The New England backcountry thread

There are literally hundreds of trails all along the kangamangus and route 16 that no one hikes in the winter, and are very bad ass to ski.

is magic mountain still open? if its closed thatd be a cool little tour/backcountry spot.

pretty sure mt ascutney in central VT closed down a few years back too. theres definately some badass terrain up there.

My ski club and I are going to do an avalanche course on Mt. Kahtadin if anyone wants to go... end of january... and will be a 5 day trip hiking around the area...

pm for interest...

Ascutney has closed, watch out though, the local sheriff is a bitch about hiking (as it is still private property). If you do, drive past the parking lot and park near the condos, and skin up on the right side there so you're less visible. Back when it was open, Ascutney had some of the best/steepest stuff around, if they get any good snow this year you could get some reaaaallly fun runs in.

Im thinking about going up after a good snow storm and hiking the dark side glades. Do you think me and a few friends could get away with building a backcountry booter up on blind faith or sidewinder?

its too bad they take hiking so seriously.. such a sick spot with so much terrain and its useless..

You could definitely get away with dark side. A booter on blind faith or sidewinder would probably be ok too, people still own the condos there so worst case you could just claim that your staying in one of them and most likely get a slap on the wrist.

I haven't experienced getting caught firsthand, but I know that the local sheriff is a huge douche, and a few of my dads friends have gotten yelled at for skinning in previous years. I can ask him about more specifics/if its still as sketchy as it was when it had just closed down next time I see him if you want. I think as long as your not too obnoxious and dumb it would be pretty easy to get away with.

Also, concerning Magic, even if it is open (not entirely sure if it is this season..) they're one of the few mountains that is totally ok with you earning your turns, so hike/skin away!

Anyone ever been back here before (backside of Lafayette/Lincoln)? Saw it from a hike this fall and it looks sick

^seen that before and from my winter hiking experience those face the wrong direction and do not hold snow well, you would also have to hike all the way back up that after the run because there is no way out from the bottom

If anyone skis sugarbush and knows anything about the lines in slide brook off of mt Ellen, or slide brook in general and would be interested in having some more people to ski with, let me know.

if you look in the background of this picture taken from killington you can see a cat track that lets killington get cats to pico. if you go up to the top of pico and go down that and drop into the woods at any point and have some good skiing. you just have to know how to get back up

Hopefully these storms coming in put a bit of snow on the ground, I'm looking to bum around a bit in VT post-christmas

Sunday river held up and now we got a base in the woods. Its super heavy though, you can't initiate a turn but on the back side of the mountain its firming up with the wind exposure.

Not sure exactly where it is in NH, I think it was about thirty minutes away from Waterville Valley, coming from Maine, but there were a few decent looking spots that could certainly be traversed and skied, albeit the snowpack may be somewhat sketchy and I'm not sure how deep the base is.

thats the great gulf right? we hiked the whole presi range via crawford path and then i think it was the gulfside trail and looking off to the right looked gnarly as fuck. plus youd have to hike or skin 8 or so miles out on the trail down in the base of the gulf. has meatheads ever done it or anyone else?

bc in vt is skiing well. Went on a walk about off a snowshoe trail near stowe. crazy good powder turns were earned and only crossed our own tracks. average of 50" or so base with top 15" being light and fluffy on N and E aspects.

wildcat enough said.. you can find sick sidecountry stashes as well as inbounds shit tht always has a ton of snow that only locals no about
