The level of skiing in girls competitions

basically, naturally (instinct wise) guys feel the need to throw down the biggest, or be the best, generally be the alpha male. We can't help it, it's just our genetic make up. So as a result we want to do the best in whatever it is we do. Plus guys are generally far more adrenaline junkies than women, for a similar reason to above. So they throw down to the max of their ability to get that adrenaline rush. Fewer girls are into adrenaline (which ultimately is the fight or flight hormone) because historically they haven't needed to use it.
Evolution and generally girls wanting to be equal to guys will push girls harder in the sport. It will happen!
PLUS Girls who freestyle ski are SO frikkin hot! I love to see a well dressed snow bunny tearing it up and throwing down. Is v. hot...
agreed newschoolers?

^ not sure what you mean by this! But yes I am aware for the Vagina phenomena. Has anyone ever found one? Or the even more elusive clitoris? Mystery surrounds everything about it.

Well I think the numbers thing is huge. Girls are always talking about being intimidated by being the obvious minority against the guys. Take Kristi's comp thing she held like a week ago, those girls were doing things that they just wouldn't normally feel comfortable doing.
Girls are almost always more reluctant to try things that they could get hurt doing as well. Or at least it seems that way. Most of the girls I see skiing don't really put themselves all into it. They hold back, or play it as safe as they can doing whatever they are doing. It's that right hand left hand thing that someone brought up before. There are a couple girls that just have a different vibe, like they're just wired differently, and they throw down damn hard. If there were more girls that did park skiing there would be more of these girls I think, and that's when the level could rival the men's level.
Physically, the fact that women are built different than men should only really affect big mountain, or more strength-related skiing, but rails and jumps are more coordination than build. That's why so many lanky guys can still hold their own against the strong ones in the park.
Either way, I get stoked whenever I see a girl in the park trying stuff.

I think that there are a lot of factors going into this.
Firstly, I think it's rather non-constructive to make generalizations. There are girls out there who throw down just as hard as the boys. Let's face it though, it's a man's sport, so you don't always see that coverage unless it's tied to some cute little ad for Roxy or something.
Women's freestyling hasn't really been taken seriously until recently. Think of the first women's twin tips...basically a men's ski with some cute little design on it. And also, no offense, but things like the Lange girl ads don't necessarily foster a sense of athleticism and sport....it's an image.
So girls go out there buy all the gear and then get out to the actual parks and it's not at all what they expected. And let's face it, parks can be intimidating as hell. At a young age when you're a girl and are trying to figure out boys it's not necessarily the kind of environment that you want to put yourself in. It's a guy's scene, and for a young girl it's not the most accommodating. Even for women too. I've been straight up asked if I was at a park just to pick up guys. Girls have a lot to prove.
And sure there are a good number of girls at Windell's and the other camps, but on a local scale there's not always the most conducive realms to get girls out there. I think that's going to change though as more and more places have camps and workshops.
On a physical scale, yes women and men are obviously built differently. But women tend to be more flexible which is very beneficial in many regards. It would be cool to see girls developing new tricks off of that versus just what the guys are doing.
I think what women's freestyling needs is more older girls/women to help get the younger girls out there on a local level. It also wouldn't hurt for there to be less of a stigma against women's freestyling in general. If you want to see a girl throw down, then help her out.

i used to wonder about why girls sucked in comp

then i stopped watching girls comp

problem solved.

i think it really is just about girls pushing themselves... every girl i've skiied with, even if theyre a really solid skiier, just totally dont try and push themself. even if its not in park and its just skiing some pow. theyre always much more tentative... when i try something new i go balls out, whereas girls are much more cautious.

there are videos of 10 year olds doing corks and overall slaying it. if they can do it then there is no reason a woman cant. physically, women cant quite match men, so they are bound to be a little behind. that said, i do feel like it comes down to competition. the life of a pro female skier is about as ghetto as it gets, so when comp time comes around, they are probably just as worried about progession as they are about getting money for daily necessities. they have to stick to their normal tricks because 1 they have to land their runs for money and 2 they dont need to push themselves to place well. its gotta suck for the girls

if there was a jam style big air contest for girls, then i think that we would see some real progression in womens skiing. they would just throw down

I agree with the fact that there's just not enough competitors to push the womens side of freeskiing up a level but also, you have to bear in mind that women are simply not as naturally athletic as men. All pros, both men and women are at the top of their physical game, when you look at people like Dumont, they are muscular as fuck. All this will help when throwing down in the pipe/park/big air simply because of the extra strength they have in the pop/wind up to set a massive spin etc, it also helps when it comes to taking a hit, more core strength = able to take a spill better.I don't wanna sound like a total sexist, but women simply don't have the athletic strength that it takes to bring the sport up to the guys level, though it'd be cool to see some more competitors pushing the standard up.

no i'm not, i just put the k-rob in my sig so that just in case people don't see my icon or my username they'll know it's me haha

the quote is talib kweli i believe

i will remove my name now, though.

girls bodies have nothing to do with why girls arnt good! if people keep saying that and believing that how will the girls sport improve!?

Ski Chicks are hot and they have vaginas.
This goes out to every hot ski bunny.

I think that girls can be scared of things and going big...they are scared of getin wrecked....and falling in general....me, if i see it i will eventually go for it....i ski with the BIG BOYS/brogan,seanJ, nips, KThomas....they inspire me....so think girls need to step up game....they can def rip as much as men. no doubt.... Men, they can be worse tooo....im better than some guys....lol i love my fronties!!! and misty's!!!

Wow your a fucking idiot. Why in the hell would someone work that hard to get to the top of their field, and then when they accomplish it, the say "ehh im done im already at the top so ill just cruise." Someone with that mindset, like kaya and sarah likely have, wont settle for that. You think Michael Jordan stopped practicing after he became the best player in his time, no. You think Tanner stopped practicing after he won all those gold medals, no. That just wont happen.

theres this girl on my ski team that is amazing. shes nucking futs, she can cork 10 and a whole bunch of other shit. if your from alberta and you compete you probaly know who im talking about. the crazy thing is, is that shes only 13. she wins every big air comp she enters. sarah burke wasnt doing straight 10s until she was 16. she beats most of the guys in comp

Welcome to NS Jackie! Great first post.

GUYS! I think there is something to be said that needs some emphasis in Jackies post. She uses the word "inspire". Those guys she mentioned are stoked for her and are generally supportive and welcoming. so if you see girls in the park. Be helpful no matter what level they are.

in every thread about girls a post like this comes up....
the lock ness monster doesnt exist and neither does wonder girl: the ten year old freeskiing savior

i just got back from a comp in idaho (stompgames) and there was one girl skier there in slope preeetty weak but she threw down and she was hella cool soo idk if that says something..

actually no, in gymnastics the men and women are pretty much competing at the same level of difficulty and skill.

i personally like trucks..they feel floaty. adn yes u should be stoked that a girl can grab skis. frontflips are fun too. they are scary with blind landings, but most people wont straight up front, they would misty. many people i know who tryed fronts, failed....miserably. fronts are prtty hard too. so for girl who can flip in any kind of way is amazing. and 14,,, young. yes. young....but next year....she needs to progress

yeah help out the ladies!!! they want to try and progress. my way of saying things are pretty much....if u dont try, dont waste others time. like when i screw up and miss a grab, i wont stop untill i get it at least 4 time in a row. i like to progress....progressing is FUN. girls are scared....i am too but to get over the fear is to try new things. youve got to.

thnks sir i try my best!! INSPIRE is truly the best word to describe it. that learning feeling.

i havnt seen many girls at bigoulder besides katherine, kristeezy, and snowbarders. just to see girls at my mountain try to hit a rail is just great...great to actually see girls trying to learn.

I WISH there were more good girl skiiers, there is far too much sausage around and there is nothing sweeter than seeing a sexy chick in choice outerwear mash up some sweet pow or hit the park with style. Or even just to seem them flying down the piste. COME ON GIRLS LET'S SEE YOU STEP UP!!!

^ yeah shes right on. like all you guys have your 'groups' to ski with. your all there for support and you push the HELL out of eachother. all my girl friends like to shop or play other sports. i have no one to push me. there are maybe* like 2 other girls in my area (where there are 3 mountains 15- 45 min drive from town) WHO ACTUALLY SKI. I DEFF know if there were other girls to ski with and that challenged me i would be doing more stuff.. and i think thats the case for MOST girls who ski

yeah seriously.. most of the guys at my ski area are complete JERKS besides the few i ski with. if would help alot if they were more friendly and not so fucking intimidating

True that. I don't understand the hate that you experience but I believe you when you say it's intimidating!
I don't hate, I just spread love.
Spread love people!

why would guys be such jerks. all guys that hang wid me, they help me progress...espesially nipples....all the way THANKS DUDe....

having someone to push you is definitely clutch, so all you girls out there next time you're shredding find a guy you're homies with and try whatever tricks he's trying. The way I see it is if someone else can do it it's obviously physically possible, it's just a matter of me getting the balls to try it. hmmmm, maybe that's where girls have a problem?

FUNNY....Yeah Nipples, Brogan, Pat Kerz..., Hollywood J., they all have these tricks,, i see em, i try em...progress.. def..i rid ewith them a lot. especailly this year,,, i progressed more than i would have any time....for sure

i dont have the vid of her cork 10s, she learned them just before nationals and she was warming up with cork 7s on comp day and the speed was variable, she cased on a cork 7, bit through her lip, broke her nose and got a concussion so shes done for the rest of the season.
