The ski binding and Knee injury poll/thread

I am curious if there is a correlation between the binding brand/model and knee injuries. i.e. ligament, meniscus. I am not trying to target or hate on any company. Just want to see what has happened to others. So list your bindings and your injury and lets see what happens...

myself- torn acl Salomon STH 12

this would never work. whats to say if that person maintained their binding properly, had their din/forward pressure set properly, etc.

I long ago thought about this. I thought long and hard about the pro's who had blown their knees and the bindings they rode. My conclusion was that the majority had blown knees on salomon bindings.
Hornbeck said it best when he said, 'if your gonna blow your shit your gonna blow it, doesn't matter, don't worry bout it..."

To make this semi-scientific, you also need to factor in the relative popularity of the bindings, like how many % of bindings sold are Salomon, Marker, etc.

You also have know the weight of the skier. If a kid weighs 110 lbs and he's got his bindings cranked to 12; there's your problem.

The majority of people I know, including my wife, who have torn knee ligaments skiing, did it pretty much the same way. They got tossed backwards and instead of letting themselves fall on their butts, they used their knees to try to leverage themselves forward. When you are leaning back with your knees bent, moving forward over uneven terrain, the torque on your knees is incredible. Hitting one bump or washboard while you're in that position is enough to destroy your ligaments.

IMO, if the study is done right, the number of injuries should directly reflect how effective or ineffective each binding is at releasing vertically from the toe.

i agree man, it is up to how the injury occurs. but its also up to if the rider knows how to set their shit up properly so they dont get injured, or at least minimize injuries.
I'm fairly light (65kg) and i ride Marker Jesters at 8 most of the time, its probs the highest I'd put them since I've felt the torque on my knees before they eject, they are supposed to be the best bindings for ejecting you properly though.

1st torn mcl on salomon 2002 s914; 1st torn acl on rossignol 2003 FKS 180; 2nd torn acl on 2006 rossignol fks 155.

partial ACL tear on dukes. just a weird landing, more of a tweak then an "oh fuck i just tore my ACL" moment, idk probably had din too high. not a problem though, my knee is okay now...i guess

ya i take my bindings to the shop they always seem to set the din at the right place to where my legs pop out when they need to pop out and they stay in when they need to stay in. no injurys for me but my right knee was pretty screwed up at the end though. i have griffons.

i fucked my knee up mojo 15s, awaiting results. (i am guessing its a partially torn MCL from what i know about the knee)

Obviously I understand that this thread won't produce a statistically sound finding. I was just curious what the other members of this site were riding when they injured their knees. Almost all the scenarios are going to be different. Its not like there is one set way to injure your knee.

i tore my acl with some jesters but it really had nothing to do with the binding it would of torn no matter what bindings i had in that situation

last year, torn acl and mcl on marker m900 shittiest binding, bought em w/o knowing anything about skiing but then again the din was like 6 and i was around 130, my 1st season riding park. within my 1st week back on skis after surgery i completely broke the bindings doing 3's haha

Tore mine on Jesters.
By the way, will people stop talking about all the little shit that goes into tearing your acl? Yes, there are going to be inconsistencies but those tend to even out as you get more data and no matter what you can see trends. So stop fucking saying, "it all depends on the settings and skiers weight" and all of that shit.

tore my ACL and meniscus 3 years ago, riding look TT9s. DIN was set fairly appropriately, I believe 10 or 11, im 155-160. edge caught right underfoot on the landing of a jump, and it flipped me around and hyper extended my knee.

i'm pretty sure you would need way more data sets than you think, and thus all the trends you would see would not correspond to reality.

MY TIPS FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR GUYS KNEES!!!!!!!!

I'm noticing alot of p 18s and high din bindings and I know most of you probably weigh between 140 and 175 lbs. I also know several people (I can name names) who have blown their knees when they didn't have to because their bingdings cranked way the fuck up because they were conserned with pre-releases. Here are my tips for you:

1. Your bindings are most effective in the middle 50 percent range of your din setting. Aka if your din is from 8-15 you should be riding them between 10 and 13. If they're at 8, your ski is likely to pre-release like crazy and if they're at 15 they are likely to stay on spesh in a low speed crash.

2. Make sure you have the proper forward pressure on your bindings. You have to continualy adjust this because hard impacts and vibrations will slolwy back off the screws. I do mine every few days to a week of riding. If your forward pressure is adjusted properly you will not have to worry about pre-release and you can ride the din your supposed to.

3. Not about your binding set up, but fucking stretch, that is so important and no one does it.

I'm 200lbs, I currently ride on 181 S4's and 178 S5's both with Rossi axial frees' (din range is 8-15) and my dins are set at 10.5! I don't even think I had one pre-release last season! And I've never had a knee injury from skiing (knock on wood) and I rode in the WSI big air, Triple Challenge and Midwest open and scored pow and park at 13 different places. On top of that all my old Axials 120s are set at a din of 8!

Hopefully this helps

Everybody's going to hate on me, but I've been riding the Line pivot 12's for 4 years now and they've been BOMBPROOF, and saved my knees a couple times in some shitty backwards falls. I swear by the damn things; everybody thinks I'm nuts.

I warrantied the first pair cause i stripped the lock that allows you to move the binding to fit different boots, cause everybody wanted to try them. 2nd pair = 4 years.

i ride some old marker m14 free binders, everyone says they're shit and i should get rossis or dukes/jesters
but i just keep my din on 6 and so far they havent ever ejected when i didnt want and they have allways ejected when i needed it...I'm not looking for higher din values after these binders; i find them right the way they are....
(i never tore an acl or hurt my knee ever...)
