THE NEXT 40 YEARS!!!!

So all you kiddies who aren't old enough to vote seem to have an awful lot to say about the presidential candidates. Upon smoking some bowls and drinking some brews with good company our conversation drifted towards the upcoming election. Something we all agreed on was that one of the biggest issues which needs discussed among the candidates is one that is so far from the top of the list that you never seem to hear about it.

The issue lies in the Supreme Court. Two of the current judges are nearing retirement, and are essentially waiting until the new president is brought in to resign. This is very important. The supreme court upholds or brings down our laws. Any decisions they make are generally binding and semi-permanent, at least in the light of anything being decided on won't be revisited for many years to come. They decide what is law and what is not, and for all of the young people in this country, this should be your biggest concern.

Do you really want McCain coming in and choosing the next to Judges who will aid in deciding how you're allowed to live your life for the NEXT 40 YEARS?!?!

This is the issue I would like to hear the candidates debate about, because really more than anything else, how the supreme court is set up after this next election is going to steer American history in one direction or another.

Discuss.

Think about it dude. Can you imagine who mccain would put in the supreme court. we'd be so fucked. i guess you really don't care about america because you're basically ready to write off your civil liberties like you've had them for the last 8 years.

dumbass.

to be honest i think all 3 candidates suck, i dont want any of them, but having genrally speaking more conservative vewpoints, hillary or obama dont suffice to my need, if obama wins, huge tax increases are gonna occur and with the market and income of people today, its gonna hurt everyone including urself. hillary is just a stupid bitch, end of discussion on her. i just think with obama being as young as he is and lack of experience arent enough to run this country. maybe in some years ahead obama would be more accredited for the postion but for now, in my eyes he doesnt make the cut. what do u think obama or hillary will do for us? and just to let u knw i am old enough to vote.

really all of the candidates up for election suck...

but yeah the supreme court is almost just as big as the presidency. not sure about what to say just yet...i'll wait for a few more replies

Hey guys, thanks for discussing the issue I presented and not discussing your views of how the candidates will be at the presidency.

OOPS! my bad, you DID cover your stupid views of their overall capabilities as president, something that has nothing to do with what i'm talking about.

yep. its a slow process, but it is happening. and according to the government, its all for our benefit. one more thing, about tax increases; why does it bother people to pay more taxes? these same people are the ones who complain about lack of funding in nearly every aspect of their government funded lives, so really, paying more taxes benefits you more. unless of course, you are a hermit, or the elected officials make poor choices.

hmmm let me think here...

FUCK. YOU.

i'm pretty sure nobody has to reply to your damn thread, and they can talk about whatever the fuck they want in it. you are an asshole, that sure isn't the way to get people to discuss a topic. you should damn well know that almost no thread on NS stays on topic very long. and that sure isn't the way to get it to stay on topic.

oh i guess i didn't talk about the topic again. oh well, maybe if you didn't bitch about things...

Thanks for being so on target with your principles. Because you claim "nobody has to reply to my damn thread and they can talk about whatever they want in it" you're just further showing that nobody on NS is capable of an intelligent discussion. (I realized this 3 years ago, but I thought maybe a few of the people of worth on here might have something to say.)

I wish you'd execute yourself.

ive been on this website for 5 years now. and im starting to not like it more and more, which really really sucks.. the hate on these forums is just getting ridiculous. and now some kids are even going to the extreme of saying please dont hate, and then guess what, some kid gets mad and hates on the person for writing that. wtf is up with this bullshit. why cangt people stay on point and keep more of the sarcasm to a minimum. everybody takes shit so personal. people gotta relax a bit. FUCK.

"Do you really want McCain coming in and choosing the next to Judges"

why not have Mccain choose the Judges? congress still has to approve them, and it wouldnt be the first time they have blocked a conservative judge.

That is a valid point. The problem lies in the fact that you have to look at mccains set of ethics and morals, which imo aren't that super. He could still get a conservative judge in with congresses approval. They could block it, but its not like if they block one conservative judge he won't try to put another one in their place until they find one guy who is less bad than the first 3 and you still end up with some old db who really has no interest in preserving the ideals this country was founded on for the youth in this nation.

i'm perfectly capable of having an intelligent conversation. you know i realized 3 years ago NS was doing fine and lately i think it's people like you that thing they are god or something that are fucking it up. you think because you've been here for so long (i didn't check your profile i can't get a year) that you are some authority? you know i wouldn't have had a problem if you would of said "it would be nice to stay on task" or something along those lines. no, you have to be a fucking smart ass about the whole ordeal, personally i think it makes you look like an asshole. and this probably makes me look like one as well, but personally i can care less. and that's such a badass last statement, i love wishing death on people. oh and last time i checked, you don't execute yourself dumbass you get executed by others.

I want Obama or Hillary to win, and no way do i want McCain in office and to choose our supreme court. If he becomes president i think we might be screwed. Just my opinion.

are you talking about how he had his arms broken, teeth pulled, and the shit beaten out of him. and then, when he was offered to be set free, because he was an admiral's son, he said no way! not until everyone he served with was set free. so he chose to set and rot in a prison cell, because he would not take a short cut out of a POW camp.

any man that would go threw that, and brush it off as nothing, has a excellent set of morals and ethics in my book.

go do some research into what he endured in that POW camp, and then imagine being given a free pass out, because you had a certain last name.

I was thinking more along the lines of you laying in a guillotine, and holding the rope to the blade and letting it go on yourself. Execution being related to the method, since a guillotine is pretty exclusive to executions, not suicides. I should have been more clear.

I don't think I'm god btw. :)

do you have any real opinions on why mccain shouldn't be president, otherwise, i could just say, i dont want Barack, or hilary to be president, because i think might be screwed.

if everyone on NS is dumber than you and they are not capable of an intelligent discussion, then why are you on here if your just gonna bash people, kinda a dick thing to do

With the long process of interviews, background checks, and multiple aprovals and much more that it takes to become a supreme court judge i don't think that any person who is able to recieve the job will "screw" our nation over. We will get different judges depending on who gets elected but with the long process to becom a supreme court judge balanced with having there be a whole panel of judges, not just the two who are leaving... i do not think this is the most important issue.

also, to the original poster, if you actually cared about your thread you would respond to the people trying to say their opinions not get into a super duper rad e-fight about suicide, execution, and people who are to mean to stay on topic grrrr >:-(

I would rather have McCain pick the justices than Obama or Clinton. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that I really care about is affirmative action and I don't want Obama or Clinton appointing someone who things its ok, because its racism and its horribly unfair.

I'm just going to point out that that statement is oozing hypocrisy and you should probably stop (even though you're already behind).

i see where you get that it was hypocritical, but when i said it i didn't mean it like that. most people that were here 3 years ago aren't total assholes and act like they are above everyone else. but people like him that think since they've been here longer can be assholes, those are the ones i was talking about.

I can't get my head around American Politics. Can you even call it a democracy when there are only 2 ulimate candidates to vote for?

supreme court judges dont serve for 40 years.

dont talk about politics on NS youll just get a bunch of fucking idiots

hey dumbass do you even know the difference of who would be instated? You know republican judges all side with civil liberties and liberal judges all sign them away right? Granted there are a few party-tied caveats but in the general case conservatives will almost always side with strict interpretation. Im tired now but tmrw ill dig up the majority of the court cases the supreme court has handled in the past 8 years.

liberal judges all sign them away?

hmm lets see....gideon v. wainwright, miranda v. arizona, brown v. board of education...?

textualist approaches work both ways, dont drag partisan politics into this. the constitution doesn't expliciitly state a right to many important things. i dont want to get into an argument here, I seem to remember you saying you were a poli sci major so youd better be a freshman otherwise displaying that basic lack of knowledge is pretty pitiful

who the fuck cares anways, do you honestly want to hear opinions on relatively complex matters from a bunch of 15 year-olds?

It gets narrowed down to 2, but most people complain even though they don't vote until there are only two choices.

if mccain gets elected and appoints supreme court judges the fourth amendment will probably end up being repealed all together. 1984 here we come...

I really think the democrats are fucking them selves over right now, they dont have a set candidate yet, in which the republicans already have had one for almost 3 months now. I Believe that by the time the democrats pick a candidate the election will happen, or they will be retards and the person that looses the primary's will split to another party like when Teddy Roosevelt went to the moose party and Taft was with the republicans, which split the vote, overall the least popular candidate, Woodrow Wilson won the nomination because of the greed of Teddy.

P.S.- I cant vote but I would go for McCain

Obama will tax those who will be financially fine after paying taxes: the rich. IMO it makes sense, and its the only way to fix our shitty economy rather than go super conservative right now. In times of prosper, it seems to me that conservative economics work better, but they are shitty in times of slump and recession. We need to tax the rich and make better products that will sell well internationally.

Sorry to be mean but when you come up in here and insult my intelligence i have to come back at you with the titanic. In both brown v board of education and miranda v arizona, the presiding justices were 5/9 republican and you could argue 6/9 conservative. Moreover, the Chief Justice was Earl Warren a republican and strong conservative. dont gimme bullshit next time.

no offense but do you honestly have any idea what youre talking about whatsoever? Our exports are at record highs and if you read any economics text book, theyll tell you that the ONLY way to go is conservative economics. theres no such thing as liberal economics. "Liberal economics" is socialism. and if anything has been proven in the world, its that socialism does not last and will never work.*

*Except to minor degrees as in canada.

those are liberal issues, sorry

thats exactly my point, being liberal/conservative doesnt have much to do with it.

what?! how are those in anyway liberal issues?

-Gideon vs Wainwright was about upholding strictly his 6th ammendment rights

-Miranda vs Arizona dealt with the police of the state of Arizona violating Mirandas 5th and 6th ammendment rights

-Brown vs Board of education was a decision to uphold the 14th ammendment of the constitution.

Any time a court deals with existing ammendments, civil rights, and upholding EXISTING ammendments of the constitution, it is a CONSERVATIVE case. If the case ever deals with "implied" denial of a civil right or "implied" details of the constitution, then it is a LIBERAL issue- especially if a ruling gives the government more power.

For example,

Mcculloch v Maryland is a liberal case. In this case, the court ruled that congress had the "implied" power to have a national bank.

ill just say that I don't want to discuss politics with someone who arrived in that mindset by "smoking a few bowls" and drinkin some brews. you lost all credibility there man.

i think i would be ok with raised taxes as seeing our national debt is quite large and our spending on national defense is pretty high. we're kinda stepping on people to help others out... kinda seems weird.

our spending on national defense isnt that high. our spending on health and human services takes up more than half of the 2008 budget.

its all relative dude. and theres no way you can talk about this stuff like its fact. most of the stuff that is being debated is opinion. i've just always been more liberal no big deal.

uhh its not all relative... numbers are absolute. Health and human services combined make up exactly 56% of our total federal budget. Of that, 20.2% of it is social security alone!!! We spend annually, 586.1 billion dollars on social security! We spend almost 300 billion on fucking welfare so lazy people can have 12 children while not working a job. Can you guess how much we spend on defense? We only spent 548.8 billion on all military expenses combined in 2007. Thats about 19% of our budget. Now if 56% of our budget is spent on useless shit and only 19% is spent on military, how can you say we spend too much? Even Canada and France, two peace loving countries spend about 16% and 17% respectively of their budgets on defense. And were at war!

well we have different budgets from canada and france. and i'm just saying that i feel like we spend too much on national defense. in my opinion i feel like we could do other things with some of this money. other more important things.

like what? how bout we take all of the money in social security, a system long since outdated, a socialist system nonetheless, and use it on something rahter than it being wasted? How bout we get rid of welfare (a system long outdated, a socialist system nonetheless) and use that on something else? Every country has National defense of some sort, and it is absolutely necessary. But not every country has social security and welfare, two money drains that do little to no good in the long run.

Again, alex whateveryourname is i hope youre reading this cuz this is a perfect example of how liberal economics can mean doom for the world.

Our national defense isnt that big of a spending hole. How could you feel like we spend too much on national defense when you dont realize the other parts of our budget? I cant think of many things that are much more important than national defense. Defense is what allows us to do other things not the other way around. However, i can think of tooooooooooons of better uses for a combined 900 BILLION dollars tht could be used else where other than feeding 15 people households because the mothers or fathers are either abandoning or are crack addicts.

you cant get your head around it cuz youre an idiot. There are 2 ultimate candidates to vote for because of a weeding process known as, well the election! It starts out with unlimited candidates which gets narrowed down to maybe 5-8. Then people vote in primaries or caucuses to narrow it down to two. theres voting at each step along the way. If we had like 8 candidates at the final stage, we'd know so little about each one and the pressure isnt always on each candidate.
