The Revenant

Anyone else super fired up to see this movie? I have tickets bought for the Monday after Christmas and I'm planning on checking it out this evening since it was leaked and I heard the quality is pretty good online. I'm gonna definitely see it in theaters at least once and I usually never stream leaks, but this one cannot wait.

Anyone watch it yet? I've heard nothing but awesome things from critics so far and Hardy/DiCaprio are the best out so it looks incredible.

Fun Fact: I went to school with Grace Syme, and I used to play on the same badminton team as her... It was crazy following her success to where she is now! Such a nice girl

Don't know if I'll get in trouble for this, but I love this time of year because almost EVERY movie worth watching leaks online due to people sending in DVD quality movies to be cut for the oscars. (Or at least I think thats why it happens) either way

The site also has the hateful 8, Creed, Legend, Joy, Heart of the Sea, all there with DVD quality.

do you have to put in your cc info?

Movie was badass and both beautiful and brutal at the same time. However, I am kinda bummed that I didn't just wait to see it on the big screen. I'm going to see it on Monday in theaters regardless, but I feel like the first viewing of that movie is very deserving of the biggest screen you can watch it on. I dunno, just my thoughts. My impatience conquers all reasoning usually.

Maybe I'll watch the leaked version since I probably won't end up seeing it in theaters. The story of Hugh Glass is so badass I can only imagine this is as well

Fun fact: Grace Dove, who plays DiCapprio's wife, was my buddy's first girlfriend. We used to work together at a summer camp in northern BC. Small world, I'm stoked out to see where her career can go.

Who is your buddy?

Soooo excited about this movie, I hope it doesn't disappoint. I remember hearing the true story of Hugh Glass in a wild west documentary I watched a while ago and it was insane - I should find and rewatch that before I see this movie, it's always better when you know a bit of the real history behind it. I really like Leonardo DiCaprio, I really like adventure movies, and that historical time period is really interesting to me in general so I'm expecting this to be a good one.

A dude named Blake-John, you know him?

We went to the same school, and used to shred the same local hills (until he moved). Small world indeed!

Saw it in theaters in NYC last week. Seeing this movie on the big screen is absolutely surreal. The quality of cinematography is incredible and the acting is super intense. I'm actually pretty pissed at myself for watching it online first because seeing it in theaters was an experience. If you have the choice, definitely spend the few bucks and go see it. Un fucking real movie.

If DiCaprio doesn't win an Oscar for this then there is something seriously wrong with the academy.

His acting was great...but his acting is great in every movie he does. I don't know if this was the greatest he's ever done in a movie. I could be wrong but if I were Leo I wouldn't want an Oscar anymore. Everything he's done has been too good to put one above the rest.

He did win a Golden Globe for his performance but imho I don't think he'll get an Oscar.

The cinematography was phenomenal however. Great movie but a movie I could only ever watch once.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you watch it more than once?

Also, in terms of Leo's acting, I can see what you're saying. However, if you really look at it, that movie had a ton of emotion and serious acting coming out of him. The dude completely immersed himself in the role, put everything on the screen, and was a completely believable character. I think the Oscar should go to him just in terms of the effort, grit, and dedication he put toward that role.

If a movie is going to be 2 1/2 hrs+ it's got to blow my mind if I'm going to put in the time to watch it again. Also, that length of movie should (for me) have elements in it that aren't caught on the first viewing. A perfect example of the type of film that I could watch over and over is Interstellar.

I'm not at all saying it was a bad film because it's not. It was fantastic but it was a pretty straight forward, cut and dried, revenge film.

I'll agree that Leo expressed emotional and physical pain and rage perfectly, but I see him putting in the same amount of effort to express emotion, pain, glory, death, etc. in all of his films. In every single film Leonardo DiCaprio does, he gives it 110%.

I hear what you're saying completely.

Also, I saw Interstellar in theaters about 3 times and watch it every few weeks or so still haha. I thought that movie was unbelievably good and beautifully made.

Thought it was amazing. Acting was really good and the cinematogrophy was raw and beautiful. Did a really good job capturing the harshness of the wilderness. Also, they dont make men like that anymore.

Can't decide what I enjoyed more about the movie... the fantastic acting or the unbelievable cinematography and scenic shots. Definitely one of the most beautifully made films I've seen in a while.

It reminded me of another great film,

Super entertaining and well-shot. I didn't think I had gotten that into the acting until the end scene where I was completely immersed in the characters.

I think overall the book was more entertaining since it tells more about Glass's story and fur trappers in that region and includes more than just him being hurt crawling around, but the movie was certainly a good adaptation with its own agenda

seems like a contradiction, you've only seen it once (presumably) and you are convinced that they're no elements that aren't caught on the first viewing. Technically speaking, you would have no way of knowing.

I guess you would be correct in saying that but I did see it again last night with a friend who hadn't seen it yet. I even thought about my post that you quoted and tried to find "hidden" themes or elements. Unfortunately, I didn't notice anything else. Like I stated before it's pretty cut and dried.

However, please don't assume I'm trying to say the movie is bad. As I said above, it is a great film.

spoilers...kind of

i thought it was good, but just started to get a bit too unrealistic. i know its a movie, and wasnt expecting a documentary, but how many times does he have to almost die? the part where he fell into the tree was where i started to think that

yeah he fucking rambo'ed that bitch. i thought the same thing. I wasnt really expecting it to be very realistic though because irl it happened a few hours from my house in SD, and he never actually killed the dick that left him. nor did I read anywhere that he had a son.

That opening scene of the attack was insane though. Awesome start to the movie, and i thought it was overall pretty freaking good. Classic Hollywood on the history of it though.

I totally agree. Overall impression of the movie was fantastic, but there were a few moments where I was left wondering "really...?"

I thought for sure that he was dreaming when he awoke to being ambushed and fell off the cliff and into the tree. I kept waiting for it to cut back to him and the indian chick camped out together, but instead the movie just proceeded from there.

Also, another hollywood vs reality issue I had was his broken leg. Not only was it broken, it was fucking mutilated. His foot was left dangling in the wrong direction. Then he just sleeps it off, wakes up and walks across a frozen tundra on foot? I don't think so..

Pretty much what happened though. You have to remember they cut down a 200 some day journey down into a movie.

So while he didn't just sleep it off....he crawled till he could stand. Guy was a freaking brute.

Okay, I should have included the fact that I went into this movie with 0 knowledge of the movie or the story it's based off. All I knew going into it was that Leo was a bad ass lost in the wilderness.

In that case, I think the movie did an awful job depicting a timeline. I was imagining a month long journey or less.

They did a terrible job doing it. I'll agree with you on that. If I hadn't known about it I would be in the same boat as you. I think the should have added in some time spacers throughout...like when he spent time with a native tribe. Would have made it much more realistic.
