The threat of terrorism has been exaggerated

Okay, let's debate it. I don't give a shit about terrorism. Know why? Officially, 2,752 people died in the attacks on the World Trade center. Roughly 500 of those were foreign nationals, from 91 different nations. That means 2,252 Americans died. Now let's look at the stats.

Over 1.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with cancer of some kind, this year. More than 500,000 Americans will die of cancer this year; that means that since September 11, 2001, about 1.5 million Americans have died from cancer.

The total number of AIDS cases in the world is close to 50 million. Over 3 million people die worldwide from AIDS every year--- that's about 15,000 in North America (the number of new HIV cases in North America every year is close to 50,000).

According to the 2004 government census, 45 million Americans don't have health insurance. 35.9 Americans live in poverty. If you don't know, 'As defined by the Office of Management and Budget and updated for inflation using the Consumer Price Index, the average poverty threshold for a family of four in 2003 was $18,810; for a family of three, $14,680; for a family of two, $12,015; and for unrelated individuals, $9,393.' (http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/income_wealth/002484.html)

What's my point? I don't give a shit about terrorism because the main causes of death in America are as follows: tobacco. Alcohol. Poor diet and physical inactivity. Motor vehicle crashes. Suicide. Homicide. My point is that terrorism is not even CLOSE to being as much of a threat to Americans as any one of the problems listed above.

That said, why are we spending billions upon billions of dollars on the War on Terrorism, and we don't even know if we're doing anything to stop terrorism? As far as I can tell, we're promoting international terrorism, not defeating it. If the point of the war on terrorism is to protect America, why aren't we giving all that money to the Department of Homeland Security? Or I guess I should ask, if the point of the War on Terrorism is to save American lives, why aren't we using our tax dollars to fund disease research, to find effective cures for cancer and AIDs, to restrict the tobacco industry, to make our highways safer, educate our children to make responsible choices so they won't kill themselves or someone else, and address the problem of poverty?

Bring it on.

I'd have to say that you have a point. However, I think that terrorism is more than just a threat of people dying. It is a slap in the face. It is people killing other people. Diseases are and always will be around. Once one is cured, there will be more, so it is hard to completely stop that. I do agree that NORTH Americans have to get off their asses and get active.

signatures are for pussies

i agree with u but you can't expect that when terrorists are crashing planes into buildings and killing 50,000 people within 1 day that they are going to stand there and say 'hey! lets put money into stopping people from smoking, and making them exercise!!'

Where the hell did you get a figure like 50,000 people? Stop pulling numbers out of your ass, if you'd actually read the thing, you'd see that it was 2700.

'hey! lets put money into stopping people from smoking, and making them exercise!!'

Thats his point. It would save alot more americans if they put money into anti smoking ads and taxes than if they work on terrorisim. All the money poured into the army against terrorisim could have done alot towards getting rid of alot of those diseases.

Yeah actual terrorist acts done upon our country have been relativley low. BUT, that doesnt mean these people arnt dangerous and couldnt nuke a city (nukes are such simple devices) or poison a water supply. Just because the death toll hasnt been high in the country yet doesnt mean we should just let them gain power, amass weapons, and just let them do what they want. I think it's good theres a global effort to rid the world of these kinds of people.

God is an American.

Airight, you make some good points, but I disagree with the main point. It is never acceptable to sacrifice American lives that are taken prematurley. Think about how you would feel if you had family or friends in one of those 2000 some people that died. Cancer cannot be prevented, to a certain degree, but terrorism can. Don't get me wrong, I by no means agree about being in Iraq, but if there was a legitimate threat from Saddam Husiane, then it is good that we eliminated that threat. Yes, it is costing us money, but it is not wasted money, if it is protecting inocent lives. I do agree with you that we should be paying more attention to reasearch of diseases, such as AIDS, but things like AIDS are preventable, if people would use condoms etc. We may lose many more people to cancer then we did in the 9/11 attacks, but that doesn't mean that when someone kills 2000 people, that we sit around and do nothing. Terrorism is preventable, and if it protects innocent lives, then we need to take all measures to stop it.

Thats me side. Let the critisism flow in.

FS- Why CAN'T I expect that? Why can't I expect my government to address threats to America logically by acknowledging that funding wars is just killing more people, and killing more people is creating more terror and the inspiration to hate America?

I'd love to have my government address terrorism logically, by defending America's borders through a well-funded and well-thought out national security program. I'd love to have my government addressing terrorism by promoting America's goodwill to the world through diplomacy and American aid.

KLD and Ice-Is-Scary: I fully agree that the American government should take steps to stop terrorism. I believe that the terrorist threat to our country can be significantly decreased through logical American action. Now what do you think that action should be?

Stacie: 'Aren't you going to open your gift?'

Wayne: 'If it's a severed head, I'm going to be very upset.'

I don't think that war is the solution is the solution, but I don't think that it should be aid either, because as long as we are aiding countries like former Afganistan, then all we are doing is funding terrorists who already hate us, and will not change their veiws. I think that we should get out of Iraq and Afganistan, and focus on homeland security. More advanced methods of ariport screening, background checks for immigrants etc. If we start focusing on ourselves, more than other countries, I think that is a better solution then bombing the fuck out of someone.

i agree with the person above me who said that there possibly could be many many more deaths from terrorism if a successful attack was made, also just because only 2700 people died because of terrorism, it doesnt mean that we shouldnt care about terrorism, its just like giving up research on a disease that kills about that many people a year, just because the disease doesnt kill many people, does it mean we should just fuck the rest of them over because not enough people die for us to care, if we can prevent american deaths then i say we should try hard to do so, and terrorists are tangible enemies that we can find and eliminate, but curing cancer or aids isnt as straightforward, even if we spent millions more on cures for cancer or aids i doubt we would find a cure quicker than we would without the extra money, because there is so mucn money being put into those things already, also all of the other main causes of death in america cant be solved, people are always going to kill each other, and it would be fairly impossible to stop everyone from smoking, and preventing car accidents would also be nearly impossible, so what else are we supposed to do, another big terrorist attack would also have much more of an effect than the body count, the economy would take a hit, and many of the negative things that followed 9/11 would occur, so saying that we shouldnt care about terrorism is simple minded, you have to see that we can stop terrorism, unlike many other uncontrollable things that cause deaths, and we do need to stomp terrorism out, and not pussy it and spend half of the money that we need to actually finish the job, and if we do the job right the first time, hopefully we wont have to worry about it again

Sim, I hope you're not suggesting that a figure of speech meant to apply to sports should be used to justify military actions that result in thousands of innocent deaths along with those involved in the conflict. I don't think anyone's saying that terrorism isn't a problem, only that it's been played up to such an extent that people are looking at it as the biggest problem in the world right now, and that fear is motivating skewed judgements and perspectives. This isn't even a partisan comment, but it's quickly turned into that kind of thread.

Lineskier10- I don't think terrorists are tangible enemies that we can find and eliminate. I think terrorists are people like you and me who are motivated by something to commit heinous acts. I think that by attempting to stomp out terrorism in places like Afghanistan through violence, we are actually creating more motivation for people to commit such acts against Americans.

^Exactly, by destroying the Twin Towers on 9/11, the terrorists not only succeded in killing people, but also in scaring the fuck out of the worlds only superpower. They also cost us more lifes, because if we had not been attacked then none of the soldiers that have died in Iraq or Afganistan would be dead, because we wouldn't be there right now.

I just don't think that it can simply be ignored and considered minimal because it is less deaths in comparison to a deadly disease.

I don't think that it should be ignored, either. I DO think that it should be considered in relation to its actual threat, and it should be addressed in terms of that threat. Case in point- I think less money should be spent on combating terrorism, and the money that IS spent on combating terrorism can be used much more effectively.

Stacie: 'Aren't you going to open your gift?'

I think it should be ignored. I think it should be made into a joke. build the 'al quaeda theme park,' very commercial, very cheesy, disney kind of stuff... pirates of the carribean meets 9/11. destroy their credibility... thats my kind of solution. but in any case... i believe ive posted the concise version of this thread several times before so.... yeah, fucking worried soccer moms...

The USA is funny with their 'terror alerts' even cambodians make jokes about it. Seriously...2700 people died? So what. How many people do the americans kill each year because of their petty foreign policy? Did they ever rebuild that 'bomb making factory' (ie the pharmaceutical company that was making life saving drugs) in Sudan they cratered? I know that 3 years later that crater was still there. What about the 100s of thousands of iraqi's that were killed and refered to simply as 'collateral damage'? How many lives of inocent foreigners equal 2700 american lives? To America, war is ok as long as it's not their country that's getting bombed. I mean, al quada made a point that was completly missed by the majority of americans (everyone i talked to about it while travelling 'got it' even my 88 year old granpa got it). They attacked america's financial, military and tried to get the government headquaters of what they thought of as a 'rogue state'. THE EXACT SAME THING THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT DOES TO OTHER COUNTRIES. You think terrorism is a problem in your country? THEN STOP BEING A TERRORIST. America brings it on themselves. I know no one on here can do a thing about it, but sitting in fear and believing the OBVIOUS lies your country feeds you doesn't help. Terrorism is exagerated by the government because it makes people afraid and people are easiest to control when they're scared.

'Imagine that your neighbor hates you and is always creating problems for you. If you lose your temper and develop hatred toward him, your digestion is harmed, your sound sleep goes, and you have to start using tranquilizers and sleeping pills. You then have to increase the dosages of these, which harms your body. Your mood is affected; as a result, your old friends hesitate to visit you. You gradually get more white hair and wrinkles, and you may eventually develop more serious health problems. Then your neighbor is really happy. Without having inflicted any physical harm, he has fulfilled his wish!

If in spite of his injustices, you remain calm, happy and peaceful, your health remains strong, you continue to be joyful, and more friends come to visit you. Your life becomes more successful. This really brings about worry in your neighbour's mind. I think this is the way to inflict harm on your neighbor. I do not mean this as a joke, i have a certain amount of experience here. In spite of some very unfourtunate circumstances, I usually remain calm, with a settled peace of mind. I think this is very useful. You must not consider tolerance and patience to be signs of weakness. I consider them signs of strength.'

Question for the american members: do you actually live in fear of another terrorist attack?

And the first post formulated my thoughts exactly. I'd say it's more important for the american goverment to invest in programs to reduce cancer, AIDS, and other such diseases (stem cell research, anyone?), launch campaigns warning the dangers of obesity, and also make their healthcare system a lot better, ensuring healthcare for everyone at lower prices.

You want to know why? For money. Duh. Politions, except for maybe mayors, dont go into politics to do good, they go into it for money. bush goes to war, the war makes huge amounts of corporate dollars. If bush fought the tabaco companies, he would lose stock, cause not only does he endorse them, but they are big corporations, and in his mind, corporations good.

' If bush fought the tabaco companies, he would lose stock, cause not only does he endorse them, but they are big corporations, and in his mind, corporations good.'

Well they are good, they get goods produced at cheaper costs so that you don't have to pay out of the ass for the things that you need everyday. You are a corporate bitch just like the rest of us, and if you want to get rid of them then you pay out of the ass for every consumer product that you need to keep your pleasent western lifestyle. And don't fuck with big tobacco.

Also, yall who are afraid of the Bush administration, why? What have they done to endanger you personally? Unless you are in the military or make a living blowing glass bongs you have not been put in harms way or lost your livelyhood. Name how many rights that you have lost due to the partiot act, what can you not do now that you could do 3 years ago? When you find one thing that you cant do now that you routinely did before Bush, tell me, and in what ways are you more in danger now with the patriot act and the Bush admin then without. Now it may be a bit of a bitch, but it is in place to protect us, and I would like to error on the side of saftey.

As for the fear of terrorist attack, I have been scared once since 9/11. A month ago they caught a pakistani man filming the sky scraper that I worked in, he had expired visas and on the tape he also had the sky scrapers in atlanta and dallas. That made me uneasy, my place of work, Bank of America Corporate Center, was potentially being scouted for a terrorist attacks. That is as close as it has gotten to me since 9/11, and I am glad that we do have the saftey measures in place thay we do.

Thusly, we will be a world driven on light impact energy sources rather then the dirty fuels we have now. But really global warming is not a pressing issue. And don't argue with me on Bush's enviromental policys, because I (with the exception of the Kyoto Protocol) dissagree with him. It will work it self out in time, we will develop better technology and it will become a non issue in due time. But nothing that we will due today will matter so we should not worry about it. BigJ you ignorant sac of shit. Sorry, but i have trouble containing myself when people say 'as though they have a glimmer of intellegence in the matter' that global warming and the environment is not a pressing issue. Wrong on so many levels. You think that our generation won't have to deal with this??? By the year 2050 there WILL be 9 billion people on this planet, the population of the USA will have DOUBLED. And you think, that by not doing anything the earth will simply ADAPT to this? It took 4 BILLION years simply to put something that resembles a human on this earth. Yah, she'll fix everything alright, just might take a billion years or so, but don't worry, my nephew won't mind that the world he grows up in will be a filthy wreck, ALL of the great mammals of the earth (you know the ones you go 'awww...he's cute!' to in the zoo then 'lets go see the monkeys!' You know..those ones? Gone. Yet you figure, that with the destruction of the greatest accomplishment of nature, the great mammals, won't affect anything? That's she'll fix herself? Are you stupid? Nature IS a pyramid, HUMANS ARE NOT ABOVE IT. Were part of it and were throwing the whole thing off balance because we've cheated nature through our advancements and blown our population out of control. The advancements aren't a bad thing if managed properly which we certainly aren't doing. In 2050, when there's 1/3 more people, few if any great mammals, the rivers will be poisoned (the usa recently released a statement concerning the state of the fish in 2/3s of americas lakes and rivers, you're to limit your consumption due to mercury poisoning) do you really think it won't affect you at all? Global warming is playing a major factor in destroying animals. Rainforests are drying up, savanah's are blowing away. Migration routes a million years old are getting skewed by water tempurature changes and current shifts. You think a vote for kerry is a vote against america?? Well a vote for bush is a vote against the planet. What's more important, your selfish desires for power and money, or being able to live a full and healthy life? Is driving your hummer more important then seeing wildlife in the mountains? (half of all bird species will be considered threatened/endangered in the next 50 years and no where in america besides alaska can a grizzly bear get further then 30kms from a road. But your right, let the next generation deal with it, after all, i've got my high score on tony hawks pro skater to worry about. Joe Blow born in 2010 can deal with the, by the time he's of age, MUCH bigger problem then we have now. It's like going to the doctor and having him say 'you have a small tumor on your brain' 'will it kill me tomorrow?' 'No, but it'll grow and then it probably will' 'ok then, i'll wait until it's going to kill me, then deal with it...after all maybe by then they'll have a miracle cure.'

How rediculous is that?

About global warming again, there is nothing that we can do right now, we don't have the technology right now to make a dent, and I think we shouldn't harm our economy right now to make superfical changes that won't matter in the long run. The world is a everychaning thing whether humans are here or not. No doubt we can affect the environment bigtime but you cant say WE are causing the changes in weather patterns. the surface of this earth has been recycled plenty of times and the face of this earth will change whether we pollute this planet or not.

There is certainly enough to come to that conclusion. There may not be a smoking gun, but the peices fit. yeah BigJ, youre totally right, life on earth is far less important than the state of the american economy. how foolish of me to be so arrogant.

and complicated issue... yes... but heres some advice, and feel free to spread the love STOP HAVING KIDS. less people = less problems. and you know if the most technically advanced country ever stops creating problems and introduces solutions... well, (we can assume other advnaced nations will follow) thats about a billion less people contributing to the problem... then after that... itll take about a century for everyone to catch up.

The following post is a piece of shit.

''About global warming again, there is nothing that we can do right now, we don't have the technology right now to make a dent, and I think we shouldn't harm our economy right now to make superfical changes that won't matter in the long run. So if global warming is real, which I remain unsure on, what we do now would just be a waste, but in the future we will be able handle it more efficently and cheaply.''

Wouldn't this suggest that we should probably try not to screw it up any further, so that it can be more easily and quickly dealt with later on? In which case... environmental regulations of this sort remain extremely important, even if they won't have an immediate and direct effect.

In a haze

A stormy haze

I’ll be around

I’ll be loving you

Always

Always

Here I am

And I’ll take my time

Here I am

And I’ll wait in line

Always

Always...
