The truth about GAS PRICES !!!

exactly. oil companies pretty much run the world's economy, so when someone designs a highly fuel-efficient car, the oil companies buy them out. it doesn't just come down to gas either. if cars were made to last longer and fewer were made, alot of jobs would be gone. the oil companies say "fuck the environment, were god damn rich!"

Who ever said the Oil companys are not to blame...I just heard on the radio yesterday that Exxon Mobile made some rediculous amount of proffit this last quarter. Something like 30 BILLION!

fuckin liberals waste and steal it all. and spend it on dumb shit like renovating old buildings for government offices when just building a new one would be cheaper.

One of the major issues with this is that the minimum gas milage on vehicles is so low. People that can afford to drive these vehicles obviously don't care about the price of gas otherwise, they wouldn't dirve them. For some reason Americans feel like they need to have a big ass fucking car or a car that is faster so they can be better than the next guy. Or so they feel safer and more secure on the fucking road. The fact is, these vehicles use up twice as much gas. And obviously the people driving them don't really give a shit about how it costs them $80 a week to fill the tank.

It's simple supply and demand. These vehicles take up more supply than is necessary. I can drive in my jetta to work and get 21 miles to the gallon, or i can drive to work in a Durango that gets 11 miles to the gallon. I'm going the same distance in the same amount of time... do i really need that durango???

Why do we drive that Durango??? I can easily put a wife and 2 kids in another car. And it will get the same thing done. Am i taking that durango off road? probably not.

Yes I am aware that some people actually use these vehicles for their intended purpose. Example towing or hauling. But the vast majority of people that own gas guzzling vehicles do not need them. If we stop consuming as much supply, things will be much better off.

Notice how you won't fnd very many SUV's in Europe. I think they finally figured it out.

Problem: Gas is expensive as hell in Europe.

Solution: Drive cars that get 30 miles per gallon.

The price of gas is now cut in half compared to a vehicle that gets 15 miles per gallon.

I don't get it. You started the thread blaming the government for high gas prices and then tell people to quit blaming bush. Bush and Rove have further polarized our nat'l gov't, making it the way it is now. So:

1) If we blast Iraq, we'll send the MId-East into even greater instability causing oil prices to skyrocket.

2) Gas, like any other commodity traded in a "free-market" (more or less) economy, is controlled by the laws of supply and demand. At some point, the consumers are going to have to step up and take the brunt of the responsibilty for our choices and purchases in said economy. Fight the power, buy a bike.

3) China and India are going to continue to increase consumption of oil reserves, increasing demand and raising global oil prices. As a richer nation, we're going to have to adapt by pushing alternative (and ultimately cheaper) energy sources that will benefit our consumers in the long run, and not our president's oil-rich friends in texas.

4) Don't blame tree-huggers for closing your resort early.

If you didn't know already republicans have control of 55% of the senate, 54% of the house, 2/3 of the supreme Court, and the executive branch. I'd say thats a VERY nice chunk of the governement. Please don't bitch about "getting things done".

And I just love statements like:

"Canada is all jacked up because they are socialist liberals, which is what we'd be if we kept putting dem's in office."

#1 - I just want to hear your rationale behind Canada being "jacked-up" (providing that you do have rationale), just so I can get a good laugh.

#2 - ..Yes you're right, all democrats are socialists.

thats what i have always thought. but one problem. all the hybrids and electric things i see on the road today.... well...... there fucking ugly as shit. No, i have seen shits better actually.

Oil companies are a part of the world economy and in them selves have very little power. OPEC league of nations has control over the oil companies and OPEC is govermently controled mostly by the united states.

I have worked for several oil companies and they are not some secret society trying to control the world. Oil companies invest billions upon billions of dollars into more fuel efficient car technology and are at the forefrunt of research in alternative fuels.

It is economics oil people want to sell you oil they dont want you to bitch about the price they want you to be satified with your product.

They want fuel efficient cars because they will increase the market.

Shell spends 900 million dollars anually on enviromental control. Our own goverment spends less than 500 million or enviroment research with the bulk of the budget contracted out to nasa for outrageous expensive projects. Drilling for oil is one of the most enviromentally friendly processes on the planet. Compared to a coal mine that might take up a space of say 40 square miles for a pretty conservative mine a series of oil rigs can devolop an oil field with almost no envirmental impact.

The only impact comes from building roads into a field there is no impact from the rig.

There is A LOT of oil left on this planet. The fact is that there is so much that we will never run out ever. It is impossible. Ok I will try to explain this.

An oil well is not like a cavern in the ground it is most likely permable rock with oil saturation. If I took a piece of this rock to the surface it would look like a black rock. However if I put it under intense heat and pressure the oil flows through the rock. The best way to thing of an oil well is a can of soda. With gas and liquid intermixed. When you shake up the can of soda it shoots out all over the place and hence how you can use this method to harvest oil by adjitating the well. This is the method that was used in the beging with about a 30% recovery rate then we move on. However with new technology it is posibly to get 60% or so recovery and so the cycle continues. Our planet has TONS of oil left. We just cant get it.

Another point is that oil is in everything. Plastics, fuels, hydrogen comes from oil, steal additatives, the list is endlist infact the screen that you are looking at this was probably created with petroleum extracts. One of my teachers said it best, "We are like fucking indians, we use every god damn part of oil nothing is wasted"

WTF are you talking about cars are extreamly reliable I have a car that is older than me that runs like a top. Nothing else today is as reliable as modern cars.

In closing you know nothing about world economies or the petroleum business.

no, exxon mobil made 1.3 billion dollars in profit in the last 90 days. their CEO announced his retirement recently and recieved a 140 million dollar retirement package.

Nuclear power is actually considered a renewable source of energy. and I find it hard to believe those numbers, from what I've read it's more like 90% coal burning plants.

actually it was 400 million but that is beside the point. It is capitalism CEOs of companies make a shit load of money. Coca cola CEO make 20 million ect

^^Read the rest of this post before reading mine.

1. How is reducing gas consumption (more MPG=less total consumption) going to increase the market for oil? That doesn't make any sense.

2. Respiration, decomposition, and evaporation are much more environmentally friendly than drilling for oil. The rest of this statement I agree with.

3. But this statement makes you're previous one pointless. Infrastructure is needed to operate the rigs, look at alaska's north slope. Some of those areas, like Prudhoe Bay, encompass enormous amounts of land with roads between rigs, housing, and pipelines. Sure the rigs don't have an enormous impact, but the rest of drilling process does. And although the oil companies claim they can do it better, they never do (read this month's National geographic.)

4 and 5. You could very easily be right here, I have no idea. Do you mean we will never be able to access it, or are we working on the technologies to access it right now? Even so, at some point, barring colonizations of other planets and an armeggedon, we will at some point run out of oil.

In closing, environmental degredation is the first step in societal poverty (look at Africa) and in my opinion, oil could be America's achilles heel.

First I would like to say very good post.

1) By saying that fuel efficient technology would increase consumption in the long run. If we can create systems to better utilize fuel then there will continue to be systems that use this fuel. For example if we can make it so that jet airplanes use 1/2 the fuel they do now for a trip then ticket prices will significantly drop and more people will travel. It is the same way with cars. In a recent study people with hybrid cars and people with SUVs where studied and found that their gas consumption only slightly differed. The hybrid driver drove further distances and more often while suv drivers were more conservative with their driving. So by investing in hybrid technology it is possible to increase the market and feasibilty of oil carrying us into the future.

2. No system produces more power than that which is put in. Baring theroitical fusion studies. So ya drilling for oil can hurt the enviroment and we need to work on better ways to be more enviromentally friendly. But saying that the solution is a totaly new fuel is wrong.

3. New technologies are being devoloped every day to better collect oil and not harm the enviroment. Last week I went to a lecture on lazers that was pretty amazing. I wouldent be susprised if in 20 years we dont have to drill at all. So yes there is technology being devoloped to better extract oil.

4. I agree that we should continue to protect our enviroment and invest in alternative fuels

That being said it is wrong to assume petroleum is absolutely vital at the present time and continues to be a major source of energy and products in our lifetime.

There are current technologies that used in conjuction with petroleum could eliminate the oil crisis. Technologies like solar, gerthermal, wind, ect. It is possible to run a house completly off these alternative fuels but the only reason they are not widley used is two reason.

1) high start up cost

2) reliability

If we can solve these problems then our dependence on oil will drop and so will enviomental degredation.

there was an article about the bell curve of oil in the forum a couple of weeks ago. i think the thread it was in was titled what would you do or what are you gonna do or something like that. might be worth looking at.

Thank you darkfranchise, your post answered my questions. Believe it or not, I actually look some of this shit up and would like to point out a few more things (utilizing the numbered point concept. so hot right now!!!)

1) In terms of emissions, LEV can help more than a hybrid, so in terms of environmental imact, they could have less. Emissions are key to environmental quality, where as MPGs are more important to a pocketbook.

2)IF and only IF oil companies strive to obtain and implement new and less environmentally harmful extraction processes, petroleum usage might not be as environmentally destructive as the spin doctors make it out to be.

3)As of now, our oil habit is harming the environment, but if the pressure on the private sector for change becomes great enough, the oil companies can change.

4) This post only addresses the environmental impacts of oil comsumption. The socio-political impacts are a whole different story, one that i don't understand.

Me and my Dad were discussing this earlier. I remember when I was a kid, gas was only .89c a gallon. Not that I paid for it, but I just remeber the time ya know.

They know they can charge out the ass for gasoline, and they know people will pay. As long as they keep making billions and keep making people suffer, they are happy.

welp clinton made me embarrased so doesnt everything just suck!! Lets keep complaining about it everyone!

^^haha that was funny

Now for some truth:

You can cry, bitch, complain, sob, wet your pants or whatever and blame Bush tree huggers terrorist or who ever, fact is if you are affected by high gas prices, then you are part of that problem. With no consumers, no high gas prices. If you drove a big fucking truck up to now then you helped create this mess. If your still driving a big fuckin truck, your still not helping! If you drive unecassay distances, your not helping.

If you drive to the ski hill.. you get the picture.

To blame for high gas prices is everyone that uses energy in some form. Only now the people on the Asian continent are also keen on the privilage of using energy. So tuff! Stop you bitching and start doing something about it. Like legging it. Driving slower.....

Bush embarrases me as a president, Clinton embarreses me as an American.

Clinton was liked by the world Bush is world widely hated.

Clinton was impeached for lieing, Bush lies on a daily basis about better issues than his personal life.

Bush is the worst thing to happen to this county since slavery and I feel that unless drastic action is taken will be the end of America as we know it.

It is my right as an america to complain so I am going to use every possible outlet to make sure the world knows I hate George W Bush.
