The Pope's view on skiing

I don't want to start some religious debate but thought this article was pretty cool, and goes to show even the pope supports the sport we all love...

The Pope praises skiing because it makes us 'feel small'

Pope Benedict XVI has given high praise to skiing, telling instructors on Monday that the sport developed the tenacity to overcome life's problems and reminded humans of their smallness in creation.

"Your engagement as 'ski masters' helps to boost certain capacities, for example steadfastness in pursing aims, respect for the rules, tenacity in confronting and surmounting difficulties," the pope said at the Vatican City.

"In all sporting activities, a person understands better that their body should not be considered an object ... but that it allows them to express themselves and establish relations with others.

"In this way, the balance between the physical and spiritual dimensions leads one not to idolise the body but to respect it."

Benedict said another advantage of skiing is that it is done in the mountains.

This is "an environment that in a special way makes us feel small, returns us to our true dimension as creatures, makes us capable of asking ourselves about the significance of creation, lifting our eyes to the top, opening ourselves up to the Creator".

The visiting skiers included Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, who is passionate about the sport.

i can't believe he touched on that whole subject without addressing the tall tee epidemic, obviously trying to steer clear of creating more controversy on that one

The pope is rockin teez taller than anyone on here, gotta know he represents!
In all seriousness though I think this is pretty cool. Some of the quotes he presented are some of the reasons i really feel like skiing is the best sport in the world. Grouse mountain is quite literally situated in my back yard and looking down on the city lights of Vancouver every time im shredding really puts life into perspective if that makes sense.
Cool to see some religious recognition none the less

PJP before he became pope was the priest at my Mom's church in Krakow, Poland. She received her 1st communion from him.

As for him being a huge skier, that is 100% true- my Grandfather needed to borrow skis and PJP overheard him talking to his friend about where to get a pair, and he just walked over, said "wait a minute" and came back with a pair of skis. Said bring 'em back in a week.

/claims.

The guy was super legit and an all around awesome dude, despite being the pope. Definitely reached out and touched a lot of people, and there's something to be said about that regardless whether I give a shit about his religious standing or not.

come on Olympic committee, we have the POPE on board with us...that's surely a sign that olympics skiing should be expanded?

Shame they couldn't coax him into saying "halfpipe skiing should be in for 2014. God told me it would be totally cool with him."
