The state of skiing

*warning*

long rant, but I think you should read it,

especially you kiddies out there

*sub warning*

this is not directed to EVERYONE. but it is directed to most of you

i have been riding along time, and have been involved in freestyle since i was

a lil kid and it first started to come onto the scene (thin K2 poachers, proto

1080s). over the past few years, ive noticed something really disturbing in

this sport. the total loss of personal style.

the state of skiing today is pretty fucking dismal. honestly. does anyone have

any personal opinion on anything anymore? everyone, pros and all you on NS

alike, are just trendy as fuck. when a new idea comes around, people bash it to

hell, shield themselves from it, then, around a year later, it becomes the cool

thing to do. need examples?

lets see.

1 footed or rolling influenced grinds.

this mass of people i am talking about rip this potentially awesome new source

of influence to shreds. instead of embracing the idea that people are trying to

progress skiing and add their own personal style, these styles arnt (or werent)

cool right now. in a year, every one of this group will be trying or doing

them. cause they will be the new cool thing.

Grabs.

every year someone does some cool grab. after then land thier jump, that grab

is all i see for the next year or so.

-truckdrivers.

-octograb

-rockets

nothing against those tricks, but why do people feel that they have to do them

exactly, instead of maybe progressing thier own style?

no poles.

first, no poles is NOTHING new, so dont thing your on the cutting edge for skiing without them.

now, remember last year, how every single one

of you ripped it apart. look at a terrain park now. every single person in

there has lost thier poles. who cares if it does or doesnt look good? its COOL.

neon clothing, specially the solid color suit thing

first, i could care less what people wear, shit, i like neon stuff too. alot

of that gear looks pretty good. but the fact that EVERYONE jumps on that trend,

ugh, its not cool when everyone looks the same!

Ok. now, howbout Kryptons or SPKs?

despite the fact that both are JUST boots, its pretty much impossible to find a

person in the park without them. forget fit, SALOMON IS COMMING OUT WITH

LEATHER ONES!! OMG. now i cant do a damn thing to the boots to actually make

them fit right, but ill look cool as fuck.

I myself have the crosses, and to be 100 percent, im not that impressed. even

after alot of custom work, the flex still feels rather dead. they are fine

boots, but to limit your choices to two or three boots strictly cause they are

cool, is retarded.

Need anymore??

the bottom line is that skiing is becoming self destructive. No one cares about

their personal style. Its all about looking like everyone else. that is BAD

people! Look at skiers like Pollard, Tanner, Candide, Mahre, Jon, Dave Creighton

(totally forgot how to spell it), Vanular,

Favre, etc etc. these skiers, along with a number of others, are unique. You can

see a black silhouette of pretty much any of them skiing, and YOU CAN IDENTIFY

THEM!

Im not saying people shouldn’t do things that make them

happy. If you love to spin your ass off on boxes, then go for it. if you feel

like doin a 1620, go for it. I cant stand stuff like that, but that doesn’t matter.

What matters is people ski for themselves, instead of trying to blend in with

everyone. instead of hating on someone for doing something unique or different (cough, like tight pants cough), just let them do it, or try to appreciate it. we need to stop suppressing creativity, and embrace individuality.

i dunno about you guys, but I started skiing to be different, now all you want to do is be the

same.

im predicting a lot of hate, but before that happens... let me say.

i completly agree, unique styles are wat drives the sport forward and wat keeps it interesting.

oh an a truckdriver is a sick grab but i wanna see it done with something original. like we only ever see it done with a normal spin or a cork. i think it would look dope with a bio seven. and if its been done give us a link or something cause i wanna see that shit!!

yea i agree with what your saying too, but believe me if i could be a innovative as guys like vanular, farve, pollard, and tanner then i would. If i had the skill to be able to create my own flips and grabs i would defently try to seek into new areas were i could.

As for devolping indivual style i complety agree with too. But no one wants to be bashed...No one wants to post a edit of them trying to do something new and have people tear them apart. Everyone wants acceptence and the best way to get it seems like is to replicate someone whos better than you. In no way am i encourgaging this it just seems like it is a fact of life. Personnaly i love it when people do new things especailly when you see skiers who arent pro or amatuer or shit like that. I think its sick that they are willing to go and try things that arent normal because they are subject to alot more possible bashing. Unlike if tanner dicided to start skiing with one pole or some crazy shit like that it would catch on faster than anything else.

good post...

oh yeah! ressi tips! how could i forget!! (haha, i wear um from time to time too tho)

ye thats pretty much wat i got from his post, hes pissed of cause everyone is sking for other people instead of themselves.

but also id like to add, ski for the sport of skiing itself, so ya try new stuff out its all part of keeping the newschool kicking.

btw i wouldnt worry bout posers who bash on people comming up with individual style, eventually newschool will die down a little like all extreeme sports go through their unavoidable phases. and only the die hards will remain. then new styles will emerge and the sport will be reborn yet again.

i dont know about you but the guy that did the 1620 is more different then probably 90% of the people that ski, its not everyday that you see those.

The only thing i hate is spin to win. I cant stand anything more than a 10. its all hucked. cept for tjs s/1440

can u just put some style into a massive cork 5 7 or 9. that 1620 shit is gay

forsure man that's all true...i tried wearing all pink and got much hate haha...although i'm sure a bunch of other people have worn all pink before

I completely agree, everybodies becoming exactly alike, fashion, tricks and even music, people just do stuff because they wanna be cool, pitty stupid to be honest, just enjoy skiing,

here is the case and point of this dudes thread.

Who cares, the kid was out there having fun, felling the vibe and went for it. He got it, fuck yeah to him for doing, tring, and getting it! Seriously one of the best things in skiing is going out there and trying something you may have been thinking of trying for a while, and then landing it!

word! thank you. do i personally like the way it looks when people spin like tops? nope. but this constant bashing of others styles is what im talking about. let the sport become multi-faceted! let there be people that push the fronter of what is possible (jon, double flips, olenicks double in the pipe, etc), and people like pollard (not nesscesarly just his style, but the way he rides). If people just do thier own thing, the sport will be much more interesting.

and to the kid who said its gonna go through that crazy phase and die out, i was gonna write that in there, but didnt. defiantly, skiing will blow up, and in about 10 years go from snowboardings current status (cause in 4-5 years, skiing will replace snowboarding as the new hot shit), to not cool at all. all the fakes will leave, and whats left will be the same guys (and girls) who were doin it since the beginning, and hopefully some fresh faces that are just as passionate about it.

YOU DON'T NOTICE THESE THINGS IF YOU DONT SPEND ALL DAY IN THE PARK.

go ski, drop a cliff, smoke a bowl, hike a ridge, slap on some skins, do whatever the fuck you want, thats skiing.

If everyone did something unique, then everyone would be pro. And that wouldn' work very well. You NEED tons of kids buying the same orage suit to keep the industry alive. Plus, does this really piss you off that much that skiing is trendy? Cuz really, I don't care, as long as the snow falls, ya know?

i thought the 1620 is sick and why would you hate on him for it? did you HAVE to watch the video of it? you care way to much about what other people are doing

Your retarted...

Think about it for a second... no not if your retarted or not...but you seem like it, but that statement you just typed out all in caps, then what you put below that... This is the type of shit I hate, and I think this thread is trying to point out.

You basically sum up in your CAPS lock sentence that you hate the park, or that you think park skiers should go somewhere else. Then you talk about doing whatever the fuck you want, thats skiing... basically saying go actually ski somewhere else on the mtn to have fun. WHO CARES where the fuck people spend their time. If they have fun hitting the same rail for the whole day, or sessioning a jump line then fine, don't hate on them cause they can do shit you can't.

Please read my sig, that pretty much sums up what I think... oh and STOP YOUR FUCKING HATING!

Well said, except I, myself, didn't start skiing to be different, I started because it is fun. Other than that, I agree.

I love you.

But I have to disagree on your little part about SPK's and Kryptons. I love my SPK's. I got fitted, tried on more than one boot, etc. I like the SPK for its made padding, wider fit, ease of buckling down with massive buckles, and the shock absorber in the foot that makes landing flat almost painless. Does that make me trendy?

well, on the fashion issue, deep down, a lot of these "super progressive" skiers are taking shit from snowboarding. the solid color matching suits are definitely from snowboarding. goggle sag? condom hats? thats right. snowboarding.

if you think about it, some of the most progressive skiers also get some time on snowboards. laurent favre comes to mind. eric pollard, obviously, as well.

but i definitely agree that skiing is going through a very rough stage right now. we are still in a spin-to-win phase, still in a very closed-minded image phase, still in a 'lets pretend we dont steal from other sports even though we do' phase...

want see where skiing is going? check out some snowboard movies. or just get out any ski movie with candide in it. AMPLITUDE and STYLE will always be the trademarks of action sports with a future.

and about spks and rampages, until someone offers me a boot that is better for freestyle skiing, im gonna wear my spks. and no, im not getting the leather ones haha.

i am sooo pressured, there is about a 1:200 skier to boarder ratio at my school. im not "in style", i dont give a fuck, i'll do whatever pleases me, if i want to learn something new, i'll learn something new. the whole ratio thing was to show you guys, that if i did take the pressure, i wouldnt be on NS now, i'd probably be on some boarding site (not that i have anything against boarding), but i wouldnt have two peices of wood, id only have one, and no poles. but i love skiing. pressure means nothing. clothing style means nothing. if you can ski, thats all that matters, and nothing else and i wouldnt change it for the world.

hahaha. perfect.

But yes, I repect your opinion, and i completely agree, but i cannot count how many times i've read threads almost exaactly like this one. an this is how each and everyone goes down:

1. The writer starts out giving his opinion on skiers being unique ,yaddda yadda yadda.

2.everyone reads it, nods their head in agreement and will make a comment as simple as " i agree"

3. a very few number if people give a detailed description on how they see teh sport, and in the long run everyone agrees on teh same with.

this means we're all on the same page and have changed our sport forever right?

Wrong. No matter how many people agree and give their opinion and rant about individuality, those same people will never ever change their own ways of following trends. And I'll admit, I'm just liek that too. I agree completely with everythign you said, but look at me! I thought tight pants were ballin', so I went and sewed in a pair of my snowpants and i couldn't be happier. I went out of my way just to get this look that I wanted. That's not very individual of me. I think that if people didnt focus on their style of clothes, everyone would look even more alike then they do now.

So in the long run, there really arn't that many options for us to be unique in the way we dress. And yes, I'm aware the thread wasnt only about style of clothing, but thats all my brain could muster up on this night. I won't even touch doing the same tricks, cause by the way, you're abslutly right there as well. But maybe for tricks it goes the same as my opinion on clothes. I don't know, the old brain isnt working too smoothly at this point, so i'm PROBABLY not makingany sense. Oh well. Have fun guys.
