Finally finished building up my new steed.

Microshift Centos black 10spd group

Zipp 300 crank

Shit shimano wheels

Need to work on the position, thinking I'll get a more aggressive stem and maybe move the hoods a bit although I prefer them a bit higher on the bars than most people.

Yeah, they give him extra horsepower. Same with those handlebars... Give like +4 horsepower right there, plus you can bull somebody to death.
 
Little background here. I live in an area that is extremely popular with biking (Newton, Dedham, Medfield, Dover, Needham MA) and have always been interested in doing it myself. I finally have a job that allows me a little extra income to afford a bike. I obviously would need to purchase the whole getup (helmet, shoes?, bike, clothes, etc) and was hoping for some NS advice.

So can people school me in what I should be looking for?

Focus on the right fit bike and a helmet first. See how much you like it before getting clothes and shoes. I bought my first road bike in May and just wear rolled up trail pants and a short i'd wear working out to ride. Pretty comfortable. It's so fun and every time I ride I feel like a little kid.

I got a great deal on a leftover 2013 trek 1.1. I love it and no complaints. Lots of people say it's not worth spending under a grand but I did and it rides great. I'm sure if I was racing I would notice a difference. However, going for the occasional 15-20 mile ride it's awesome.
 
does anyone use the app Strava? just got it and its really sick! looking for people to follow/followers.
 
Picked up a 2013 trek 2.1 madone today. So excited. Now I just have to get used to clipless pedals and shoes. The cons of having a stone driveway right now.
 
Just took out my new bike and shoes for a lil learning session. I can't wait to take it on a real ride. It is going to be awesome.
 
Bought this last year. I try and get out as much as possible but work doesnt always cooperate. I love riding thru Manhattan early on Saturday or Sunday mornings before the crowds and cabs clutter the streets. I need to get my mileage up though.

I have good bike shorts. My seats just dont fit me very well, and I've known this for a while. Doesn't help that my commuting bike is super rigid. I've been riding my Fuji around way more often simply because it's not as rough of a ride.
 
Went on my first ride, just 9 miles but boy it was fun. Completely different set of leg muscles though. Only went about 15 mph for the ride.

I guess it depends on what you want to do. If you're looking for all out biking performance, some kind of a fitted jersey, and fitted short would be your best bet. If you're concerned about being spandex clad, not wanting to feel nearly naked, then there are other options for some more loose fit jerseys or tees, and loose fit shorts. Whatever style of short you choose though, I'd suggest getting something with a chamois. They make a world of difference for back and ass pain, and you'll be able to ride far more comfortable day to day.

Personally I ride in a jersey with loose fit shorts.

I have no qualms about spandex, 11 years of ski racing will do that.

Anyone have any good brand recommendations, or any brands to stay away from? I already have a pair of Bontrager Bibs and Cannondale jersey.
 
I've never liked Pearl Izumi, but that might just be because the pair of shorts I got never fit me well. I would have had to downsize, and in that case, they were too high up on my leg and didn't work right. Their socks were fine, and I'm sure their other stuff works great, others like them, but I never had a particularly good experience with their stuff really.

Castelli is what I usually wear, and Sugoi has some decent gear. Rapha is kinda overpriced, but still great.
 
I'm looking to get my hands on a road bike, I've been living in a city for awhile now and I would rather ride than walk everywhere. I would be using it strictly for joy riding and commuting. I have a budget of around $200-$300 (the cheaper the better). I'm looking to get a used one off of craigslist, unless anyone has any better suggestions?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent cheap commuter road bike?

56 inches I think if you are proportionate. I am about the same and I think that is what I bought. (Could be completely off)

Yeah, I'd agree with 56 if you're proportionate. If you have a longer inseam on your pants (like a 33 or 34 - without rolling the bottoms) then you might want to bump up to a 57 or even 58. If you're more like a 30 inseam, then you can bump down to a 54, especially if you're flexible (I'm 6' and both of my bikes are 54's - I also have a 30 inseam)

One rule, if you HAVE to go at getting a bike blind (or if you're buying second hand and find a great deal on craigslist or something), always go shorter by a size or so if possible - you can make a bike longer, but you sure can't make it shorter.

I got a Raleigh Revenio 1.0 last friday, it's my first road bike and I've fallen in love with it- I use two locks on it wherever I go. From sprinting 30 on 6 mile commutes home, to barely working when i bike with my friends. Already put somewhere around 150 miles on it. I did 30 miles this morning around some trails in Minneapolis, looking to do some longer solo rides (I did 77 in a group two weeks ago on a commuter). I put in 15 after work today. Great way to start the weekend. this was the first week in a while where i haven't been too busy with work or other things that I was able to get two rides in in one week. might make it three if i can get out on sunday.
 
Thinking about buying a Specialized Allez Sport, anyone have any experience with them? I've only read good things about it online. I'm just looking for a semi-cheap, entry level road bike that will last me a while and won't be a piece of shit.

A lot of people seem to like them. Can't go wrong if you ask me. Make sure it fits though

Ended up getting this Fuji Roubaix because a local shop gave me a pretty sick deal, $1319 marked down to $799. Not the best components, but I'm loving it so far, and went 28 miles yesterday down the beach with my dad and had an awesome time.

Probably the best good roadbike bike under 1000$ you're going to find...

I mean, you might find some better models that would be a previous year bike out there for cheaper, but that bike is fucking awesome for the price.

Another great one would be the CAAD8 from Cannondale. Same geometry as their top end carbon frames, but it's made out of Aluminum. It's a fantastic training bike, about as affordable as the Allez, and pretty similar. Groupsets they throw on them out of the factory tend to be about the same sorta stuff as well.

Personally, having ridden both, I'd go with the Allez just because it's a bit stiffer ride, but the CAAD8 would be a little better for cruising with.

can someone recommend me a road bike...

-5-11 +160 lbs.. don't think that matters

-I try ride about 1k miles a year

-20-30 mi per ride

-for mostly flat train as of right now but very likely am moving westward to the mountain this fall

-no more than $1.5k

As of right now i have a $400 cx bike from bikes direct made by "gravity" which is their store brand. It's worked well for college and managing commutes, even in the snow/ice/gravel/beat up streets and on steep hills, but i now really want to look into a road devoted bike
