1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?

I will be buying the camera this summer, i would not like to spend much more over 700 dollars. there is a possibility i could get more to invest in the future but it is remain to be seen if i will.

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?

I have only ever used a gopro but i have helped friends use dvx-100b's before, they did all the adjusting the levels and all that and i just filmed it though.
3) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)

I think i have a tripod laying around somewhere.
4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)

this camera will be used for filming skiing 90% of the time, except if i want to bring it out to film some goofing around or something like that. probably wont get into making movies or short films.

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

yes, i want to be able to have anyone i hand this too to be able to get the shot.
6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)

I will have a go pro for follow cams so this camera will be a stationary camera, but not always on a tripod.

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

i have a mac book pro that was bought in the spring on 2010
7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

I have edited on imovie, but i hate it so i will be using final cut pro x from the mac store unless someone can point me in a better direction.

SO WITH THAT BEING SAID, I was thinking something like this

700 is about enough for a t2i and the kit lense, mine was 715 shipped refurb. so he'd need more for the accessories/nice lenses

If you plan on handing to your friends and not doing to much manual adjustments, the Hv20, hv30 and hv40 I believe are all in your price range and will give you a little bit extra to buy a descent tripod or other accesories.

May i recommend not using Final Cut Pro X, its really just a mash of Final Cut Pro 7 and Imovie, so either get Final Cut Pro 7 or go with an Adobe or Sony Vegas

Alot of people are going with DSLR's, to get a feel go to vimeo, google and search "canon t2i and ski" or something or watch edits on NS where people use DSLR's, canon is especially popular for people doing video dslr. And you can get the Canon T2i for around the price you're looking for, I went for the t3i because it has the flip screen and more sound capabilities but the quality is essential the same

Make sure you do your research tho and don't simply settle for a cheaper camera, it will end up costing you e.i. you buy a camera for 500 and realize it doesn't give you the capabilities you were looking for, it won't be long before you're back looking for cameras.

if he has 700 dollars, he can almost afford a t2i with a kit lens refurbished after tax and shipping and what not. please stop suggesting dslrs, at that price, its not happening.
