tim...i have to disagree, big time, with you. anyone, even from an unbiased source, can tell you that americans are the most skilled troops in the world. that can be undoubtably proven with numberstraining costs/time periods/equipment etc... highly trained troops are obviously going to have the upper hand, 9 times out of 10, in just about every situation they are faced with. your analysis of vietnam is very wrong. even during that conflict we had troops with more skill than any other combat group in the world. you have to understand that vietnam was a loss due to horrible policy which resulted in attrition like strategies. we were more worried about being politically correct at this time than we were about the lives of our troops...hence the discontent seen in america at the time. all of the 'bring our troops home' displays were a direct result of this as people saw that americas were not fighting the war in a strategically successful manner. american troops are the best troops in the world, BUT american troops dont make policy. they are the instruments of policy. just as most all other troops are. guerillas didnt win because they were more skilled. they were less skilled and they had low tech weapons, but they were able to fight successfully because they had smart policy, whether their own or higher officials is irrelevant, which was appropriate given the environment. thats why we failed. VERY similar to what Bush pulled in mogadishu. poor policy caused the failure. not poorly skilled troops.
