The Vatican creates a new sin for a new century!

The Vatican has unveiled some new sins for the 21st Century, such as genetic manipulation, pollution and social injustice.

Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti, the Vatican's number-two official for sins and penance, told L'Osservatore Romano that he saw bioethics as posing the greatest risks for the human soul.

"(Within bioethics) there are areas where we absolutely must denounce some violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments and genetic manipulation whose outcome is difficult to predict and control," he told the Vatican's official newspaper on Sunday in an interview headlined "New Forms of Social Sin."

The Roman Catholic Church has previously spoken out against stem cell research that requires the destruction of human embryos, believing that life begins at conception.

Girotti also attacked drugs, saying they "weaken the mind and obscure intelligence."

On the growing gap between rich and poor, he said it causes "an unbearable social injustice."

Pope Benedict has made several strong statements on the environment in recent months, saying problems like climate change had become critical to humanity's future.

Catholicism has two basic types of sin: Venial, which are relatively less important and forgivable, and mortal. Those can include acts like abortion and murder, although the church doesn't keep a well-defined list.

Mortal sins can cause a person to go to Hell unless confessed to a priest, who then absolves the sinner in God's name.

Another reason why I stopped going to church...

I think it's pretty safe to say that churches these days have gone so far of the path of religion that it's scary. I feel sorry for those who were had religion forced upon them at a young age that by the time they could think for themselves, they were already brainwashed.

Thats just how the catholic church is. According to them the pope can do basically what ever he wants becuase he is "ordained by god himself". I go to church, but i'm not catholic adn the catholic church creeps me out, "religion" creeps me out. I believe and i'm proud of it, but i'm not proud of religion.

Even if you disagree with what the church is trying to say, do you really think that its a bad institution for saying it? honestly?

honestly, yes. they have their code in the bible. having a human Change the rules of the religion is fundamentally against that religion, which in result is a blasphemy. This church is crossing its own rules, and as a result I expect it to become corrupt....again.

so honestly, I believe it is a bad institution for saying that.

How about their policy: food for religion in poor countries. These people are so disconnected from the real world its almost scary. The Vatican talks and talks but yet have no solution for anything. Praying to god will change nothing.

We're probably going to create some humanoid monsters through genetic manipulation this century. The vatican will too.

I just want to see an animal (preferably human) with the photosynthetic mechanism fully functional in hair or skin. Just a few added genes, stick some chloroplasts in the original embryo, and PRESTO. That would be baller.

Honestly you have no idea what your talking about. He is the Vicar of Christ and Gods representative. So yeah he can. And why do expect it to become corrupt and how will this make it corrupt. You also are cracking me up.

Despite being an atheist I do recognize the church as a good influence on a huge number of people. It tries to guide people onto a virtuous path in the way they believe is best. If they didn't change with the times they couldn't effectively do this. Whether or not their teachings is for you is your own choice, but how can you say changing the rules to the religion is blasphemy? The ultra-strict adherence to rules that people cant relate to is what is pushing people away from the church~

Both my parents are catholic,, but the way i see i dont need someone else to tell me what morals are and how to interpret the bible.. sometimes i think priest are good if you need someone to talk to about an ethical problem, but in my eyes in no way does the pope have any authority on the last word.. ultimetaly only yourself can decide whether something is ethical,, lets just hope you have some idea about whats good and whats not..

if your not catholic, why do you care? why even post this? so everyone can bash religion? the whole site is just one big bashing pit. people talk about why cant everyone just love eachother. meanwhile a lot of you athiest are bashing us catholics. don't fucking worry about it.

i saw this on the news and i cant understand why they interview non catholic people like it makes any difference to catholics what atiest think. just leave it alone.

good point, BUT its still a little crazy, kinda the same reason republicans bash democrats, your way of life actually does effect people who are not catholic.

if you're not a stem cell researcher why do you care? Like it makes any difference to athiests what a bunch of brainwashed catholics think.

HAHAHAH take a quik look at this kids profile, there is more than one reference to smoking weed, one of the sins, DONT SMOKE DOPE! "illegal drugs weaken the mind"

its more of like the church doesn;t want their followers to support or join in stem cell research. if your a non-believer, nothing they can do, obviously.

would you like me to explain my life story beginning with being born, baptized, going to sunday school, falling asleep in church, realizing the entire church contradicts itself on a daily basis and ending with me believing the church does more wrong than good? Idiot

Thats funny, I went through that exact cycle myself. Only took me 10-12 years to get through the whole thing, it was wierd.

I think that questioning authority and a healthy dose of cynicism is essential to any form of morality, so no, I don't believe that the catholic church does a very good job of guiding people to leading more moral lives. If they are so worried about the damage drugs do to the brain, why do they then discourage the use of it.

Also, for those who don't believe the catholic church is at all corrupt, do you have any idea the amount of wealth that it sits on? You would think an institution that supposedly values life so highly that it is so fervently against stem cell research would consider using a portion of that wealth to lessen the suffering in the world.

he's voted in by humans, not a diety. therefore theres room for corruption.

if you would read a little history, the church has been affiliated with wars (crusades), corruption (bonds people bought to save their souls, priests molesting children, etc.) if you want some more I would suggest going to wikipedia...

Church officials could hold considerable political power, often serving as advisors to kings. Feudal lords who rebelled risked excommunication a severe penalty that facilitated peace.

Pope Urban II launched the First Crusade in 1095

I would say starting a war counts as corruption.

In 1869–70, the First Vatican Council affirmed the doctrine of papal infallibility.[187] This doctrine states that when a pope "speaks ... as the pastor and teacher of all Christians ... defining ... a doctrine concerning faith and morals to be held by the whole Church", he "is possessed of that infallibility with which the Divine Redeemer wished for his Church to be endowed ..."[188] This does not mean that the pope is always infallible or even that all his teachings are infallible, but only applies to certain specifically defined pronouncements

Right there. they even state that the pope can make mistakes.

but i'll stop going on. honestly I think you just dont want to hear any other sides of the argument but your own

dude, catholics arent "brainwashed." when you go to get confirmed in grade 8, its your choice wether or not you do it. they wait till grade 8 for it so that you are old enough to make the choice for yourself.

im no perfect christian, but i do beleive that it has taught me good values. and what is wrong with giving people something to beleive in. (whether it is true, or false)

what do you tell your 4 year old kid when his cat dies. that the cat is in heaven, or that its just dead.

maybe if you introduced the religion in 8th grade, but that's never the case. Most are brainwashed since they were a toddler. You contradict yourself with every sentince you type.

im all for making the religious think they're going to hell for polluting. that'd be such an easy fix to a large population of polluting idiots. go for it mr. pope!

what a total fucking crock of shit. drugs impair human intelligence? in some cases, obviously, but i couldnt live without my chronic, and ill be damned if i dont feel a little more engaged in my schoolwork if im a little lifted. plus, wasnt it the tree of knowledge adam and eve were banned from eating from? theres plants that give knowledge, and apparently ones that take it away, and the fucking church says we cant have either. fuck you and your crazy hats.

I think its sad that the pope came out and anounced new sins. That is contradicting to what the bible teachs. The bible says that nothing needs to be added or omited from it. When you know God, and have a relationship with him, he is in your heart and you will know what is right from wrong. I know that it is wrong to polute; my heart tells me that because Jesus is in my heart. The bible also teachs us that the only way to heaven is to accept Jesus and realize that he died for all our sins. He didnt die for certain sins, he died for all our sins. In other words his death took the place of our sins so that we could go to heaven. This meens that you can confess all the sins you want to a priest and it wont change anything. You must confess to God yourself to be forgiven.
