The Great Gatsby

flapper chicks are insanely hot, but i'd rather pay to watch a new hope

for the three hundred and first time than see another hollywood jizz

load sloppily strewn together just to make money off of someone else'

idea

refusing to watch the trailer so that i have as much of a clear mind as possible when i go to see it. it's one of my favourite books ever but i have a feeling this is going to murder it horribly

that is all you need to know really. The movie did a poor job of showing multiple important symbols, had poor acting, multiple cheesy parts, and was clearly given a hollywood makeover. To be honest I am a rather picky movie critic if I have read the book before seeing the movie; however, this movie was pretty goddamn awful. But who am I to keep you from watching it? Go ahead, spend that 12 dollars to get in, I bet you won't.

I'm not a big movie critic, so I thought the movie was good. I would have been more pleased if I didn't hear JayZ and Beyonce on the soundtrack. Toby McGuire wasn't that annoying to me either, which is unusual.

Wasnt impressed. The movies pretty much just an excuse to go see famous people go get dressed up in fancy costumes

really intrigued by this.

would i be better of watching the movie first and then reading the book or just going for the book?

i was really high when i saw it opening night and i thought it was good. the effects werent over the top for me and i thought it was different. yea there was some cheesy parts but idk i enjoyed it.

The book was complete shit and Daisy in the movie trailer looks so fucking ugly. The movie will DEFINATELY not be worth it

I remember enjoying the book much more than any other high school required reading (other than the count of Monte Cristo). I'm excited to see the movie, but it probably won't live up to my expectations.

The soundtrack on the other hand is incredible, I don't understand why everyone is hating on it. Sure it isn't accurate to the time period, but the lyrics of the songs relate to the major themes of the film and feature some of the best artists out there right now. It modernizes the film somewhat and helps the audience identify more with the characters and plot. All drama films don't need an epic orchestral score to be constantly playing in the background lulling us off to sleep. Take Django Unchained for instance, it tells an incredible story, is very entertaining, and has a unique soundtrack that certainly wasn't relevant to the time period.

Anyways if you havent heard the soundtrack yet, its definitely worth a listen. Here is the 8tracks link:

plenty of good shit on there

I get to take a class field trip to the movie theaters and go see this. Actually looks a lot better than I expected it to be.

I'm assuming you read an abbreviated edition of the count of monte cristo in high school? It's like 1500 pages of painfully slow story development.

It doesn't need to be modernized, that is just what (im assuming) Baz Luhrmann is trying to do. He is taking creative liberties with the original story which is what everyone seems to disagree with, even though it happens in film all the time. When he first sat down to figure out how he wanted to direct the movie, he had to make a choice. He could focus on making a classic and accurate retelling (which has already been done twice, 1974 and 1949), or he could offer his own interpretation of the book as it applies to the society we live in today. It could be a great film either way, but from what it looks like he chose the second option.

Film is meant to be a social commentary that makes you think about the world we live in. Most people are close-minded and don't like to think, so they leave the theater bitching about how bad movies are when they don'tt stick to the original story, or fail to live up to any of their other preset expectations. Maybe Luhrmann is trying to use the film to criticize the American upperclass for being motivated by greed and power, or perhaps he has some other political agenda. Then again, I'm not too familiar with Luhrmann's work and I havent seen the film yet. For all I know, it could be more hollywood trash with a soundtrack by popular artists to get a bunch of media coverage and make more money.

And to the other dude, yes we read the abridged version in high school haha. I read the unabridged version last summer though and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was really slow at times and took me forever to get through it, but i liked the characters and enjoyed how intricate the Count's revenge plot was.]]

yeah i agree with what you're saying, what i meant was why did Luhrmann choose that interpretation. i hate to be cynical but i have a feeling it is the latter, but again i won't know til i see it. at least in Django the soundtrack was used in an ironic fashion, i don't see it being quite the same here.

anyway, enough of my cynicism. i'm going to stop slating it until i actually go and see it and form an actual opinion on it

I definitely got the sense it was the latter reason. The soundtrack seems specifically designed to get 16-year old girls cream, and judging by tumblr it's working. If it's a social commentary they aren't picking up on it that's for sure

Only Luhrmann can answer that question haha. I wouldn't have a problem with it, as long as it was well done. And I agree, unfortunately it probably won't live up to MY expectations and will probably be more hollywood trash :/' o well guess I'll have to wait and see.

and Paige, 16 year old girls must have good taste in music these days then!

Either that, or mine is going to shit haha

No. When I heard that song in the movie, I was like "this is the millionth time i've heard this song in a movie or anything, and it's NEVER THE ORIGINAL!!!" U2's OG version is the best :'(

I like White's spiral into bitter anger better than U2's mellow melancholia, personally. It actually stands alone as a song.

Just saw it last night... every man needs to take notes from DiCaprio on how to look at a woman when you're with her.

Pretty much.....As soon as someone tells me Catcher in the Rhye (which I did like), Gatsby, Catch 22, Fahrenheit 451, or like the fucking Bell Jar or some dumb shit is their favorite book, I automatically assume that they haven't ever read a book that they didn't have to.

Haha yeah. i admit catcher is also one of my favourites but i read it by choice, and i read a lot of other stuff way beyond stuff we ever did in class

Exactly how i feel and i saw it on opening day. Django used that modern soundtrack right. Gatsby just used a lot of jayz and it got annoying as fuck. And the music at gatsby's party was shitty dance music that seemed cheesy. Not fitting or a modern interpretation. Also, leo d was a mediocre gatsby at best. It was cheesy in multiple parts too. Honestly i have no desire to ever see that movie again. Such a pile of crap

just watched the Robert redford version, really enjoyed it. would definitely recommend it. its not perfect though, pretty cheesy in parts but whatever. gonna go see the new one soon

"It's like throwing a Lolita[/i]-themed children's birthday party."

So far off the mark it hurts. Just...not even close to a good or accurate analogy.

No, it isn't. No one throws a Gatsby party thinking "yeah! those people were so dumb, and rich, and self-involved, and vain! let's try and be like them!" they do it thinking "Gatsby threw sick parties, let's try throw a sick party"

All you nimbies saying the soundtrack is shitty and irrelevant, it's that way because the "modern music" of now is like the jazz of back then, "edgy". It's what they'd be listening to (evidently) if that music was around back then.

Anyone get what I mean? I see where they're coming from.

Maybe I'm putting too much faith in people, but I feel like the irony isn't lost on kids who throw gatsby parties

I happen to disagree, but I think our opinions intersect in that we concur in seeing it as comparable if they aren't aware of the irony.

Well i don't listen to Jay-z everywhere that i go. And okay, but then why aren't they rolling up to the parties in aventadors and maseratis?

lol how in the hell does this thread have anything to do with companies not wanting to hire english majors?
