The True People Who Invented Freesking

The 4 main people who inveted freesking are J.P.Auclair, JF Cusson, Iannick B., and Mike Nick. These were not the guys who were first intorduced into hucking cliffs, doing tricks, and pow skiing like glen plake and jonny decesare. They started fresh on there local snowboard park, poaching and doing the only tricks invented such as daffys, twisters, and back scratchers. They invented freesking before pipes were made and the first rail was a log only snowboarders could do. These people would build a little booter on side of the trail that would toss you ten feet, and session it for hours. This is also before people filmed and made movies for park skiers, not pow. To show you how far back, it wasn't until years later that freesking blew up and mike nick and iannick b. switched to "skiboarding".

How can you not count powder skiers as well?? Scott Schmidt was a maaajor pioneer in the freeskiing scene, hucking cliffs on size 200 straight skis. Although I agree that JP and JF DID start the revolution of park skiing, that isn't all of what started our great sport out to being what it is today, a fusion of the two.

Vinnie? Szocs? Atkinson? You are forgetting a bunch there sir. BTW Mike Nick was a skiboarder still when freeskiing started and Iannick didn't start to show up in movies until a few years after.

A few different zones all got going at the same time in general. Tahoe had a scene (Mammoth was a couple years later), Vail/Summit County, Whistler and Quebec/New England all got things rolling in the mid nineties. The first few times these groups got together was at the original freesking opens in Vail. Most competed on Salomon Super Force 9's. The 3S version was most used.

that would be snowboarders who invented freestyle skiing. snowboarders started hitting rails and jumps with some style long before the thought crossed anyt skiers mind. there were several skiers that saw this and wanted to do it on skis a couple years later. so they first started doing freesking but basically, without snowboarding, theres a good chance freeskiing on rails, wouldnt have been invented.

I think he's just talking about park skiing, but he made a misleading title. With the current title, coombs, schimdt, and plake started it basically.

yeah, you can't just say 4 people. It developed simulatneously in a bunch of different locations. like pollard was doing it with a buch of other people in hood, the tahoe scence blew up. I thinkg that the new canadian air force had the most to do with it though.

my other post got deleted because it was refering to a ski company that no one can talk about who think there the shit but never put out skis.....

Matthew: Where do you see line going with their skiboards and skiis? Any crazy new things planed to change the sports?

Mike: That's a J. Lev. question, but Line has always been devoted to progressing the sport ever since day one in J's garage he and I and the rest of the Line crew was under the same influence and thinking, skiing was lame and desperately needed a kick in the ass. So we gave it one.

anyone interested......well i thought this was a cool topic so i posted this.....

can't forget griffin cummings and the hood crew...who were BOLTING ceramic tails onto their race skis to land backwards. I can't believe no one ever mentions these guys

yeah and what about the guys who taught pollard at hood, they claim to have been there the same time jp was in quebec building jumps

ya, i left out a lot of people. Mike Douglass, Shnane Schocz, and a bunch of other people from the first Ski Movie by The Font Line. I'm talking about freesking before twintips and skiing backwords were even thought of. I'd also like to add this:

Interview With Ex-Pro Skiboarder: Mike Nick

By: Matthew

Matthew: How did you get started in the sport on skiboarding, what was your background?

Mike: I started skiing when I was 11, my father taught me. I grew up with the levinthal brothers and we would go skiing every weekend. Then we all began snowboarding. After a few years, we all went our separate ways to college but kept in touch. J. Lev. began making skiboards in college and we all started riding them together. Then J. and I got invites to the 98 X-Games for the first ever skiboard event...you know what happened next, and the rest is history.

I rode with a guy on a killy lift who went to high school with J. Lev. and Mike Nick and said he help invent twintips with them for a science fair project way back when.

Why hasnt anyone mentioned Shane McConkey? I see him as one of the original pioneers. Havent you guyes ever seen Global storming? 13, Ski movie?
