So today the Pope (Pope Benedict XVI) handed in his resignation after 7 years at the "throne".

It's only the 3rd time in history that a Pope has resigned.

Pope Benedict XVI (78) claims he is of to older age to continue his duties.

I hear he is to take up much lighter duties in the mountains around Austria/Switzerland.

1. Pope Benedict XVI is 85, not 78 and2. it's not that he's just "too old", he says that at his age, he no longer has the necessary mental or physical strength to lead anymore

I think it's smart of him to resign at this point - it's not fair to his followers if he is unable to effectively perform his duties. The Pope's job is not an easy one - and It's probably the hardest decision he has ever made. I wish him all the best with his health moving forward. Hopefully the next Pope will be younger and won't have to go through an abdication process.
