The importance of amateur content

This is something I’ve thought about for a while now. I thoroughly enjoy watching lower levels of well executed skiing, whether that be park clips or street edits. Not only do I just personally prefer style over tech anyways, but I think I like watching these style of videos a lot more simply because they’re more “relatable” or “feasible”. Like you can watch all the clips and be like ayo I can do that or ayo I could do that. Nothing to take away from the bigger guys tossing insane shit, but I think these lesser known parts, edits, etc hold a very important weight in the ski world.

Like I love love love watching street edits from smaller name guys that I’ve either never heard of or barely heard of. Nothing crazy. Just some chill 2 1/2 mins of someone hitting handrails and neat spots will do it for me. Like I said these small name parts/ edits being put out, especially street skiing, hold just as much importance in the community as say full length films being put out by big name crews like Child Labor or Strictly.

Lowkey I feel like there’s lots of kids out there mad inspired (as I am) by some of the stuff on the arsenic YouTube channel for example. Not the biggest or craziest street skiing or park edits. But they all carry a good vibe and good skiing. Like I bet kids watch these edits and see skiers just straight sliding hand rails and having a good time with their homies and get stoked as hell cause they’re like yo I can do that what’s holding me back from doing the same and getting some shots and making an edit with my homies?

TLDR the amateur and beginner side of content creation is just as important in skiing, if not more important than professional content production. Quite frankly I love it.

id rather watch some shitty vx edit made by 16 year olds than a well filmed pro part. amateur content >>>>>>>

absolutely, amateur content is what shapes the future of skiing, IMO more than professional projects. it’s undeniably the best.

Agreed. AM content, specifically local to me, is my favorite to watch. Relatable and motivates me more to progress and find new features/spots.

Also, I’m dropping and AM movie of my friends and I around Oregon here soon…stay tuned!

Hyped to watch it !!

wasn't this the entire concept behind new wave skiing? at least that's what I thought it was lmao

I totally agree though, one of my top five favorite ski movies is video entertainment because it feels so "feasible" but well done at the same time, it's like yeah me and some friends could go make this

Love watching amerateur skiing, even if the edits are only like 2 tricks, if they’re done well I vibe. Love the shittier skiing edits all round, it’s the reason I’m here tbh. To consume and produce edits of mediocre skiing.

Skiings finally transcending to the level of skating where we can have an established AM scene, I’m hyped seeing all these new crews come up, I think it’ll bring a whole new angle to the sport- it’s no longer just super stars out west, now there’s a whole level of dudes just fucking up your home hill/city and putting out content. It’s great.

the fact that Sucka just dropped makes this thread especially relevant

what makes this even more relevant is the fact that good company just dropped the same edit they have since 2013 and im still gonna rewatch sucka instead of it

Couldn't agree more, I helped film a segment that will be on arsenic in a few weeks and am gonna make my own part this winter.

Gonna keep an eye out for both of those

Haha, West like watching noobs!

but forreal, love watching smaller group videos or season edits from random people. Feel lile it is more authentic. They made their video because they want to, it’s more of a stoke thing. Shred goes down anywhere and it’s cool that people document it.

(haha lil boye likes watching noobs)

You could always just watch both cuz they're both good

10, when am I filming your part?

Next couple years. I plan on making a street part when I move up to state college next fall. Probably a two year project to get enough clips. Hell I might put something little out this winter if we get enough snow and I can hit enough spots here in town.

this years good company project is actually pretty good IMO, compared to previous years it's a much better length (shorter) and Little John and Thom Wallinsch still got it. Soundtrack was a little better still too soft for me though

There's a word for that.

Corporation.

The bigger they are the more likely they are to copy everything else, nothing original ever.

Creativity is the contribution of the amateurs. Very likely to be stolen. Sadly.

Not tryna hate but you could also make the argument that most everyone has made their own version of zootspace, nothin wrong with it but saying everyone makes the same movie every year kinda applies to alot of people not just pros.

uhhhhhhhh no

pow movies are often the same tricks done OVER AND OVER, chances are the same tricks were done in the last movie. Yeah they're cool and gnarly but I get bored watching dudes doing layout backflips and cliffs. Street videos are an entirely different game, unless its dudes hitting the same spots from other movies.

I wasn't really talking about the skiing, more of the editing and filming. What makes a good edit in my opinion is a combination of good editing and skiing. Personally I am kinda getting tired of the editing style of grainy montages. Im not hating on it at all but it has clearly become the mainstream now for underground urban edits. Like 80% of the urban edits now all have the same slightly over exposed shots and editing style. I actually do think it is a dope style of filming and editing but literally everyone is doing it now. Pow edits can be vary hard to remember, but I think that it creates an opportunity to work even harder to make the film stand out in other ways besides the skiing.
=WileyMiller

this is a pow edit by Wiley miller that definitely stands out from the rest purely because of the filming and editing.

Bermuda was also a great example.

most grainy edits don’t have any special editing for a reason? if you have good clips and filming there’s no reason to ruin them with special effects and all that bullshit. there’s a reason you don’t see a speck of magic bullshit on a cold ass street vid.

To each his own I guess, in my opinion I think its dope when the editior puts there mark on the edit as long as it does not take away from the skiing.

not nessicarly saying throw in a bunch of special effects just saying that most editors could take a bit more creative liberties with the process with the filming and editing

I agree, a small producer is not necessarily great. But a smaller group is more likely to experiment with things that sometimes don't work than a large group which almost always just follows the leader. Once something reaches gigantic size there's no one home, no thinking happening, no striving except to be above or before Jones in Accounting.

When ur not triple corking you have to get creative and I love me some creativity. Sounds shitty to say but people going big just doesn't hold my attention for a full edit anymore. I gotta feel something in the heart or balls
