i have met plenty of red blooded americans that think the US is going to dominate the worlds daily agenda for all of eternity. for all of you i have this to say:

the united states position as the worlds most dominant superpower will come to an end within our lifetime. china will be taking over that position. while china may be communist, it is supported by a market share economy that is progressing hastily and they have the population to back it - over a billion people - something that america simply cannot compete with.

as for ronald mcbush's effective foreign policy? mutually assured destruction should take care of that.

as much as I hate Bush and all the shit the US has done China is not fuckin taking over. they have no resources, and if you say hi-tech / engineering jobs most of the billion or so people are poorly educated also most of china is in hospitable to growing crops and such which would be vital, also the cities have some of the worst pollution problems in the world. Actually, yes, China is taking over, and what do you mean it has no natural resources, it has plenty, and perhaps it's greatest rescource? people! To say they have no resources is pure ignorance. The United States economy will crumble within 10-15 years as the rest of the world wakes up and realises, hold on, we don't have to produce for America. The USA has enormous trade deficit and that's what's gonna root ya, besides the fact that you're power trippin' and trying to take over the world. And the funny thing? SOCIAL PROBLEMS: Social problems, like large un-employed workers from old state owned industries and farmers who are missing out on the improvements in the economy. Combine this with lots of environmental pollution and HONG-KONG demanding to stay free. ATTACK TAIWAN: Mainland China attacks TAIWAN, after TAIWAN declared indepdence, and the world embargoes Mainland China. Sony doesnt make you a super power, ha!

I don't think China will be able to indulge itself in the world economy just yet. One of the main reasons Western countries haven't outsourced jobs with China or just higher form of business in general is that they have a very low skill level in western languages. That's the reason you see India growing at such an alarming rate is that you have very educated people with a high level of the English, and other Western languages.

America is slipping, but the main thing that will keep them in top spot is there high-tech, high powered military. Nobody else in the world can compete with that. However, as all world powers of the past have fallen, America will too, and China will most likely fill that role someday.

 
The US may no longer be the sole world superpower, but its doubtful that it would become a minor power.

China population, which above is cited as one of their strengths and a major reason as to why they will alledgedly take over, is not a strength but a deficit. There are too many people in china to be completely unified under the government; this only leads to factionalization. That in turn further separates the people into groups, so they won't ever get anything done effectively.

On this issue of the US: I agree that the US is facing some tough issues concerning its position as the sole world superpower. But thats not to say that it is going to be replaced. The US is way too strong of a power and is too militarily advanced to be replaced as the lone superpower. China may have more people and a larger army, but no army is as technologically advanced as the US Army.

Furthermore, don't be so ignorant yourself to say that most Americans are 'pig-headed and arrogant' (PhattTim). Thats just about as hypocritical as you can be. Not every American fits your stereotype; some of us (many) are aware of what is happening in terms of foriegn policy.

China may have resources, but nothe amount to support the over 1 billion people there. And, PhattTim, to call 'people' the greatest resource is ignorant. People require vast amounts of many resources to be productive that China doesn't solely have, although they do have a lot. Another reason China wouldn't take if is the issue of stability. That is plain and simple, and doesn't exactly require explination. The military there is funded very well, their experience is low, and does not meet the forces of the UN, especially in the air.

the best part is that the US has the option of changing its leader every 4 years, so it keeps change happening. This, with the power of our World Leading Military, will single-handedly control our own destiny for a long time. Just look at the way we have overcome adversity in under 5 years. China is definitely going to become a force in world politics within our lifetimes. Whether it will be a dominating force is much harder to discern.

While they are definitely succeeding in obtaining industrial labor from fully industrialized (a term which i use knowing its not really representative) nations such as the US and Canada it lacks both the petroleum and natural mineral deposits necessary to really compete in a global market free of the WTO, IMF, and World Bank (which it will need to do to challenge our preeminence, a difficult task when we control 51% of both the IMF and World Bank).

India also has a shot at becoming a powerful nation because of it's rapid population growth and growing technical market. However, India's power is going to be in threatening the remainder of the world with overpopulation, not with its military or economic superiority.

I think that in the next twenty years we're going to see the global market change significantly, but not to the drastic extent some prophets have foreseen on this thread. America is going to fully realize its status as a post-industrial society, while countries such as China and India are going to step up as industrial powers.

Where that leaves us is going to depend heavily on foreign relations and on our ability to protect small businesses in America. Right now I don't think we can predict when the 'fall' of the US 'empire' will occur.

when i went to NZ they told me and my friends that max stay in the country is 3 months and then you have to leave...how does it work if you want to have a residency there?

most countries are like that you can get a 3 to 6 month work visa... then you have to eather mary someone from over there or get a 'real' job there that will work the the Gov to get a extended work visa or full residance.... thats going to be the shits when i want to move up to whistler for a year after college

Many of you have a scarily outdated view of the world. N. America and Europe have 1 big problem: The boomers fucked us. Our society is 'saturated' in debt and consumer products. Everyone has a car, everyone has a house and evryone has a TV and the other things that make life here good. If you want to sell anything here, you need to deal with cuthroat marketing and extremely skillful business tactics. The market is too tough here, a developing market is much easier to sell shit in and foreign countries are just starting to get where they need to be. Furthermore, we may the best standard of living, but banks in an effort to keep the economy going, have allowed personal and national debt to go through the roof, at a time when a huge slice of the population is set to retire. That bill will have to paid sometime, and its us thats going to have to do it. And the real kicker is: the current people running the government and businesses that got us into this will be sipping margatitas when the reset button finally gets pushed.

Developing nations, on the other hand, like China and India have caught up. Their education and manufacturing sectors are every bit as good as ours. They are small comparitively, but growing fast. The thing is, a Chinese or Indian engineer will work for a fraction of what someone here would. To make a real world example, where are Lines bindings made? Where did K2 move its production to?? CHINA. Where they can make shit for peanuts. PLus, with all the new factory jobs, workers in those countries both skilled and unskilled have the money to buy things they couldn't before, cars, homes, tvs, its got all the makings of a boom. it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see which market has the most potential.

The only reason domestic economies have been growing lately is because everything has been put on credit. China and India are 100 years behind, but thats a good thing, it will be an Industrial revolution all over again and they have a good 100 years of growth to look forward to before they are in the same boat we are. Thank your parents and grandparents for that.
