The greatest ski bum, go!

you don't know him , nobody does.

he is just out there , skiing everyday , living in his car like a true ski bum.

he doesn't brag about how much days he gets or anything.

he is just out there enjoying life.

I always liked the guy that was on the powder cover for the 50th anniversary. This clip from SI is the only thing I know about him but that picture is too badass for me to disagree

Yep. Except for the living in a car thing. I don't know any legit ski bums that really live in a car. We all live in houses, 'cause, you know... living in a car sucks and rent isn't that hard to come by. The misconception of ski bums being complete dirt bags has always bugged me. I possibly live a more 'luxurious' life than some of my city friends who work year round, yet I take 6 months off every winter to ski everyday.

As for who I actually know:

My friend Brace was the most efficient ski bum I knew before he did something silly like getting a job in the city. Worked 4 months a year, only spent money when it was needed, ski toured like a machine and travelled around to some really amazing places to ski some of the finest terrain in Canada. Now he's the most efficient weekend warrior I know. He could put anyone to shame on the uphill (except for certain Rogers Pass staples) and he only skis two days a week.

hahahaha yes! Slaaaaaaaag Master! Definitely the most true ski bum I know- dude cracks me up, and he's always stoked about something.

Im guna have to go with the birri on this one, hes in oregon right now but is usually in colorado. He was an inspiration to me that you never have to stop having fun, and i think that is whats most important. he is not a classic ski bum being that he is a park skier, but its what he loves, and hes been pursuing it for as long as ive been alive honestly.

here is his superunknown from this year http://vimeo.com/65677931

definitely one of the people i look up to in skiing

Birrion Sondahl aka: B, Birdman, Caveman, Steezus

Usually makes his rounds at Keystone, but also known to hang out with big foot in the PNW

Skis every damn day, and slays the park from habit.

Biggest boss ever.

Charlie Toups without a doubt.

"Since 1976, the 63-year-old has skied 120 days a season, shoveling snow and doing other odd jobs for a few bucks and skiing every day. What affirms his title as ski bum supreme is the fact that at night he retired to his car, parked close to the lifts.

But now Toups' brawny 6-foot frame is wedged in a jail cell in Georgetown, imprisoned for the past 57 days on misdemeanor federal charges of camping on public land, possessing marijuana and assaulting a Forest Service officer.

He could walk free with time served if he admitted his guilt. But Toups won't do that.

"I've lived this life for 33 years and now all the sudden I'm supposed to admit I'm guilty? I can't do that," he said from jail last week. "I don't know what changed after the Forest Service tolerated me for all these years. I thought we were just respecting each other. Let me ask you, is it snowing?"

Toups' tale is the embodiment of ski "bumdom." Since the 1970s, he has bummed at Mammoth in California, Snowbird in Utah, Oregon's Mount Hood, Aspen Highlands and all the ski areas in Summit County. His home -- for nearly a decade -- was a Volkswagen Beetle, the passenger seat torn out so he could sleep.

"He had a little tunnel down to it like a snow cave," said Halsted Morris, a longtime Loveland skier.

"He was the real deal"

After a few years at Loveland, where Toups worked in the ski area's kitchen, he moved on to Aspen Highlands, where every morning he stomped steep snow as part of the ski patrol's avalanche mitigation. A few hours bootpacking earned him a day's lift ticket. He haunted the mid-mountain cafeteria, munching food from abandoned trays. He stocked shelves at the local grocery at night.

"He was the epitome of ski bums. He was the real deal," said Mike Tierney, a veteran ski patroller at Highlands. "He was just a totally eccentric individual who was here to ski. We don't see those kinds of ski bums anymore. And that's kind of sad."

Mac Smith, the longtime director of the Highlands patrol, spent a few seasons in the 1970s camping at the base of the ski hill. He remembers Toups with fondness, as a "gentle giant."

"He was a really intelligent person," Smith said. "He just had a different drum beat, and he followed it."

Awesome guy, I saw him a bunch last spring at hood and couldn't figure out the slalom helmet and normal sized jiberish. He's just out there having a good time

Kaj Zackrission and Sverre Liliequest. Lived out of a van to ski the U.S. and made beanies. That's some pretty hesh shit.

And holy fuck, his wife in that wedding picture. HOT DAYUM. Sorry Kaj, but she's a dime.
