The Younger Generation is failing skiing.

there's a difference between a lack of park etiquette and simply not being able to ski. people who can't control themselves should stay the fuck away from the park but if they can then it doesn't matter whether their technique is perfect or not.

Park etiquette has nothing to do with skill level. Some of the poorest technical skiers I see are the ones making the biggest effort to call drops, ensure no one is coming in behind them, and get clear of landings. That's good etiquette. It's thoughtfulness and caring beyond oneself.

If you're an out of control skier, that's something completely different, and maybe speaks more to the skiing code than it does the park code. If you're flying down hills and risking not only your own safety but that of those around you, then yeah, there's a problem, but I don't think that's what's being argued here. Besides, the same problem would exist if those same kids were skiing outside the park working on their carving in a similarly reckless manner.

I don't think this point holds, at least based on the argument you've made.

park etiquette goes way beyond calling your drops, but whatever. i actually think calling your drop is pointless and just begs for others to snake you.

but it's fine, none of you people agree with me. all i wanted to say is that people should learn how the fuck to ski before skiing in the park. i'm done.

Oh stahp don't be done!

I never said park etiquette was only calling drops; I said it was an overall thoughtfulness for others around you. Tell me what park etiquette is for you?

okay for all you shits saying you don't need good form to ski park, well you obviously are terrible and consistently crash and/or land backseat. try popping when you go off jumps and try not spotting your landing and you will not land right. you need proper form to land and execute the trick correctly. for example, try skiing pipe without proper form. eat shit all you dip shit "gangster" skiers.

Didn't read any of this thread.

But it is super funny when you see all the little 13 year old part rats trying to ski park when there is 1+ feet of fresh pow on the ground. Just makes me chuckle. Silly kids. One day they will understand.

The younger generation is failing skiing, but not because they would rather ski park than big mountain or race or ski trees and pow. Many younger park skiers are bringing the same elitist attitude into the park that used to be reserved to racers.A lot of people are starting to ski not because they grew up skiing or found out how fun it is but because with the xgames and now the olympics freeskiing's the new "cool" thing to do, and these skiers primarily ski in the park. This new wave of skiers are focused on progressing and becoming just like tammy walnuts or bobby brown instead of skiing with their bros and having fun. You know the assholes in the park who laugh at anyone starting out or just taking mellow laps? Those people aren't skiing for fun, they're skiing because they want to fit into a certain image.

This definitely isn't true for everyone who's starting to ski or who skis park, but this group is growing quickly.

Yeah dude we dont really see this out here in Tahoe, its either tourists or groms that have been shredding from the day they popped out of their mom tummy. Take Aspen for example.

It's out here to some extent but it seems heavily magnified on the est because the terrain is so limited.

GYou could have made this argument 5 years ago, 10 years ago or even 15 when all the madness started with the new Canadian airforce. I like yes it happens, however, somewhere along their ski career someone pull them aside or tell them what's up. I'm curious as to how are thread creator it. Here in summit county Colorado many kids have the opportunity to be brought up in many structured recreational programs for skiing and they are not as intense as racing. Kids today if anything are only going to become more incredible and progress faster because of how organized freeskiing is. Do you honestly think a 14 year old learning a dub cork cannot ski outside of the park?

yep hahha

Last week we had one of the biggest pow days I've seen in 8+years skiing on the eastcoast.

30inches of fresh snow approximatly , anyway I was cutting across the park to get to another trail and I see about 35 persons just cruising the park and like 10 guys filming and hiking a downrail haha

Around Summit County I can never tell if the typical park rat is any good because I never actually see them skiing outside of the park. I can ski a whole entire day all over the mountain and not see a single park rat looking kid, but then I go into the park and boom, there's 100s of them. Its like they wouldn't know what to ski without it. Though sometimes I am jealous of park rats that can bust out smooth cork 9s, or 7s, or whatever over 60fters, but then when I'm standing above a perfect pillow line or steep chute, I just don't give a shit. Its a trade off and I will always take the latter.

I totally agree. I have been skiing since I was about 2 years old, and I actually "learned" to ski. I rarely ever ski park and my park tricks are limited, but I can do things well enough to not look like a total noob due to my ability to ski. So i think it is totally bizarre for some kid to have never skied, and all of a sudden want to become the next Tom Wallisch because they saw a cool segment or something. But Hey! at least they aren't snowboarding

The group of skiers who are the most annoying are people who have been skiing for a long time and still suck. And you watch them from the lift drop into shit you want to hit and scrape it.

I guess if someone is gonna turn out like this its best they stay in the park, right?

I work at T&L in Ottawa and every time a kid comes in and asks for a center mount i just want to slap them.

Kid: "Yeh i ski mostly park".

Me: "NO YOU DON'T!!!!!! You go to your local ski hill and ski through the park like your hot shit or something and wreck the kickers and block the rails. And then when you go on your family ski trips you realize you shouldn't have gotten a park set-up because you spend most of your time elsewhere on the mountain anyway!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!"

That was much needed ventilattion.

Stratton vt today 18 inches of fresh.....literally SO many park rats who arent even good at park in the first place flailing around skiing like absolute trash. Great you can throw a decent 5 but you can't ski for shit outside the park.

This is so true. 3 kids i know are just starting out skiing and i already see them just staying the park.

this may have been said as I don't have the patience to read through 6 pages, but i think the kids are failing themselves more than skiing. Just making it harder for themselves to progress as a well-rounded skier. There are basic skiing skills that need to be utilized in the park that i don't see as often anymore.

chill your tits everybody. those 10-15 year olds that pick up skis for their birthday or christmas and spend their first day ever skiing in the park, they're there because our sport is getting more exposure. it's becoming more popular, there are bound to be kids like that. those kids are also the ones who will pump money into our sports economy, helping out the companies we love and support.

you want to know how younger kids are failing at skiing? they aren't. everybody is. and everyone is failing at skiing because they make threads like this, we shit on younger kids out of jealousy and over-confidence. grow up. who gives a fuck if they're in the park skiing. who gives a shit if some gaper goes off the lips of the rails you're trying to k-fed. THEY JUST WANT TO ENJOY THE SAME THRILL WE ALL DO.

get over yourself, go out tomorrow, hit the rails you want, shred some jumps, or go outside the park and carve up some groomers. before you yell at some gaper, cut off some slow old man, or get angry about kids who can't carve yet are slaying the park, remember this, the reason that gaper is out there, the reason that man is skiing at age 60-whatever, the reason that kid is hucking his body into the air off jumps, is because THEY ALL LOVE SKIING, JUST LIKE YOU AND I DO. mind your own business, learn at your own pace, encourage strangers/kids you see around the hill, and share the stoke instead of fueling the jealousy for a change.

Yeah I'm definitely seeing this start to happen. On an east coast powder day (which are so rare its sad) you will not find me anywhere near a park. And I always make sure I take a few regular runs so I don't lose my skills.

I don't want to shout out names in here, but I've recently noticed more and more kids in my town starting to ski. They don't know how to ski groomers, pow, steeps, moguls, they make backyard setups and learn how to hit rails. It's pretty funny, but at the same time I try not to worry about it because it doesn't really concern me.

why do you people care. it effects me in no way what so ever. But those kids who suck at skiing and buy nice freestyle type gear are just helping support the industry.

And if a kid is a good enough park skier he will eventually become good at the other aspects of skiing.

The only thing i hate about skiing is people that act like dicks and just think they are the shit. It makes those kids learning not wanna try new things. I dunno just think skiing should just be about fun and if park is fun for you well cool, to many people worry about what everyone else is doing or how they look. It's skiing not junior high......

Agree with the first park, dont agree with the second part. I think this thread is saying dont forget to learn skiing first off. Park is nothing without learning the basics and having appreciation for the actual sport of skiing.

I totally agree but not all kids are like this, there is hope! for example I am a 15 year old park skier who's been skiing since age 2 and I have 4 years of racing and 3 years of moguls under my belt and now I'm in the park. All of these little shits will never get anywhere in skiing so all they really are are an annoying ruts in the real freeskiing community.

It's not so much what they do that annoys me, i'm fine with kids coming and skiing park when they first get on the mountain, but it's their attitude when they do it. They get a pair of twin tips, ride a box and call themselves a skier. They think they're the shit because they can spin faster or get the grab, and often they think that their style of skiing is the best style and have zero respect for the skiers in the backcountry and the deep stuff in the trees. If they can do both well, then good for them and you could be a little hotheaded, but nothing pisses me off more than a cocky park rat who can't make a turn.

So many of you guys suck. Unless this younger generation is a threat to your safety or is made up of genuine assholes, why does it matter if they can't link "proper" turns? I thought freeskiing was supposed to be different from racing because we reject the idea of proper form? Personal style/expression extends beyond just how you look for the couple seconds you're on a rail or in the air, and beyond your outerwear choices. I personally don't think I'd ever want form like a racer, it's just not for me.

Bishop's right. We need to be more supportive. If you notice one of these beginners there's nothing wrong with offering to take a lap, or giving a couple pointers. Or just accept that they're doing what they enjoy and don't bother bitching about it. There's nothing to be gained by elitism.

Finally got out of the yard jibs and on the hill for the first time with some family so I only had time for a few park laps and frick, I feel like these past few months of yard skiing have made me a better all around skier. I have no idea how but I wen't out and was just absolutely railing nice carve turns. They felt super locked on.

When I started out in skiing though there wasn't really a good park and I was too much of a pussy so I had lots of time to learn how to 'ski properly' Glad I was stuck on groomers looking back at it now, I feel like my skiing is just super solid everywhere and I feel like that has made my park skiing click this year really well.

Personally I feel people should get a pretty good grip on skiing before they venture into the park. Learn how to angulate, pole plant & the likes. But that's just my opinion... and that shouldn't have an effect on what people do. If kids wanna hit the bunny hill and then jump straight to the park... sure, whatever floats your boat.

I agree that it's annoying but if they're having fun doing what there doing who cares as long as they don't get in our way

The only thing that pisses me off about kids who cant ski but go to park is when they have a GoPro and completely abuse the park etiquette. I'm not that good at all but I know my limits and respect the kids who are putting on a show.

I don't see it as a problem out west. I see these kids occasionally but more of the kids who ski out west come from a back ground of skiing

.this

out west there are a ton more ski bum/ski background parents that teach their kids how to really ski. I don't hit up park city as much anymore, so i cant really speak for how it is there
