The sad thing about the movie industry right now

well i mean. There are hundreds of movies put out each year and while people are still willing to spend the money on the projects themselves there aren't a whole lot of genres that haven't been done/ would captivate an audience for 2 hours.

Its kinda like the "back door sluts," movies... they just keep making new ones all with the same porn-stars and the same fetishes, after 9 films it gets pretty boring. btw back door sluts 5 was the best one.

it's about money. if you can put in minimum effort and still attract a pretty broad audience, why the fuck not? people are going to pay to see american pie 5, transformers 3, halloween 8, the fast and the furious 6. it's probably dead fucking easy for them to write a story based off previous movies, so costs are probably relatively low, and they still pull in a fuck ton of money.

i think it's stupid too, but that's the way the world works. it's the same reason one company comes up with a fucking new idea for a phone or ipad, and every other company has to rip it off and make a nearly identical version with like 1 different feature and a different name. it's easy and cost effective to branch off something that's already out there. is it shitty? yes. is it less creative? yes. is the world just one big cash sink? yes. is it going to change? no. do i still benefit from the entertainment it has provided me? yes.

just don't worry about this kind of shit. the world is driven by money, and that isn't changing.

very good point, but there are a ton of original indies out there if you're really that concerned about it...

StartFragment"I’m tired of the movies…… Yes, movies! Look at them – [A wave toward the marvels of Grand

Avenue.] All of those glamorous

people- having adventures- hogging it all, gobbling the whole thing up! You know what happens? People go to the movies instead of

moving! Hollywood characters are

supposed to have all the adventures for everybody in America, while everybody

in America sits in a dark room and watches them have them! Yes, until there’s a war. That’s when adventure becomes available

to the masses! Everyone’s dish,

not only Gable’s! Then the people

in the dark room come out of the dark room to have some adventures themselves-

Goody, goody! – It’s our turn now, to go to the South Sea Island – to make a

safari – to be exotic, far-off! – but I’m not patient. I don’t want to wait till then. I’m tired of the movies and I am about

to move!”

It's all about consumption. And since we are in a kist system and that the aim number ONE is to sell, no need to make awesome and new original stuff, put a gun a hero and a woman, people will go to theatre !Having said that, it's exactly the same in the music industry, i't so sad to see how music has become (if we can still call this music though). Nowadays it is clearly impossible to see a recent/ commercial singer being listened in 50 years from now. I mean, The Rolling Stones just celebrated their 50 years.. I mean 50 YEARS and their music is still... TIMELESS !

i find the inclusion of harry potter to be funny.

The book was an original product...and there were 7 of them. Did anyone think they'd make 2 or 3, then stop?

Plus this is all retrospective bullshit. How many times have you sat down and declared "boy, that was an absolutely tremendous film."

The years have really whittled down to the best.

Not saying that you should listen or not. My point was that today, everything you see is brief, if one idea (music, advert, movies, items...) doesn't work out, the next week you have something else to replace it. That's how it is now.

if there weren't so many run of the mills unoriginal ones, the truly special ones wouldn't stand out as much.

and also, if every single one was totally original and awesome, i'm betting we'd have a lot less movies to watch. movies are works of art for sure, but they're also simply entertainment and money makers

Special Effects though awesome are the decline of cinema, that and 3D. Now we rely on these things rather than actual acting and talent. Tis a pity

2011 wasn't a great year for movies, we all know that. But 2010? Sick year. Inception, Social Network, the Fighter.

Zappa was smart beyond his years, but I think if he were alive now he would be impressed at the amount of creative and unique music that can be released via internet, now sure the amount of people that hear is a lot less, but at least its being released somehow.

That's why I hate it when people say music used to be better. I say hogwash. Music is as good as its ever been. Music hasn't gotten worse, taste has.

The fighter was one of the most boring and poor films I've ever seen, The Social Network on the other hand was really interesting and just great.

it costs so much to make/produce a movie and if you don't break even, let alone turn a profit, your fucked. that's why movie makers recycle the same shit cause they know its a safe investment and will make money. no more room for risk-taking in hollywood, thats why we are in the midst of a scripted tv renaissance

That's not the movie industry, that's the consumers. There are plenty of original movies out there, you just have to look for them. It's not the industries fault we spend our money remakes and franchises

The most successful movie genre has always been sequels.

That list is wildly misleading. It just picks some specific years that work for its message. If we look at 1982, only 3 of the top 10 grossing films weren't adaptations or sequels:

1. ET

2. Tootsie

3. An Officer and a Gentlemen

4. Rocky III

5. Porky's

6. Star Trek II

7. 48 Hours

8. Poltergeist

9. Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

10. Annie

1972 was "worse". Only 1 of the top 10 grossing films was an "original":

1. The Godfather

2. The Poseidon Adventure

3. What's Up Doc

4. Behind the Green Door

5. Deliverance

6. Deep Throat

7. Jeremiah Johnson

8. Cabaret

9. The Getaway

10. Fritz the Cat

nah deadly serious, nothing about it was good imo, but I watched the social network multiple times,

also, there are only 7 harry potters. 8 if you want to count the 2 separate parts of the 7th movie. And yea they continued making them, they were books made into movies. Did you want them to make like the 4th movie and then be like "fuck it"?

I really wish you were trolling but i don't think you are. The rolling stones are fucking like one of the best bands of the modern times. The influence they had and the music they put out. I mean that is just your opinion and I respect it but to say it fucking sucked is a little hard to stomach.

I didn't say wrong, I said worse. There is a fundamental difference.

Although in all fairness, past decades had plenty of crappy pop music. The Jonas Brothers are hardly different from the early Beatles.

stupid list, 2011 had a ton of great movies!

Tree of Life

The Muppets movie was fucking great

Drive was kinda cool

Of Gods and Men

The Artist

A Séparation

and 2012 is gonna be very great

I must disagree then. A person's right to an opinion is my same right to ridicule that opinion relentlessly.

If someone were to genuinely claim Justin Beiber has more musical talant than DeBussy I'm not going to agree for the sake of being politically correct. I'm going to call them a mouth-breather and spank the back of their head, despite the "validity" of their opinion.

why would sequels be cheaper to make?

The Fast and The Furious - 38 millions

2 Fast 2 Furious - 76 millions

Tokyo Drift/Fast and Furious 4 - both 85 millions

Fast Five - 125 millions

Batman Begins - 150 millions

The Dark Knight - 185 millions

Dark Knight Rises - 250 millions

Fellowship of the Ring - 93 millions

The Two Towers/The Return of the King - both 94 millions

Philosopher Stone - 125 millions

Chambers of Secret - 100 millions

Prisoner of Azkaban - 130 millions

The Goblet of Fire/Order of the Phoenix - both 150 millions

Half Blood Prince - 250 millions

So movies with what appears to be no plot, absurd action/violence, and lots of death give you hope? Not saying i dont enjoy a good mindless action movie, but the OP's picture is more about blockbusters not just pointless action.

But what was the song in that trailer?

What isn't included in your numbers is the marketing budget. Most large movies have a marketing budget between 25 and 50 million dollars, and sequels already have much of their marketing done by their prequel. So studios don't need to spend as much money marketing sequels as they do for "original" films.

hmm im pretty sure a movie still need a lot of advertising/marketing even if it's a sequel.

e.g a lot of people never heard about the matrix sequels, yet they still cost like double to produce.

I do get what you're saying though that a good movie won't need as much hype for its sequel
