The Song This World Desperately Needs

Telling it like it is

It goes one for Rex Tillerson

2 for Barack

3 for the coal money blasting of mountaintops

start to connect the dots

from drought to the global south

its time to wake the fuck up and freak out

climate action now

we either keep the oil in the ground

or exxon rakes the cash while coastal cities drown

they got 5 times the reserves than we know its safe to burn

but the screams don't ring as loud as their projected returns

200 million on lobbying to shape energy policy

thats warping our atmosphere and warping our democracy

to buy off Mitt Romney / plus capitol hill

no more ice in the arctic so its drill baby drill

When congress is straight sponsored by coal oil and gas

you best believe they won't let a single climate bill pass

CHORUS

Dirty lobby writes a check and congress writes em one back

30 million in subsidies for more smoke stacks

for more / asthma attacks / for turnin' the gulf black

keeping america hooked on their product like straight crack

we give em 6 times the tax breaks than we give to renewables

no wonder people say wind and solar aint doable

a crucible / to keep clean energy on its knees

to appease fossil fuels/ but the scientists agree

that if we let the earth warm right above 2 degrees

then we hit tipping points and can't stop rising seas

that's 200 million climate refugees by 2050

immigration reform starts to looks a bit more tricky

and west nile makes its way to your town and your city

now listen close to the next cause the math aint so pretty

20 years 100 million dead from dirty energy

so ask yourself who's the real public enemy

brazil to islamabad / chad to somalia

its time to wake up, cause your grandkids are calling ya

they didn't cause this but they'll pay with their tears

while we stand at the pump with hands over our ears

this is real / this is now / so wake up and freak out

and get a grip / we're in a storm we can still right the ship

CHORUS

a revolution of the mind a revolution of the heart

from the keystone blockade to those west virginia ramparts

get organized turn off your tv

join the global mass movement to be fossil fuel free

get your school's money out of shell oil and BP

cuz if we don't have a planet what's the use of that degree

go to 350.org if you want to know more

when you fight for climate justice you fight for the world's poor

you fight for human rights and for diversity of life

for people over profit / and love over strife

stand up to riot gear and break the climate silence

tear down the apathy never ever stay quiet

our kids will ask us what we did when we knew

did the youth rise up / even if it meant handcuffs

or sitting in a cell / so that justice would prevail /

not just for human beings for polar bears and whales

i want to tell them that i tried with all of my might

and i'll see you on the streets as we continue the fight

that's how it adds up.

If before a war every soldier had to listen to a Jack Johnson album, they would all say fuck this war and go to the beach

Very well could be

OP, why would you for a second even consider that rip on a classic to be worthy of greatness. Regardless of content, ya don't simply reuse a Mos Def beat

I didn't make the song, Shea did and they got DJ premiere's permission to use the beat. The original by Mos Def is one of my favorite songs, and equally political. This time its the severe consequences of global warming, instead of structural racism in America.

y so serious ?

we don't even have to try it's always a good time !

I'm guessing you think this climate change stuff is a bunch of BS or something, and you are definitely not alone. I understand, the mainstream media does a fine job at casting doubt into the public's mind, and if you accept the scientific predictions, the future looks pretty scary and depressing. But I invite you to consider why the mainstream media, and politicians have an incentive in maintaining the status quo, and keeping people from believing the deeply depressing reality we are facing.

The media is a for profit business, and corporate advertisers are its customers. Corporations pay the 5 major media companies (there were hundreds only decades ago) to run ads, then we the people watch the news and the ads for free, and buy stuff from the Corporations. Since the media is paid by corporations, it must cater to them. The customer is always right. What corporations want is as many people watching their ads as possible, and what they don't want are news stories that will hurt their bottom line. So when the scientists tell the media about the dire consequences of our fossil fuel addiction, they may want to report it, but they will lose their biggest customer, the energy corporations (and all the other advertisers, because they know its better for them to act as one group instead of selling each other out).

Politicians are in a similar bind. Many of them are aware of the very serious problems facing this country and planet, but two things stop them from taking necessary actions. In order to get elected they need the monetary support of corporations to finance their campaigns, and they need the votes of the people to get into office. Any politician who tried to drastically reduce America's fossil fuel use would not be able to get enough campaign funding, and the people wouldn't vote for them because the mainstream media is telling us that the way we are doing things right now is just fine, and nobody wants to make the changes we desperately need unless they have to.

Scientists on the other hand, are for the most part, free from this bind. They are sponsored by their universities, and bound to the scientific method which is based on observation and evidence, and eliminating any bias. By using this method they have brought us all of our great technologies and discoveries that we champion and now depend on. Now that they are the bearers of bad news its tempting to look for reasons as to why they would work together to deceive us.

I think that whenever somebody proposes radical changes, it is important to examine their motives. What do scientists have to gain from telling us that world is on the fast track to disaster? What do Corporations have to gain from telling us that everything is just fine?

Either way don't expect any solutions to come from the powers that be. Its going to take people facing the hard reality, and doing everything they can to solve the severe problems that we are up against. For anybody that is ready to do this I highly recommend you check out the transition movement. Its a blueprint for communities to drastically reduce their fossil fuel use, and create a local food supply/economy to be resilient from outside shocks. Its pretty new, but it is already having great results, and is growing fast.
