I am SO stoked Harper has proposed to cut the public subsidy to political parties in Canada. Yes, it's mean, and I love every minute of it. 6 years ago the Liberal Party banned corporate donations to political parties, and instead had the government give $1.95 per vote to the political parties. It was a great move, big money has no place in influencing politics, but having the taxpayer pay for it instead isn't very good either. The Bloc, the separatist party from Quebec was now receiving federal money to further their cause of leaving the country. Does that sound right? Of course not.
Since then, the Conservatives have rallied the individual voter to donate to them (maximum $5000). They have done very well with this and the Liberals, mainly as a result of removing their own corporate donations, have done terribly. The NDP has better fundraising. Unfortunately for the opposition parties, none of them are very good at fundraising, and all of them are in debt. Tories, even when you take away 1/3 of their funding (they get hurt the most) are still in the black because they know how to motivate people to donate to them.
Hopefully this means the Bloc will disappear. The Green party will probably die too, and that is fine by me. This is going to be a confidence motion most likely, and I bet it will pass. Nobody can afford another election (except the Tories) and with the credit crisis going on right now, no bank will loan an already in debt political party more money. I fucking love it.
Now, this could backfire for the Tories in the long run, in the form of a united left party. This isn't good for the Tories (or my own personal views) but it is probably better for democracy in this country. The Liberal, NDP, and Green parties all have such similar views, it's as if there are 3 representatives from the same party at the table when you watch a leaders debate.
Bottom line is it is wrong for both companies and taxpayers to fund PRIVATE institutions, which political parties are. If you feel so strongly for your party, volunteer your time and donate your dollars. I do.
Oh and I'm not really expecting much response about this (although I'm sure JD will disagree with me) but I wanted to vent. Happy Day!
