The Laramie Project

So yesterday our entire school was required to go see The Laramie Project put on by our drama class. If you don't know what The Laramie Project is, it's the story of Matthew Sheperd. A gay guy who was killed by 2 other dudes and they supposedly did it by beating his face in with the butt of a pistol AND because he was gay.

I can understand making it optional, but is it really the job of a public school to force it's beliefs regarding social issues down it's students throats?

For the record I'm not some weird homophobic uber-right wing asscrack. I just think it's kind of messed up the school felt this was necessary.

they aren't forcing viewpoints down anyone's throats. its called teaching respect for other people, even if they don't align with your personal belief system.

My school was forced to see rachel's challenge about the girl killed in the columbine shooting, i bet you wouldn't classify that as shoving views down peoples throat, so how is this different?

They were all strung out on meth. It was widely known within Laramie at the time that McKinney was bisexual. It seems a bit silly to beat the shit out of a gay man..when you like men yourself. It ends up when you strip away all the bias as two drug addicts beating the hell out of another drug addict for money. His sexuality in the end was found to be irrelevant to the crime.
