The iPhone Killer

So I recently purchased the Samsung Instinct from the Sprint Network and have been able to thoroughly look through it and view online comparisons to the Instinct and the iPhone. The features on the Instinct may not be offered on the iPhone such as tv, microSD card for larger external storage, a favorites screen, gps (before the iPhone 3G came out) and others. After having my 2 year contract end I was able to snag this phone for $129.99 which also is the price if you sign for a 2 year agreement plan, compared to the $450 you would have to pay if your in the middle of your contract. It is not as tough as the iPhone with a plastic screen and what seems to be a rubberized backing but sure is a bang for your buck. This phone is being compared to the current iPhone which has been out for quite a while and has had numerous updates, so if we were to compare the iPhone upon its release to the Instinct for the amount of time the Instinct has been on the market for then it would be a fair fight. Sprint also requires a plan that costs less than the iPhones and has 2 options, the basic which limits you to only some of the features or the unlimited plan which allows you to browse the web, watch tv, use all messaging, listen to the radio, gps, etc.

True. But if RIM does their job and brings the things that are better about a blackberry than a iphone to the thunder, along with adding the aspects of the iphone that are superior, it is going to be a really sick phone. But I guess we will see.

Neither really matter to me because I don't like the touchscreen keyboard, though.

that's true. it should give the iphone a run for it's money. i mean like you said if they get rid of the cons the iphone has and bring in it's pros plus the blackberry "touch" if you will it should be sick.

it's supposed to come out in quarter 3 so probably the end of this year actually. i'm contemplating waiting for the thunder or getting the vx6900. i just don't know haha.

i tried the touchscreen a good bit and i have grown to like it, i think it'll be just as fast as a regular phone after a week or so of me having it.

has a shit load of tech that isnt in any other touch phone yet.

either going to blow everything else out of the water or bomb.

and the touchscreen keyboard on the thunder has so far been called unusable and "a joke". No other phone can match the iPhone's user experience. With the introduction of the App Store and the ease of development for the iPhone, in a few months nobody will be able to touch it.

How long has samsung been making phones? 12 years? How long has Apple? 1?

Apple's strengths lie in the power of the software. Mobile Safari is almost the perfect mobile browser. Syncing with iTunes is millions of times easier than syncing a Windows Mobile phone with any computer.

IMO most the apple ipods/iphones are all peices of shit. but they are like crack. Mine always break and they never fix them for me, and i say to myself "damn im never buying from this company again", then the next week i have a brand new ipod touch in my hand. It was said before in this thread, they are just status symbols. They are "cool" gadgets athat everyone wants to buy to show off.

dudes its an iphone,,,, everything that comes next is just a knock off.

same with an ipod.

same with a computer that doesnt crash, or slow down because you enjoy porn. actually im sure macs are the only computer with that status.

i've never crashed a computer and my computers speed up over time, not slow down. maybe you just suck at computers...

there wont be an iphone killer.....apple has built up such a reputation that whatever they make will be the best. most people arent smart enough buyers to research before they buy so they just assume that apple's products are the best and they will just buy it.

RIM is working on an advanced touchscreen keyboard that will provide tactile feedback to the user. The graphic will depress upon input and the screen with provide slight vibration or a push back, mimicking what a physical QWERTY keyboard provides. RIM is also using the exact same tech when it comes to the multi-touch itself. The Thunder is realistically the only thing that can be considered an iPhone killer, but we'll never know until it comes out. While Apple makes amazing software on a consumer level, RIM makes amazing software for business users. They just have to bridge that gap over, hopefully better than what Apple has done with Enterprise/Exchange ActivSync (which has tons of bugs and is a bit of a mess).

BTW, the new Blackberry Bold (July 25th in Canada) is rumored to have a "Blackberry Specific" version of iTunes that will sync pefectly with Mac or PC. Combined that with an expandable micro-SD slot (8 GB, possibly up to 16 GB) and you'll have a pretty decent media player. No it won't be close to the iPhone, but for someone like me who really needs their phone for business, it might do the trick. Even if Apple fixes the exchange isses (which they likely will, 2.0.1 software is currently in testing by AT&T and Apple employees) the touchscreen keyboard still doesn't match the QWERTY keyboard on the Bold.

or you could just build your own computer and throw a linux os on there and you're set!

no apple.. no windows.. now THERE is a concept!

hahaha very true. i'm pretty sure gates and jobbs use linux os don't they?

i am stuck between getting the vx6900 in like august when i can get a new phone, or waiting for the thunder to come out. the vx6900 is fucking sick, but if the thunder comes out and gets insane ratings i'll be a little mad i didn't wait. cock!!!

uh, the Blackberry Thunder isn't out yet, in fact, it's months away. Not even the Bold has come out yet, not that it is really supposed to be an iPhone killer, it's still more of a business machine. I love the iPhone as much as most, but when it comes to business and exchange/enterprise integration, iPhone FAILED. So many bugs and glitches, no horizontal keyboard, invitation request not always supported, GAL issues, no support for public folders, and one one calendar supported without the support of MobileMe.

exactly, IBMs are the shit. but people like the familiar. I gave up the anti-iphone argument, fuck it let people use what they want and glamorize what they will, I'll live my own life sans-iphone

uh, the keyboard doesn't change when you flip the iPhone sideways. Not on any of the half dozen I tried. Show my a picture of one doing it in both SMS and email and I'lll take it back.

And I know there is a calendar app on the iPhone, but you can't have your work calendar synced with the iPhone and your home calendar synced without MobileMe, you have to choose one or the other. So PWNED yourself. Retard.

from cnet's review:

"What's missing?

We've mentioned already that Apple has stubbornly left out multimedia messaging, stereo Bluetooth, and video recording. But we also wish we'd gotten a landscape keyboard for messaging, cut and paste..."

Oh yeah, and no cut and paste. Anybody who uses a blackberry for business will be stumped by this one, and more, Apple doesn't even care.

people are just fascinated by the touch screen and all the features of the i phone, so for a while i think it will remain on top

i think he means if you download the app or whatever it is called accelerator, it makes it so the keyboard can go landscape as well when you flip the iphone.

either way, yeah the iphone is sweet and i'd definitely take one. but i think there are better phones out there or in the works.

are you sure iCal doesn't sync with the iphone automatically... seems sorta stupid that apple would leave that one out.. but hey I could see it.

First of all, its called an accelerometer. It is part of the iPhone (and iPod touch). It is what controls the tilting features on pictures, coverflow, google maps, safari (and the keyboard in safari), BUT DOES NOT TILT THE KEYBOARD IN EMAIL OR SMS. That people, is what is the big deal. I could care less to type a URL with a vertical or horizontal keyboard, because it doesn't take very long. But, if I'm writing a long email to a client, I'd like to have a bigger keyboard so I'm not screwing up every two seconds. Yes I know the software that corrects it is pretty good, but that's just it, its pretty good, it doesn't hold a candle to a blackberry keyboard.

Secondly, yes of course the iPhone syncs with iCal. And yes, it does sync with Office Outlook (but screws up meeting invitations). But you can't have both at the same time without MobileMe. Let me say that again, unless you have MobileMe, the iPhone only supports one Calendar. This is a problem for a lot of people who want to use the iPhone for business because they don't care about MobileMe, but when they sync their iPhone at home, iCal erases Outlook's calendar, thus fucking up the work appointments/meetings on BOTH the iPhone and the work PC's Outlook.

So for the last time, iPhone + business support = FAIL. Now, mind you, all of these issues (plus cut/copy/paste) should be able to be fixed with a software update, so hopefully Apple fixes these problems soon.

Apple had the original iphone built and working three years before it was launched on the market.

I have owned a lot of smart phones, and a blackberry, and all i have to say is the the treo 700wx is by far the best smartphone i have used. I own it now, and oculdn't be happier. It's been around for YEARS yet not too many phones keep up with the memory in the 700wx. Not to mention you can get one off ebay for 100-150. If your thinking of a smartphone ,seriously look into it. And in my opinion, the lakc of a physical keyboard was enough reason for me to stay clear of the iphone.

Anyone hating on the iPhone because of the keyboard needs to try it for a week before you knock it. It becomes incredibly easy to use. Not to mention you don't even need to be accurate with it, since the correction feature works very well. I'm actually typing this from my iPhone right now. If you want some kind of feedback when you type, turn on the clicking sound.

Only thing I don't like about this phone is lack of copy and paste.

double true!!!

the iphone is such a status symbol. it tells everyone, yeah i know that they will come out with sutin better in a year but im gunna spend the insane amount of money to buy it anyway. that wasnt sarcastic. i had it and i loved it

copy and paste is actually INCREDIBLY complicated to implement. What are you copying? Images, text, files, etc. Where are you copying it to? Is that allowed to be pasted into this application? Is the clipboard global? Is it local to this program? How do you implement it? It fucking sucks balls on Windows Mobile (I've never done it on a blackberry) but I don't imagine it being as easy as on a regular computer.

The iPhone keyboard is amazing. I've been using it on my Touch for the past couple of days and the word correction is incredible. I'd say its the qwerty version of T9. Its simple and ingenious.
