What has been inspiring me to do it is this article right here:
http://www.addicted2light.com/2012/...non-5d-mark-ii-vs-drum-scanner-vs-epson-v700/

If i was to do it right it would be more costly than a v700 but the scans look better and I've heard flatbeds are an utter pain in the ass.

The difference between the V700 and 5D should not be that great, and that must be a lousy bloody drum scan.

Also scanning film in any way shape or form is not easy, plug & play it's not, I've seen equally amazing results with either a flatbed, dedicated or camera but the common theme was that in all cases the users spend eons perfecting the technique.

It's especially difficult with colour film. I just get that done at a lab because I can't be fucked to deal with getting the colours right anymore...

monochrome isn't too hard to do, though. hence why I'm always busy making Pulitzers with tri-x pushed to 6400 for more artz

I'm looking at picking up a Helios 44 variant, which version should I be looking at mainly to pair with my 70D but I'm also am hoping to pick up film a little more seriously, so keep that in mind when suggesting which version to get.

I don't know anything about vintage lenses, can someone explain to me the difference with preset lenses, auto aperture and manual aperture?

I hear the 44-2 and 44m-3 are said to produce the best bokeh which is what I'm after

The 44-2 is the easiest to find, the 44m-3 and 44m-6 are the only one's I've used and both are great.

And any Input into the preset, manual and auto aperture versions?

Honestly I don't even really know. M42 lenses all seem the same to me, just a focus ring, clicked aperture ring, and the little tab in the back that the camera mechanically pushes on to close the diaphragm.

On video it doesn't really matter, and unless you have something like a Chinon CE3 that has auto exposure, I don't see where you'd need to worry about such things.

Do my dslr will be able to mechanically close the diaphragm?

Stay away from auto-aperture because you will only be able to shoot wide-open because:

Laurens knows best, as usual...

Do you, or anyone else have experience with other Russian lenses? I'm also looking at the Jupiter 9

I've only used the Jupiter 3 and the Jupiter 11. Both were awesome, if not remarkable as hell.

I have know people who have the Jupiter 9... If I ever pick up a working M42 camera I'm definitely getting one. Pretty incredible to pick up an 85mm f2 for 100ish.

How would you compare the Jupiter 3 to the helios 44?

Possibly better, possibly not, with any Soviet lens there is a great uncertainty, call it Russian Roulette for pun-sake, these lenses were made by a variety of different factories with little to no quality control, some lenses are truly gems, others are worse then stale rotting manure.

Besides the Jupiter 3 is only available in M39 and Kiev Contax and will not fit a FD-mount even with adapter due to flange focal distance.

Most lenses of uncertain quality are cheap, I have four Helios', one is complete crap, two are decent and one is amazing, if you want to make sure you get quality you'll have to look into the more established manual lenses but those will come at an absolute premium.
