The Future of Skiing

I'm sure this thread has been started a million times but a quick search didn't find one.. So what do you reckon is gonna be the next big thing.. What direction is skiing headed? For what its worth my predictions...

1. Urban Skiing - You've all seen Think Tank - More tricks down stairsets rather than just hitting rails, more imaginative use of the urban environment. (I wish i lived in a city with snow). 50-50s on handrails..

2. More Division/Hating - We've seen it in skateboarding, everyone pretty much hates on anything that isn't their thing. Urban Skiiers will hate on Park Skiiers possibly, everyone will hate on the big comps Xgames etc.. (I hope this doesn't come true)

3. More 'Believe' Style skiing - More mid-mountain pow jibbing! My favourite..

at snowbird last weekend i saw a guy on a mono-tele ski. talk about progression! seriously though, i can't imagine how hard that would be to ride.

i hate to be a bitch and shut down your ideas but i dont think any of those three are going to be the future of skiing, first off think thank's urban jibbing is super sick, but part of the reason they are able to jib so much more little urban stuff is because they're on a snowboard, half the stuff they make and hit wouldnt work or look half as good on skis..
hating does happen in the world of freesking but i dont know why youd think that would be the future of our sport, if hating is the direction you actually think is going ot lead into our future that means our sport's digressing, and besides urban skiers wouldnt hate on park skiers.. its the same thing, urban skiing comes from park skiing, and i ddont think ive ever heard of anyone who just skis urban
finally pow skiing and jibbing like in belive has been done alot its nothing so new that its going to lead into the future of skiing
ive heard this before and let me say it again, let freesking go in its own direction don't try to force it

thats fair enough its your opinion.. on the hating point (and i hope your right by the way) i think you just need to look at skateboarders.. i mean a lot of (in my opinion most) street (urban) skaters hate on park skating... and i think division will increase within freeskiing probably.. and by saying that the reason they can hit the stuff in think tank that they are riding snowboards are you not saying snowboarding has more potential than skiing.. i'm not trying to decide the future of skiing just suggesting what i think might happen

Again with no poles stuff... it looks retarded... Im sorry if thats your thing, but its true. And i hope to god that is not the future of our sport because i will never conform to that trend. And if that ever makes me an outsider at the ski hill then god have mercy on our souls.

More tricks of natural features in big mountain lines. Skiing switch on huge big mountain lines(like tech lines that are super burly, not like the stuff in idea), switch tricks on double stagers. It will go this way...eventually.

I think the concept on inner-hate in the freeskiing community is absolutely retarded. All of it stems from the same stuff. I don't understand how someone would hate on someone for skiing park or urban or whatever. It's all fucking skiing.

looking at think thank's videos alot of the stuff seems like it would flow way better on a snowboard, i do believe that skiers could pull this kind of imaginative urban jibbing off, but not very much of it has been done so far, with that being said i guess more urban jibbing could potentially be a posssible direction for the future of freeskiing

i dont know, i didnt see him on the hill, i saw him on the deck when i was getting on the tram. he actually noticed that he broke it when we were down there, so i doubt he will be back on it there anytime soon. it was like seeing the loch ness monster, i only spotted it briefly, i couldnt comprehend the physics of it, and then it was gone. and no one believes me when i tell them.

"More division". Yeah, I see it more like more specialisation. Look at any snowboard movie and most segments are pretty much all urban, all park, all BC kickers or all lines. It's happened to an extent already but I think it'll happen more. Not saying it's a good think but I see it happening. Even guys like Pep, Pollard and Tanner who slay the park, their segments have been more BC and less well rounded.

I've been skating a long time and I've never seen much hate between the different sects. Most everyone I know skates the park when they've got some time to kill alone and goes to hit up street when they've got a group. It's just a matter of what's convenient. As for vert... I dunno, I've been a street/park skater the whole way, but damn I wish I could do more than drop in on a halfpipe.

Don't take stuff so seriously dude. Do tou really think that you won't be able to buy a pair of poles by the year 2020? c'mon.

i have a feeling all the park rat freeskiers and the pow shredding freeskiers will seperate and hate on each other

ummm im not sure one person on this site HATES powder or HATES park.they might do something more then the other one but they all do both.

ive gotta agree, i only ride like 99% park because its boring to go down a hill with 200 feet of vertical all day, when ive traveled to tahoe or colorado i barely rode the park at all

Does every thread have to become an argument over poles? #2 is already true, but between poles/ no poles instead of urban/park. Who cares if someone uses poles or not.

The future of skiing will never come. We will always be looking to the future, This lack of absolution that will never become permanent. Lets just ski and see where it goes.

I was exactly like you, but then I tried it, sooo much fun. I loved it. I will still ski with poles but 0poles helps out with balance a lot too.

no not another poles vs no poles thread, ive seen a couple threads already start on a completely different topic and then end up w/ someone bashing no poles and getting ppl into an argument

word..

here's the most important event everyone needs to be at...

Winter X-Games 12 Aspen, Colorado

Sunday, January 27, 2008

2:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. Mono Skier X Final

YES!!!

no poles all gangster shit, everyones gonna have twin tips trying to progression in park and nowhere else

more skiers will start snowboarding in their spare time, there will start to be LESS hate as everyone starts to realize they are all doing this for the same reason- they ENJOY it, guaranteed lots more people will be dropping their poles in the next season or two, there will be alot less skis on the market with a sub-100mm waist, and global warming will, for the time being, cause epic winters of shit loads of snow. oh, and snowblades are gonna make a HUGE comeback.
