get caught?

RFID passes come with a fume or pass reader which pulls up your pass picture. Solitude has but doesn't use a lot. Many resorts pay klifties bonuses for catchin scammers. Imo the easiest place to poach

Deer Vallet, they train them lifties to be nonconfrentational ;)

This is actually true. DV doesn't pay/provide any additional compensation for lifties to snag passes. Consequently if there's some doubt, they tend to look the other way in lieu of causing a shitstorm. Canyons, on the other hand, is the opposite- $50 for every pulled pass and some of them really get after it. Not sure about PCMR. IIRC I think Canyons makes you initial next to a line when you buy your season pass that loaning it to a friend/getting caught with someone elses can result in a $300 fine.

my pal got picked off at pc a few years back. The lift op grabbed the pass...he claimed he must have grabbed his brothers by accident. he left - no fine. Not sure if the protocol has changed

Its around $700 all said and done if they charge you. My friend last year made his own brighton pass on an old blank subway card and got caught. He got a C misdemeaner, theft of services and trespassing ticket all adding up to about $700.

I wouldn't try it at snowbird, my buddy pulled out of the lift line and interrogated in some office when he got a hair cut and they thought it wasn't his pass...

RFID has actually increased the chance of them catching you as now your picture is on their scanner, so it's much larger.

I got busted clipping tix at Brighton and was merely pulled out of line, chewed out and told not to come back. But I remember PC always making a bigger deal out of it and paying lifties.

how much does them having your picture help when you're in full ski gear? i'd imagine a helmet, goggs, mask and huge clothes would make it pretty tough to actually match you with a picture.

i haven't seen em do shit at pc. at least in the park lift. no one really cares. i rode up with a dude who used his wife's pass and it worked

right... but how would they even be suspicious is my question... my pass has a headshot and that's it. they don't even have height/weight on them.

I didn't read everything above, but I got caught at Brighton a few years. ago. Sucks!! When I was caught in high school it just cost $50 or so to get it back. If you are 18 or older, DO NOT GET CAUGHT. I have a Class B Misdemeanor for theft of services now. It cost about $500 and I had to go to an all day theft class. Yeah all that sucks there, but the real problem is when you are trying to apply for jobs. I wasn't able to get my real estate license for a while because of it. I am not allowed in Canada because of it (sucks when you find out at the boarder).

Moral of the story, if you are over eighteen, you are screwed. Do whatever you can to buy off the liftie. It's not worth it. Trust me, I know from experience.

And if you do go to court, get a plea in abeyance. I wish I had known that.

my brothers pass got taken at alta when my buddy was using it and all they did was took it and said that my brother could come pick it up
