Jibs, if global wraming is real and overpopulation is going to happen, by your scientific perdictions, at the same time, so won't they balence themselves out. Flooding and heat kill the extra people and the rest adapt. I am not saying this is true our anything but it is just to prove that your argument premotes the idea that the world will balence itself out. However my idea that I threw out there was that the warming issue would be balenced out by the depleation of fossil fuels, which we also be a balence in the fact that there would be a tremendous decress in pollution. Yes, global warming is undeniable. In fact, by the year 2020 there is little chance that there will be enough snow in southern ontario for ski resorts to be a viable business. Information she volunteered, i didn't directly inquire about skiing.
As for my part in it, i advocate as i'm doing now. I don't rev my car over 2000rpm, i don't drive it if i don't have to (i live a ways out of town when i'm at my parents, driving is essential). I recycle, i put garbage in the bins. I reuse as much as i can, and use things until they are unusable. I give away before throwing away.
I never once said you should saccrifice your quality of life, live well, but live responsibly. No one needs to drive a hummer, so why waste the money and fuel for bragging rights? My opinion is that most people are shallow. They spray chemicals on their lawns to show up their neighbours. They drive gas guzzling vehicles for the ladies. Large companies have created a throw away society (timex doesn't sell spare parts for any of their watches, sony makes you pay 60 bucks just to LOOK at a broken MD if you don't have a warrantee). These are the things that need to change, and as bigj is showing, no one is willing to take responsibility for it. It's a group problem, not an individual...differences can only be made if everyone pitches in. bigj also mentioned that at some time we'll have some sort of miracle bit of technology to fix these problems...i hope your right. But what, seriously could we come up with that will clean billions and billion of cubic meters of water and air? Someone also stated that these could be natural shifts....yah, that could be, but are you suggesting that the billions of tonnes of pollutants released into the air has nothing to do with it? What about the ozone layer? Scientists have been watching it dissipate for decades, only since the end of CFC arosols and air conditions has any improvement been noticed. The amount of CFCs released was minimal compared to other toxins.

see you have no answer either, so we are fucked regardless, so why should I not rev my truck or anything, we have done the damage and nothing we can do, as you admitted will make a diffrence, so what, postpone the inevitable. By the way, I recycle, I do drive a lot but I have to, and I have done quite a bit of work to help the enviroment. Like I said I am still an 'enviromentalist' republican (not by liberal standards but by republican), I would rather not drill in anwar and fuck shit up like that. I think that there is nothing we can do right now to stem the warming, so why try, if their is a solution it will present itself, either through tecnology or some other means, but now there is no solution, so don't act like there is.

Aright...this is my last post, i got a going away party to go to...i'm off to fernie finally, i'll probably revive the thread in the middle of next week.
I'd just like to say, bigj, you're pare right on that note...mother nature will balance herself out...but only when it comes to humans. Eventually disease and starvation will diminish the population. The point i'm stressing is the diversity of the natural world, by then, will be nearly extinct. Is that a cost your willing to pay? Why is the human species more important then other species? Humans could survive for a very long time on this planet...but really, there is no more then 4 generations left on this planet, that's it. More likely your grandchildren will be the last though. Stephen Hawking wrote that by the year 2600 and current rate of growth, every square foot of dry land will have a human standing there, and the power required to sustain us would outshine the sun when standing on mars. That's 6 generations from now..SIX!
The only point i'm trying to hit home here is that you can't just sit back and expect the next generation to deal with it. Yes, it would be tough to REVERSE global warming and the damage we've caused....but is it not a reasonable idea to slow further damage, or better yet, end it all together? Cars today have worse milage then cars in the 80s....we are not moving in the right direction at all.

Well, it is merely an insight- something to make you think, I suppose. In no way am I saying that justifies a war, but if you look at it, you will find that many things in sports apply (to an extent) in real life too. So I will explain my saying in the context that I used it. Or try.
You can spend as much on defenSe as you want, but it won't stop the problem. Lets say, for instance, we have a KLM flying into New York, however it is hijacked. I dont believe that we yet have developed a hijacked plane radar, so this plane is going to hit whatever it wants, wherever. This is just one small example. Furthermore, aren't many people against the Star Wars program or weaponization of space or what have you? These people being mainly not Conservatives. Is this not a form of defenSe? Do correct if I am wrong.
I for one, can't yet say that the war was fully justified. However, if we look back to after 9/11, I believe a high majority of people felt the need to stop terrorism where it starts. To me, Bush was only doing what a real leader should do. Maybe he took it too far. Maybe people have to realize that the war on terror is not exactly conventional and anything we've seen before. Did he maybe go into Iraq under false information and reasons? Possibly, perhaps likely. Yet going in there for other reasons beyond WMD's, may alone justify it. There wasn't much protest against the Kosovo crisis, when NATO, led by the States went in and stopped Slobadon because of genocide. Something of which was much worse in Iraq. So yes, innocent people have died in Iraq and continue to, but hopefully one day they will no longer ever have to. As long as Saddam was in power, the innocent would have kept on dying. Deny it if you want. So only time will indeed tell wether Iraq was a somewhat worthwhile cause, or another Vietnam. I also feel that some of the Iraqi people only further compound the complications and, thus the rising death toll. They, as it seems many Islamic/Middle easterners are, are very proud people. There may come a time to set that pride aside for just a minute, so that in the future you they have something to truly be proud of. Burning thier own oil supply lines isnt helping anyone. You might say they are only standing up for themselves from an oppressor, but at this point, with so much scrutiny, world interest and opposition to the war, do you really think that the occupation is meant solely to obtain oil? It really doesnt even make sense politically for GW if he wants to get re-elected. I think, with all that oil, that if the Iraqi people were to simply work with the states for a while, they could in fact have an incredibly strong economy.
