The next big cult film

I'm calling it: Serenity. It tanked in theatres, and there are a total of something like 50 copies to be had in all lower mainland BC. The other several thousand (or however many they started out with, at least 140 per future shop store) are sold. Only way I got one was they found an extra box in the back or they'd have been gone by boxing day. Apparently lots of people are buying it, at least here, and I'm happy about that because it's a good movie. Is this just a Vancouver phenomenon?

It also seems to be difficult to come by good puffy jackets in size XL around here. Just an observation.

I totally thought that movie was straight to DVD release because my theatre where we work was scheduled to get it and never did so, meh? I kind of want to see it but not really.

Serenity is the conclusion to the cancled TV series Firefly for those of you who didn't know.

hey i have that, its pretty good but not reallt a cult film, another super good movie is THE ISLAND.. i just saw it last night and its Ill.,

The Island is definately NOT GOOD by all means, it's just a summer movie. Evan and Scarlett (HOTT) are so much better actors than that rubbish movie would show. But it was decent for a summer movie.

i thought it did well in theaters... the dvd tv series itself already had a cult following to begin with.

Pretty much... the thing is that cancelled TV shows just do not get to be made into movies unless there's something different about them. This thing has already had a huge cult following mostly owing to the DVDs... go on Amazon.com and check the reviews. For pretty much any TV show you'll find, there won't be more than a couple hundred reviews, IF that. For firefly, there are over a thousand. But that's not why the movie was so good... it's just that

a) The actors and the people who made the thing LOVED the characters, the world, etc.

b) 15 episodes was enough that they KNEW their characters really friggin' well

c) Whedon doesn't compromise with writing, sometimes he overwrites, but so much of the dialogue is unexpected that it can't be boring

d) They have one of the best, if not the best villain I've seen in modern movies (I measure modern as post-Blade Runner). He's a culture hero. It's like greek tragedy all over again. In space. With western influences. Sick?

e) The guy who did "unforgiven" was director of photography... you think the lighting might kick ass? Oh, I do. Practically no one noticed I'm sure, but there were points where cinematography was almost TOO good despite the lack of anything vaguely resembling a "budget".

I could probably reel off even more reasons. I just hope they make another one.

hm, i'm sorry to say that i didn't appreciate serenity that much. my dad has watched firefly, and he loved it, and think i may have enjoyed it more if i had the background of watching the show. as it was, i thought the plot was a little lacking and that they should have given more background information. but it was by no means a bad movie.

I agree that Serenity is going to be the next big cult film, probably with a series. The firefly fans are some of the most proactive fans out there, it's absolutely insane. It already has a cult following and I think with the movie coming out, more people are going to be exposed to it
