The Road Bike Thread

Here is a Peugot that I just found at the dump, and slapped a set of Shimano wh-r600's that my dad had laying around. The things are probably way too light as this is gonna be my commuter bike once ready, so if you need some 26" wheels, hit me with a pm. Anyway, I've been trying to locate a Shimano/SRAM compatible cassette, but only the end of the hub is actually the right size. My 8 speed shimano fit perfectly... For a half inch before stopping. Hope someone has any idea what to do.904751.jpeg904752.jpeg

Been a minute so I might as well show off my baby. Supersix Evo Hi-Mod, eTap, 303s, Cannondale’s proprietary crankset. Can anybody name the island this is taken from?

HMU if you wanna ride in the Portland, OR area - CX season is wrapping up and it’ll be time to stack up base miles soon.

Look into a gravel bike. Great for commuting but will go anywhere. Every major manufacturer has a gravel line these days.

Started commuting 5 years ago to work. Began lightly only doing it once or twice a week. At that time it was a 14 mile round trip commute. I have been increasing steadily since then. I moved a little closer, now it is a 10 mile commute but it is rare if I don’t get 4or 5 days commuting in. Currently riding a 90s era specialized allez that I garbage picked.

Anyone have any experience with Canyon? Mountain or road. Going to get a new roadie by February and if the size I’m looking for is in stock I think I’m gonna go with them.

No personal experience, but I’ve heard lots of good things. The only thing I’d be wary about is your local shop refusing to work on them because of their sales model, but really if they aren’t willing to do that then their customer service isn’t great. You thinking Aeroad or Ultimate?

Oh man. I didn’t even think about the sour bike shop that might not work on it. But like you said, they would be bad customer sevice anyways if that’s the case.

I’m really thinking about going ultimate. I need to do some research and conparisons on geometry to make sure I get the right size. I signed up for their mailer in June to notify me when the one I want is in stock, still not in stock and I’m ready to pull the trigger, so we will see. I could get a tarmac instead.

Nice, keep the thread updated on what you decide to do! What're you thinking for wheelset, drivetrain, etc.?

Apparently there's a canyon shop now out here in carlsbad california so I'd love to check that out.

I moved out to san diego in June and lemme tell ya it's amazing to be able to ride in late december without extra layers or gloves. And so many more bike lanes and shared roads out here compared to where I came from. I gotta get in on some group rides though that's something I still haven't done

Nothing like a good group ride to make you bonk hard AF.

I ride a 2017 Canyon CF SLX 9.0 Team. The bike is amazing, geometry is perfect for me, and for the price you get a lot of ‘bang for your buck’. However, the aftercare from Canyon direct isn’t so great. I had a crash after owning the bike 4 months and cracked the seat stay, Canyon wanted $1400 to replace the frame, and I’d have to strip the bike and ship the damanged frame back to them (to Germany, from UK), all at my cost. They said that because the bike was less than 12 months old, $1400 was a ‘special price’!! In the end I got the carbon repaired by a local ex-professional rider turned carbon engineer for $300 and the bike is good as new.

Not had any issues with shops refusing to service either. If you have a good local shop you can use that will service for you, then I’d certainly recommend a Canyon, but just hope nothing goes wrong, or it will cost you!

Thats a great looking ride. Bummer on the cracked seat stay and them not helping out.

Question I have with the one piece stem/bar. How do you make adjustments on the drop/ reach?

You can’t. Obviously you can adjust the seat all you want, and I guess you could remove a spacer to drop the stem slightly, but that’s all. That’s why it’s important the bike geometry is right for you. I was lucky in that my bike was available as a rental for RCC members in Rapha stores, I’m not a member, but I went to my local clubhouse and tried it out before I bought it.

Yeah, I guess thats the only risk for me to get one. But at the end of the day I can compare the geometry to bikes I have ridden/owned and if somehow the bars dont work I can just put a regular set on with a stem.

The price is too good for what you get.

Wow those look great. And speaking of gravel... I love my aero Blue but now I want something almost the opposite not carbon that I can be tough on, commute to work with and go to the store and jump curbs, maybe some hardpack...

I'm in san diego so there's not much actual gravel or weather and I feel like I'd use it 70% pavement. So far been looking at bikes like the breezer radar, salsa journeyman, surly crosscheck and some others. Any other ideas or suggestions?

Focus Mares AX (aluminum version of what I posted as my gravel bike), although I don't know if there's a difference in clearance. Kona Jake the Snake might be a relatively affordable option as well. If you're looking for something fancier, there are tons of custom frame builders working with steel/aluminum/titanium. People talk shit about Specialized and Trek for their dealer practices, but a Trek Crockett or Checkpoint (the latter has more relaxed geometry and more tire clearance) or Specialized Crux would probably work well for you. I've also heard great things about the Cannondale Topstone. A final option, if you're willing to look at carbon, is the Thesis OB1. You're pretty spoiled for options in this segment - just do a little research and figure out what bike lines up most accurately with what you want, and you'll probably be happy. Wheelset and tires do make a huge difference here.

Appreciate the recommendations! Hadn't looked into any of those and they all seem like great options.

I test rode (on pavement streets around the shop) a breezer radar and surly straggler last week. Both felt good and fun but think I realized that right now I can't justify adding a new second bike into the mix. Now I'm trying to decide if I should just get a craigslist beater for going to the beach and casual cruising, OR potentially sell my road bike and get a gravel style with 2 sets of wheels/tires...

Had 2 weeks of beginner velodrome lessons so far and it's awesome. Using a rental 2015 felt tk3 but will need my own bike if i go on to the level 2 class... anyone have insight on track bikes? What should I look for in new or used ones?
