Wow.. i never thought i would contribute to a poles/no poles thread, but here goes.. I'm meant to be writing notes for uni so this beats that...First off the videos are sick, Allen is doing shit none of you can do so regardless of your opinion on him, his "rollerblading tricks" and his style, that deserves respect. Mathieu's video is straight up sick. He uses poles half of the time and none half of the time. That is really the point. Its just a preference. Why is there so much hate? - A guy a few posts back argued that if you want to ski 'how it is meant to be done' then you have to use poles.. This is obviously bullshit.. How are Pep, Pollard, Benchetler, Mahre not skiing 'how skiing is meant to be'. They are killing pillow lines, drops and big mountains with no poles. And they make it look good.- Allen is right, if he had tried half his shit with poles he would have killed himself. Its safer (in my opinion) to learn new tricks without poles, even though the poles obviously help with balance and improve most peoples style. Personally, I use poles about half the time, but sometimes I don't bother with them. I feel more comfortable trying new stuff on rails and jumps without, but I would never hit a big line without them. When I go to the backcountry I always take poles and then sometimes I will hit a kicker or a drop without them, especially if I'm doing hand drags. Its just a preference, and its not either or.. You can do both, sometimes with poles, sometimes without. No hate, just skiing.
