The Great Pole Debate

A while ago I was watching Stereoptype with some snowboarders, and they thought that Pete Mithoeffer using no poles looked good. Me and another skier argued that poles look better and they are just a part of skiing, but that got me thinking:

-Do poles have actual aesthetic value or am I just used to them?

-Do we use poles just out of tradition, or do they have a necessary functional purpose?

-If everyone stopped using poles would we get used to that and see poles as a useless accessory?

poles are good for mountian skiing

Outside of the park I find it pretty much immpossible to ski without poles. Or sitting on top of a cliff or steep line, without poles? Death.

I'm down with no poles in the park. But doing real skiing without them isn't a good idea.

I cant see skiing without poles, the poles really come in handy when your skiing down some steep slope out in the BC, or when youre pushing yourself towards the lift.

Thats like the maine reasons for me.

And yes it looks better in my opinion.

I would say they have aesthetic value.

I think we use them partly out of tradition (which is why they have an aesthetic value) and partly for function.

If everyone stopped using poles we would definitely get used to it and see them as useless or bad style.

have u notice when ever ur get to a flat spot how snowboards ask u for a pole. it would be so funny is snowdoarders started boarding with poles

I can no longer ski well without my poles anywhere in the park or the mountain. Its like i depend on them.

i think that poles aren't really needed to ski, but 99% of us on here grew up skiing with poles, using them to balance, help initiate a turn, and let's not forget, pushing us along a cattrack. skiing without poles is, at first, like riding your bike without training wheels. but it helps you realize that you don't need your poles to balance at all, that by shifting your body weight, you can achieve the same effect. and after you figure that out, when you pick up poles again, you are going to feel much more comfortable on your skis, i guarentee it.

I like pie.

A snowboarded asked me about this like a week ago, he siad he dosent understand why we all have poles.

no poles look pretty bad

poles help keep my arms in on rails. I flail all over without them.

OK, so basically the two explanations are that they are useful for mountain/backcountry skiing, and that they look better.

-If they are necessary for BC skiing, why aren't they neccesary for BC snowboarding?

-If they do have aesthetic value, what is it? Is it the balance between having sticks on your feet and sticks in your hands? Do they help from flailing your arms on rails and jumps (i think snowboarders tend to flail less, but they dont use poles)? Something else?

leave this little...debate alone till next fall. then you can all see how 'neccesary' poles are for BC...you all only believe shit cuz noone has proved you wrong...

to progress, rules must be broken.

I don't need 'em, but I prefer to use 'em. I have no problem with people NOT using them, though.

Poles are made to help you keep your balance because when you have more weigh on each side of a pendalum you have more time to fix your unbalanced ness, I think poles make life lots easier and that skiiers without poles look like they are part of Eagle Mount/

impossible is really just a lack of determination

skiing without poles can be good practice and really help you. but if your getting serious and skiing harder stuff poles are the way to go

Its ALOT harder to ski without poles. Andy up there is saying wait til next fall to say anything....but yeah maybe you can ski powder without poles but just try skiing variable crud without poles, it makes thing so much harder why do it? And people in the park getting rid of their poles is just one more step to aerialists.

^hahaha yeah you live in PA. Not quite skiing buddy. I broke my pole in half the other day at alta and just skiing with one pole through my balance way off. Try to come do some 'real' skiing out here then say that jerkoff.

hahah okay then I challenge you, andy, or pollard to come ski a day with me without poles while I have my poles and see how long they can keep up for. I give them two runs at the most.

it's true if you think that poles are useless you can't ski downhill...

in the park it's not 100% usefull

but to go down a hill you need pole if you do the 'right' technique

are long skis really neccesary? I mean andy if youre ditching the poles, maybee you should step it down to some skiboards too.

one question,

If i have no poles, what do i do with my hands?

Let me rephrase my comment, if you don't know how to ski without poles on terrain besides backcountry and more advanaced trails you don't know how to ski.

it's a league game smokey

^Then whats your point? That you can ski on terrain besides a terrain park without poles? If you get rid of advanced slopes and backcountry all you are saying is that you can ski on blue square groomers without poles....WOW! Thats exactly what a terrain park is. So what the fuck is your point kid?

Dumbass you don't understand the point I am tryin to get across here. I'm not saying anyone should be impressed by people being able to ski blue squares etc without poles. I'm saying that many people who are out there skiing might think they are skiing the right way but are not and to ski the right way you should be able to maintain balance without your poles.

it's a league game smokey

dspin, what is wrong with going the way of arialists? I don't want to look the way they do in the air, but they're fuckin sick. They have so much skill, I'd love to have the balls and skill they have.

It looks something like this:

2-190.jpg'

point 1: There are toooooo many posts on this subject...let it die, people will do what they want...and that should be fine with everybody who isnt an internet nazi asshole...

point 2: andy or pollard could out ski every single person in this thread hands down....with or without poles, for any given # of runs..(dspin you fucktard)...and they could do it on bigger skis than you could probably handle..(phrosty you d bag)...once again with or without poles...

point 3 Who gives a fuck?...hopefully no one

-THE LAB-

face it. if u drop the poles you are an aerialist. u may as well get a white one piece, and start wearing oakley m frame glasses from the 80's when u ski.

hahaha, kill_all_minorities, funniest shit i have ever seen
