The REAL Style Thread

Alright, at some recent point, 'tweak' style with a lot of extension kinda went out, minimal 'uniform' style went in. Why? Does it make sense? Is safetying while pulling your feet a few inches apart really that harder than crossing and blunting? This is happening exactly like with snowboarding, except with skiing, at least so far, there's fortunately not been a counter-movement that tries to reclaim pencil steeze as do-not-give-a-fuck cool or something (in skateboarding and snowboarding there'll always be some really messy-style lanky pros that honestly look slow and shitty but they'll have a bunch of hessians (or their homeboys) backing them up because dirty has dignity or something). Don't take sides, just talk about how things are going.

i like where skiing is now, personaly i would preffer a blunt to and crossed grab but the comfotable style that usually is upheld in skiing nowadays is awsome.

I don't really feel that it's out with tweaking it's just all people have different styles. Though personally a like the tweaking alot more than the 'nothing' style..

lanky steeze is where it's at.

'Lanky' steeze is hard to pull of, and personaly I like that...andrew renyolds(skate), corey smith(snow), anthony b.(Ski). I think that style is really awsome and different and it adds variety to our sport and others sports. But to have the smoothest style will always be what the majority goes for, and that's the way it should be.

Skiing is going off right now, and is proggressing really rapidly so I think we are going through a lot of trends quickly trying to find our 'niche' and trying to catch up with snowboarding, and every year our sport gets more exciting and a like different. I don't think it will be long before we have found that point and we consentrate completly on style.

I personaly enjoy the uncrossed tail(blunt) and uncrossed nose grabs.

In snowboarding the 'lanky' steeze you describe I think you are refering to Travis Parker and the whole robot food productions rider list...they are doing that stuff to have fun. To bringing different type of fun to a nindustry that is stuck on only having style and nothing else.

style is all about looking fluid, you dont have to be a monkey or be a mogul skier. its about looking like your meant to be in the air doing the trick your doing.

i think it has a lot to do with teh trick though to. i would personaly rather see a cork 3 uncrossed, or the saefty with ur feet apart, but something like a d-spin 7 looks better with a blunt crossed up.

about that snowboarding this though, i think they are just trying to get to many rotations in with their tricks now so they start the flip or whatever, grab for like 180 or 360 then lets so and start 'pencil' spinning like made...me no like that

if you are spinning hard, you should cross your skis. if you are arent spinning too big, bend over and steeze it up, like a man.

I think that having seperate grabs for different tricks is dumb. All grabs can look cool when done right

i think skiing is going to into a good direction

i pee on ur face but i dont care..

i take off ur little sisters underwear

shes only three so shes never seen a wee wee

so i told her it was a lollypop and the flavor was salty.

shoved in her mouth, it punctured through her cheek broke the glasses of that three year old geek.

r. kelly did the same but im not about to give him the blame cuz fucking littles girls is just my game

I think tweaking is nice lookin if it is done right. Mike Wilson shows the perfect example of this in RFA when he is hitting a table and throws the tweak really hard with his arm about 1/2 of the way through the trick, if not 3/4. But it is done smoothly while really tweaking, so its awesome. That kind of tweaking is really awesome, but the fast crap where some kid will try to throw a really tweaked mute in a .5 second air time off some small table is awful and so poopy to look at.

I'm all for super simple clean style like a wide safety, or blunt with no movement, but I'll also mix it up with the double twister spread off the biggest hit in the park every now and then just to keep the kiddies guessing.

Since I'm 6'3' I have to stay compact or I look like a goof ball, little kids have a little more leway as far as what looks good in the air.

Having re-read some articles lately on the ever-accelerating evolution of style, I can’t help but ask: Is the grab dying a slow death?

Like the daffy, twister, and backscratcher manoeuvres before them, the huntony, genie, japan, and liu kang grabs seem to be passé. In almost Darwinian fashion, the safety, tail, and mute grabs have persevered; incorporated into every trick imaginable.

Probably the most noticeable thing is the body position. The 'cool' grabs are compact, with bent knees and skis pulled close to the body. They are efficient, and are marked by their calmness and subtlety. Quite unlike the huntony or japan, which act as big, expansive exclamation marks (tweaks) on massive airs.

As this style moves out of the terrain park and more and more into the backcountry, even the cool grabs are missing. Yet, the compact body position, off-axis flips and spins remain. Is this simply a response to the fact that, on film, a grab's nuance is lost against the expansive backdrop of an Alaskan peak? Or is it something else entirely?

This past season, I noticed more reverse mutes and nose grabs in the park which seem to lean toward the tweaky end of the spectrum.

But, perhaps Shane Szocs' recent speculation is right: that a difficult trick with a stylish body position is the future.

I'm hoping for the return of the huntony...

The above was a draft preamble to an article I ultimately squashed last summer. It seemed somewhat relevant, so I thought I'd share.

^and even the japan grab has evolved from a huge kick/tweak to the compact ones a la henrik and tanner.

i think style revolves around comfort. the more comfortable you are doing something, the better you're going to look doing it. and i think these grabs the ifsa is talking about just feel more comfortable. personally i'm a lot more comfortable doing a mellow grab with little movement than i am doing a big tweaked japan.

im all about smoothness, if you can tweak a grab smoothly its awesome. if you're hucking spins off a small ass table though and trying to tweak grabs i agree it looks shitty.
