The Micro Brew Thread

Slowly turning into one of the craft beer people. Unfortunately search bar could not find me a NS list of whats good. Thought it might be fun to start a list of NS's favorites. Right my favorites are Founder's Breakfast Stout, Kettlehouse Cold Smoke, and Hew Holland Tangerine Space Machine IPA.
 
Dude it’s a fun world to explore. Beyond just stopping into all the little local joints when you travel there are some classics for sure.

Presumably you’re American and don’t see much Canadian beer?

10 Barrel is sick and they support all sorts of skiing and outdoor stuff. Trail Beer is a solid pale ale for the summit.

Ommegang had some really sick game of thrones stout a couple years back. Probably ditched the name reference but the recipe might still be in their lineup under a new name?

Pfriem has some gooders too. La Bretta pale has just enough Brett funk but not too much that it’s a real slow drinker.

If you’re ever in Canada hit me up for a list though (most of our brews don’t make it south of the border but I think some BC breweries are among the best in North America).

Anything by Four Winds gets what excited. From their lager to farmhouse ales to IPAs. My neighbourhood has like 10 breweries in walking distance though and another 20 in biking distance so I usually change it up and am always stoked on something different. Hard to pin anything down.

Yeah, very american. Depending on how the covid thing shakes out the next few months I might make it into BC and have to check some things out.

Yeah man it’s possible the way things are going! Definitely hit me up if you want recommendations. Been to a lot of breweries across the province for “thesis research” and honestly would recommend most of them!
 
Zonkers stout from snake river in Jackson is lretty dank.

Good nature brown ale from some small joint in ipstate ny is one of my forever favs.

Bells two hearted is ine of my favorite distributed beers. Ive been to the brewery a fee tomes and festivals theyve sponsored. But a few years ago they got a distribution deal and you can get that shit everywhere now.

Idk I've been off the beer the last season or two though. I went pretty hesvy when I moved to CO. Had cash to burn and was raging various distributors in different areas. Roommate put a bottle of whiskey on the cabinets and I threw a beer bottle up. Kept it going for no reason. There were 73 beers that i liked from the last month and a half. Sick claim but really it was kinda cool. Ive never kept beer bittles otherwise but it was cool being able to see the various beers and remember them.

Left hand milk stout is always a decent one. I also think it's fun to shoot the bottle tops. Theyll go 200 feet ish. Or multiple walls in your apartment. My roommates were scared when zi brought those home. Try them sometime. You could prolly kill someone woth them honestly. Be careful.

I usually rock sierra hazy's, lagunitas, 21st ipa, etc. There everywhere here and they're all pretty good.

Got enough into beers that im passionste but I hate to nerd inti it too hard. The ultra hipster status is too much.

I'm drinking whiskey and trying to black out so ill shut the fuck up.

Two Hearted was my first beer. I determined that it must be an acquired task.
 
Honestly too many to count. Definitely explore all different styles and even if you don't like most beers in a style, keep trying because you could still find good ones. Example I hate IPAs but there's some good ones I've had. Highly recommend going to beer fests to sample a ton of beers and also get really fucked up for like $30-40. I like my stouts jet black (Guinness is watery imo).

Here's some beers or styles I can think of off the top of my head:

-Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA

-North Coast Brewing Old Stock Ale

-Less than average beer but Sweetwater Kush smells like reefer and was cool to try.

-Anything by Left Hand Brewing (Made the first stout I ever liked and got me started on craft beers. Called Java Lava and was a one time colab with a home brewer. Sadly will never see it again :/ unless one of you know the guy in CO and can get me a bottle????!)

-90% of EPIC Brewing Company's beers are amazing. They have a thing called the gauntlet where you can sample all their beers.

-Souther tier is a good brewery

-Platform Brewery has a ton of great beers and makes the best coffee beer (an ale actually) I've ever had.

-If you get out and explore, you'll find that your town probably has a lot of little breweries that are way underrated and will never end up in a big box store. I could name all the good beers and breweries I've been to but you'll never go there or be able to find them. Just get out and get trying. Buy by the bottle.

-The glass you use to drink is paramount. Do not ignore this advice as it can totally change how you experience a beer.

-Temperature is also important to experiencing the proper amount of flavor. Most beers aren't meant to be drunk as cold as your fridge will get them. Belgian beers are drunk at practically room temp. The reason you drink cheap beer at 32F is because it tastes like shit and the cold masks that.

-Coffee stouts and porters can be really good.

-Milk stouts are a good intro to stouts

-Russian imperial stouts are for men

-I usually opt for nitro if a beer has both options

-Learn how to pour different beers. All are not created equal

-Read the description on the menu and if it doesn't have one, look it up so you can understand what flavors and scents you're getting.

-Opt for flights (samples) if you wanna broaden your horizons.

-Spicy beers are dope

-Sour beers are a love or hate category but I think they're amazing

-Hefeweizens are good

-Gose is a decent style

-Belgian beers are to be revered. Expensive but totally worth it.

-Many good German beers out there.

-Many good foreign beers out there.

-If you see sediment, it's fine. It's just unfiltered which is fine. This ain't Budweiser.

-Breakfast stouts are nice (Maumee Bay Breakfast Stout is good)

-Seasonal beers are fun. I also tend to change what I drink based on the weather. No way I'm drinking a heavy stout in the summer.

-Pumpkin is love or hate but you need to explore as not all are created equal. I'd rank Southern Tier Warlock (imperial stout) and Pumpking (ale) as some of the best out there.

-Christmas: huge variation of spices and sweetness so you'll have to explore. My top is Southern Tier 2xmas Ale. Great Lakes is good. 12 dogs is good. For an extra kick of booze and flavor, throw a shot of fireball in a Christmas ale.

-Higher alcohol content beers have a longer shelf life upwards of years.

-Ceria thc beer is OK and definitely not the same as a Blue Moon.

-Foreign beers are interesting but if I gotta pick a Mexican beer, I will always choose Tacate. 100% best Mexican beer. Fight me.

-Flavored fruity or chocolate or other similar style beers are hit or miss.

-Also temperature does not skunk beer- light does (common myth). So NO need to store in the refrigerator until you drink it. Keep in cool dark place.

Also I know it's not beer, but ciders are pretty interesting too.

Tldr: I drink a lot.
 
Just remember what someone else likes you might hate, and vice versa. There's so many beers people say are "aMaZiNg" but I think are bad or just average and nothing special. Explore a bit. Learn your taste buds.

Then....

Get into scotch.
